A Must For All Childhoods

This book doesn't disappoint, after all, it is a Seuss tale. We love Dr. Seuss in our house and every one gets read aloud to my sons with different voices, expressions, grimaces, and hand gestures. This one is one of the more fun ones to read with exciting detail. I'm hoping these moments are just as memorable to my very young children as they are to me as I don't think any childhood can be called complete without vivid memories of such colorful wacky stories. This one wasn't in our collection until we threw my son a vintage circus themed 1st birthday party. We bought this to have the guests sign with well wishes instead of bringing gifts and cards. Then, we brought it into the home library and read it with great delight. It's definitely a must have for all families!

What a classic!

When our friends became grandparents, I immediately thought of a gift for the baby - my own (now grown) kid's very favorite: If I Ran The Circus. I read it so many times to them that I could recite long stretches by memory. This edition has great color (my original is now quite faded) and I am sure will be treasured by the newbie, as well as his parents.What a Classic!

Learn by doing

I think this book is best purchased after you buy some other books about memory training. Dominic O'Brien has a number of excellent ones out there (just to pick one of my favorites, there are plenty of others) as does Fiona McPherson. Having a background in how mnemonic techniques work, and the variety of techniques available is useful because this book doesn't really explain too much about how the stuff works, but rather jumps right in to having you learn via the "Journey method".

It's a great example of how to use some Mnemonic techniques "in action" and you will probably remember a great deal of the things you are trying to remember after the first reading of this. If you apply this method to other things, you will probably find it very effective, as I do. Ed Cooke does a great job of making something that I would never other wise learn seem very interesting and fun to memorize.

This book has a wonderful way to remember things. I have learned more about history in a week than I have in many years. The thing is it sticks to you like super glue lol. If you want specific memory techniques go with Dominic obrien, but this is an excellent choice to help you breakthrough creativity of the mind, it gives that push you need. Happy reading and enjoy.

Talk about a new world view!

I found this book extremely refreshing. Atulya's story line and voice kept me engaged, and the most novel concept was that my mind kept going back to the land. In the end, it wasn't the interplay between Ayse and her thoughts or Harpagoas and his trials that astounded me. It was that to me, the main character of this book was the earth. As speciesistic human beings we tend to write about things from our point of view and on our timeline. Atulya blew that timeline and point of view out of the water, explicating the lives of a modern day hiker and an ancient Persian General through the voice of the timeless rocks of the Lycian Way.

Enchanting Story

Ayse's Trail is an engrossing story taking place in Turkey's Teke Peninsula, on the southwest 'Turquoise Coast', which is also ancient Lycia - known for its unusual ancient people. This novel follows the inner and outer journeys of two very different people at two very different times in history, both seeking relief from their pasts, as they traverse Lycia through its forested mountains and along the sea. Difficult obstacles are encountered along the way. Will they find strength to deal with these? Will they find new and hopeful futures? Or will they have futures at all?

The story is well crafted and as a person who has lived in this part of Turkey for many years, I am amazed at Ms. Bingham's ability to put into words what this land feels like to me, through her descriptions - its unforgivingness, but at the same time its tremendous beauty and enchantedness which seems to possess some people and bring them back here time after time. In a way, the land actually becomes the third main character - it is very much alive.

Great read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the different elements to the book and the way it flowed naturally between past and present. Being very familiar with the area it was an absolute delight to discover this book. Having read countless books over the years of commuting, mostly of the travel writing or relocation nature, I can tell this author has what it takes. I will be keeping an eye out for her next book without a doubt. It will most definitely be re-read. I even made my brother-in-law buy his own copy!

Okay treatment of the subject---but not a complete reference on it....

Its okay, but chiefly devoted to schematics. A little Mcguiverish info on: home, low tech and expedient gunsmithing would have been nice. If you are interested in the subject, dont count on this book singularly to give you the information you need. Otherwise, I should say that the schematics look good and make sense.

Good Drawings, Complex Design

This book contains the best drawings I've seen in a book of this type. The problem with the book is the design does not give up any complexity in an effort to tailor towards home manufacture. In other words, it might as well be a set of nice drawings for some other, more proven design such as a Uzi. OK, maybe it is somewhat easier to make than a Uzi, but it does have a large number of parts to make and they don't look outstandingly simple individually. It is probably not something you can make without a lot of skill and some machine tools. I guess it is more a book for a well-organized resistance movement than an individual working in his own basement, so the cover's words "do-it-yourself" and "homemade" are basically going to be lies for most folks. Still, it is not a bad book to have for study. Oh, the book is all metric, by the way. Conversion per se is simple enough, but if it calls for metric tubing for the starting material and only inch tubing is available you need to have an extra helping of good judgement to make all other the changes necessary.

Ordeal

Linda Lovelace became a household name in 1972, when Deep Throat became the first pornographic movie ever to cross over into the mainstream. Due to the success of Deep Throat, she appeared in Playboy, Bachelor, and even Esquire between 1973 and 1974. Soon after, Lovelace joined in with anti-pornography feminists led by Andrea Dworkin and Catharine MacKinnon, and she testified before Attorney General Meese’s Commission on Pornography in 1986. She died in Denver on April 22, 2002, due to severe injuries in a car accident.

I miss having her speak out for us who are too scared too

I'm an ex-sex worker. I now belong to Sex Workers Anonymous. I've lived this industry and I know the crowd Linda spoke about in her books. She had the courage to write about what wasn't just her experiences - but also many of ours experiences - but we go off into hiding and fear once we leave rather then speak out like she did knowing what it could and did cost her. I watched while people who knew nothing of this industry attacked her for speaking out about this industry doing what men do - always blame the woman/victim. Speaking out about what really goes on in this world affected her health deeply from the stress and contributed to her early death I'm sure. She's not the only one who had lasting health problems to deal with after having left the sex industry though no fault of her own. In America - a man can go to jail for raping his wife - but not for raping a sex worker. What people don't realize is that many of these men, women and children are living out Linda's story - they can't get out without fear of themselves being killed or their family members. I knew a pimp once who would hold a woman's child hostage until she came back each night with "his" money. One night she got arrested and wasn't able to come home on time. The pimp cut off the left arm of this six year old girl. Anyone who thinks you can't be held in this business against your will - obviously hasn't been there and should shut up about something they know nothing about. I consider Linda a martyr for taking all the guff she took to tell our stories and to try to enlighten people about what goes on every day - but we don't have the guts to tell about our stories ourselves. Anyone who wants to know what this industry can really be like - should read her stories. If all she wanted was to keep making money and just made this up to sell books - she would have done what Xavier Hollendar or Norma Jean or Heidi Fleiss - did. Sell a hell of a lot more books feeding into the american myths about this business - without any of the flack she took for telling the truth. The woman had the courage of a lion - not only to survive what she did - and to live to tell about it - but also to tell about it in the hopes that us "unknowns" are more believed when we try to tell our stories and try to get help to get out.

New Baudrillard Translation

"Telemorphosis" is a new posthumous book by Jean Baudrillard, freshly translated into English by Drew Burk as the inaugural publication of a new American publisher of philosophical texts called Univocal Publishing. Univocal is planning a whole series of translations of difficult to find texts of European philosophy and Critical Theory, and this text is a promising start to what looks like a much needed addition to the otherwise arid American intellectual publishing landscape.

Spinning off from a meditation on the French reality TV show, "Loft Story" (the Euro-equivalent to "Big Brother"), Jean Baudrillard in this book meditates on the transformation of our society by the ubiquity of a camera eye which proliferates images, and their viral clones, endlessly and without meaning or purpose beyond their mere existence. These are images without depth and, as Baudrillard has written elsewhere, in them there is precisely Nothing to see.

Far from being a show about ordinary "reality," Baudrillard points out how Loft Story offers up a spectacle that is actually more ridiculous than reality itself. He also points out how the show soon enough degenerated into a soap opera not so very different from earlier variety shows written for television.

Everything, nowadays, is being put inside the televsion set and Baudrillard predicts that soon we will be seeing snuff films and televised bodily torture on television (indeed this seems prescient in the light of the video executions of beheaded reporters by Islamists in the mid-2000's). Television, then, in gobbling up the whole of "reality," is guilty of "telemorphosizing" it. The world is now contained inside the television, for the experiment of isolating a small group of people in a loft and pointing cameras at them is simply a metaphor for what we are doing to society on the global stage of a gigantic spectacle with camera eyes watching everyone from everywhere. The ancient myth of the ubiquitous presence of the Eye of God, watching us from all corners of the earth, has now become a technological reality.

Baudrillard also fathoms the basic ontological uncertainty that this age of the proliferation of electronic images has caused us: the images that we watch on reality shows, on the news, indeed, any images on television at all, even when presented as "real" or "true" can no longer be trusted. There is always a creeping suspicion behind each and every electronic image that it might not be real. Did that event really take place? Hence, the paranoia that now attends every media spectacle from 9/11 to the death of Michael Jackson. Did he really die, or was it somehow "staged," like the mission to Mars in the 1970s science fiction classic film "Capricorn One."

The ultimate celluloid paradigm for this telemorphosis, Baudrillard insists, can be found in "The Truman Show," in which all of reality has become telemorphosized along with the story's protagonist. The world is becoming identical with its own virtual image nowadays and it is scarcely possible any longer to discern the difference between them.

"More real than real" has become Baudrillard's signature aphorism. The meaninglessness and inherent nihilism at the core of our electronic replication of a real that no longer exists, and would no longer be much valued even if it did, haunts this pleasant little text as a kind of Western equivalent of the Hindu ontology of maya, another paranoid idea which also evinces a basic mistrust of "reality," which is suspected of concealing some darker, deeper world behind this gigantic fake one. We Westerners have been technologizing all the world's myths and spiritual ideas and now, with electronic reality, we have even created a technological equivalent of maya.

About the Author

Barbara Tabachnick is Professor Emerita of Psychology at California State University, Northridge, and co-author with Linda Fidell of Using Multivariate Statistics and Experimental Designs Using ANOVA. She has published over 70 articles and technical reports and participated in over 50 professional presentations, many invited.�� She currently presents workshops in computer applications in univariate and multivariate data analysis and consults in a variety of research areas, including professional ethics in and beyond academia, effects of such factors as age and substances on driving and performance, educational computer games, effects of noise on annoyance and sleep, and fetal alcohol syndrome.� She is the recipient of the 2012 Western Psychological Association Lifetime Achievement Award.

Good How to Do Books

I have used earlier versions of this book throughout my professional life. It is a handy quick reference for the more advanced practitioner who wants to explore techniques that they have not used before. Or, to refresh one's memory on techniques that have not been used for awhile. This book is also very useful for training junior practitioners in multivariate techniques. There is enough detail to satisfy those asking more detailed questions about techniques without overwelming those less inclined to pore over mathematical formula. Steps and tests are well laid out, with enough discussion so that the reader understands the value and importance of working through the standard routines and assumption checks. It also offers important pratical steps in how to design and run specific statistical procedures in the common statistical packages.
Given the increasingly user-friendly statistical software on the market, this book offers a quick antidote for the rising number of button pushers, by showing budding statisticians the implications of using a technique ignorantly. This is done without making the technique inscrutable to the reader.
While the new edition offers some additional information - the cost conscious buyer could easily find considerable value in older editions.

This is a very nicely written and popular text on applied multivariate analysis. It does not provide theory but teaches how to use and interpret results from software packages. It has a good set of examples.

Best of class for its clarity and usefulness

Tabachnick & Fidell have produced that rare thing, a technical tome that is helpful to junior and senior statisticians, and that is even fun, at times. I've used the 2nd edition of this text since it came out in 1989, during my student days and, now, professionally. It is the first place I turn when I need a clear review of data screening techniques, when I am debating the merits of one analytic approach over another, when I need to understand the fundamental formulas underlying a technique, and when I want to see how others have written up data from the technique I've selected. The structure of the book is particularly helpful in addressing these questions; there is a chapter on most of the common statistical techniques, and each chapter has sections describing the research questions for which the technique is appropriate, limitations of the approach, its fundamental equations, miscellaneous issues, a comparison of programs (which becomes dated too quickly, of course), and examples. All of these comments concern the 2nd edition, but I'll make the wild assumption that the authors have retained the structure and improved the content in the 3rd edition...and I'll buy it.
