An Amazon Best Book of the Month, October 2014: This is a book that I did not expect to enjoy. Having finished it—and feeling, as I do now, that A Brief History of Seven Killings is one of the best books I’ve read all year—I went back and identified the reasons why I did not expect to like it. Reason #1— The story is an oral history told in multiple voices: that’s true, but James’ enormous talent makes the multiple voices work. Reading the novel is an immersive experience—the characters are real, they are engaging, and James uses them to look at all sides of the story. Yes, the multiple points-of-view are difficult at first, but each voice quickly distinguishes itself as unique and important; the payoff is a novel of sweeping scope and emotion. Reason #2—Many of the characters speak in Jamaican patois: like many readers, I’m not a big fan of dialect on the page. Tell me what they say, not necessarily how they say it. But James pulls it off with remarkable ease. I expected the patois to start to grate once I got further into the book. It never did. The language only added to my understanding of the story and its characters. Reason #3—Violence: this is not an easy book, particularly when it comes to violence. It starts early, and there’s a lot of it (certainly more than seven killings). But it’s there for a reason. By showing the violence, the poverty, and the struggle to survive in 70s Jamaica, James illustrates how the ghetto can change a person. Over time, we see how every man and woman is changed. Reason #4 –It’s about Jamaica: I hesitate to admit that I wasn’t initially interested in a book set in Jamaica. Am I just not interested in a world so different from mine? Whatever the underlying reason, I was wrong to think that way. I could take the easy route and say that this novel is about something more than Jamaica, but that seems obvious. All I can say is: these people were real to me. And like all great novels, James’ work drew me in, entertained me, and changed me in ways I could not have anticipated. –Chris Schluep

The most challenging novel I've read this year

This was probably the most challenging novel I've read in several years. Who am I kidding? There's no probably about it. Marlon James has constructed an incredibly complex story, and it took every bit of memory available to me to keep up. He was kind enough to include a cast of characters, but I made it a point to refer to it as little as possible, opting instead to try and follow the story under my own power.

Add to the story's complexity the fact that most of the characters are from the ghettos of Kingston, and speak in a patois that takes some serious acclimation initially, and will slow your reading speed to a crawl at times. Amazingly though, after spending nearly a week with these characters, I felt like I had picked up the meanings quite well and could read those sections much quicker. Strangely, for me, this adaptation was the most rewarding aspect of this particular reading experience. In fact, as much respect as I now have for Marlon James' talent, I have to admit that I did not actually enjoy this novel, and found it made for an almost constantly uncomfortable reading experience.

The last time I felt the inability to enjoy such a well written book, I was reading In Other Rooms, Other Wonders, a Pulitzer finalist. Both books require the reader to spend most of their time in very difficult places. By difficult I mean places where innocents suffer a great deal of agony and injustice, and both books left me feeling a certain hopelessness from which I felt the reader was never released. That may well be James' intention, and the fact that he could take me to such places and make them feel so real as to make me uncomfortable is a testament to his talents.

This novel contains a great deal of incredibly graphic violence (including rape), and in fact I cannot name a more graphically violent novel that I've read in the past few years. Perhaps Philip Meyers' "The Son" comes close? There is also a lot of quite graphic sex, and since the majority of the novel's many characters are hardcore criminals, the language is very often coarse throughout the story. The number of such moments are what makes it difficult for me to recommend the book to anyone whose taste and tolerance for such things I do not know well. But the novel seems to me to have been an honest one, and as you wallow in the depths and the dregs with these gangsters, you sense the suffering from which they were born, and and begin to understand their Machiavellian existence. Again, James was able to take me to some places I've certainly never been, but I can't necessarily say I'm glad I went there.

Overall, this is a brilliantly executed novel by a man who possesses a great deal of talent, and yet it is a book that is likely to prove a challenging read to most, for the reasons I've listed and more. I can't say that I'm happy to have read it, but I can certainly appreciate the art that James has created, and I do take some personal satisfaction in having followed such an intricate story to its end. Reading difficult fiction isn't always enjoyable, but it is usually beneficial, and for that I can say I'm grateful to have read A Brief History of Seven Killings.

An epic work

"A Brief History of Seven Killings" is an epic, intense, and awe-inspiring book. The comparisons to James Joyce and "As I Lay Dying" are apt and deserved.

A caution: This novel has multiple narrators (one of whom changes names several times), lengthy stream-of-consciousness passages, and is written with a great reliance on Jamaican patois and with references to events that may be unfamiliar to many readers. In short, it is a tough read. I started it and got about 50 pages in and realized I had no idea what I had read, so I put it aside, read some lengthy reviews and pieces of literary criticism about the book, and then started over. That was time well-spent, since after that I quickly became immersed in the book and enjoyed it thoroughly.

The first half of the book, leading up to the attempted assassination of Bob Marley (referred to only as "The Singer", which gets to be a bit cloying), is stronger than the second half, dealing with the deaths of those involved in the attempt. This is not because those latter stories are uninteresting -- they are -- but because James is at his best in fully painting the world of December 1976 Jamaica. The first 300-odd pages take place over just two days, giving all the characters time to emerge. The rest of the book is a bit more rushed (and therefore a bit more confusing).

Ambitious, Well Rendered, And Difficult

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SEVEN KILLINGS is bound to be a bestseller as it has an intriguing premise inspired by fact, an interesting setting and many critical endorsements even before the book is actually released. However prospective readers should also know this is a long complicated book that has a diverse cast of characters telling the story. Thankfully there is a list of seventy-six characters mentioned by these narrators sorted by the location and time period where they appear helpfully supplied at the beginning of the book. This list even includes a brief statement of these players' roles in the novel. I admit to turning to these four pages frequently in the course of reading the novel. Some of the narration uses a great deal of slang that is occasionally difficult to figure out even using context clues. I found myself often using internet resources to decipher some of this language as well as to get more background information about Jamaica in the 1970's, 80's and early 90's. This is certainly an ambitious book and it is well rendered. However the casual reader may want to realize the investment in time and effort needed to appreciate it.

Basic, not a lot of examples

The first 141 pages of the book are good for the beginner. It goes through a lot of basic setup and functionality.

It does not link a lot of the the ideas together or give a lot of different examples.

The last 378 pages (Featured Object Class) are very similar to the V5Automation.chm file, which is disappointing, considering the price of the book. I would like examples that combine ideas and show how to chain all these functions together.

The preface touts "The theory of this book is supported in many places with sample macros...are available online at [...] for download." You go to the website, register by entering your name and email and a page pops up saying an email has been set to you with the URL needed to view this content. I have tried this several times and have never received the email.

THE PERFECT SHORT STORY

It's scandalous that any of Stanley Ellin is out of print, but "The Specialty of the House" should always be in print somewhere. As big a fan as I am of John Collier, Roald Dahl and Saki, no single story of any of them can match Ellin's (first!) story. There is not a word that could be added to improve it, nor one that could be removed without diminishing it. In the thirty five years that have passed since I first read it, I doubt that six months have passed without my rereading it, and I find new pleasures each time. And the rest of Ellin is only a notch below this story (personal favorites - "Kindly Dig Your Grave, "The Last Bottle in the World", and "The Blessington Method"). If you've never read Ellin, do yourself a favor and try to find any of his story collections.

About the Author
Naomi Okamoto was born near Tokyo, Japan in 1951 and is a Member of the Federal Association of Artists (BBK). She studied painting, calligraphy, aesthetics, history of art and literature in Tokyo and moved to Germany in 1976. Naomi has studied under famous Japanese and Chinese masters of ink painting and works in various techniques from both the West and the East. She has exhibited in Tokyo, Kyoto, Westerland/Sylt, Hamburg, Dortmund, Bonn, Cologne, Mannheim, Saarbr�cken, Stuttgart, Munich and M�nster, and she teaches numerous courses in Germany, ink painting in Germany and the USA, and also under the pseudonym of Emi Akamatsu.

There is a lot of wisdom here

I just finished the book and I can honestly say it has changed my outlook in life and my frame of reference and has already changed my habits and behaviors. Even as a PhD in economics, I learned some really important insights about economics and human behavior. Specifically, I enjoyed the author's take on the role of consumption and production in our lives. In a modern economy, we use specialization and comparative advantage as a method to organize production but also, unfortunately, as a way of organizing our own lives. However, the author's key point is that an individual's level of happiness/satisfaction is a function of more than just consumption--it is also very much based on producing things--and not just one type of output related to work (e.g., writing memos). So, how does this relate to retiring early? It turns out a lot. Rather than focusing solely on increasing one's income via greater specialization (which typically just leads to a proportional increase in one's consumption levels or even greater debt), the author suggests focusing on reducing consumption--radically. However, this is not a book about denying consumption per se, it is about redefining the role that consumption has in our lives.

This is simply one of the best books I have ever read. It is a life changer. The book has more than paid for itself. As a society, we tend to spend hundreds or thousands to make ourselves feel better (e.g., shopping sprees, "experience" vacations, expensive hobbies with lots of gadgets and gear) all the while returning back to a steady state of "getting by" after a few weeks. Instead, why not find a better steady state.

A comprehensive, fantastic book

This book is for anyone who aspires to create a different reality for themselves. If you are comfortable slaving away at your "career" for the next 40 years, saving 5 to 10 percent of your income with the hopes of one day retiring, then this book is NOT for you. If you work so you can buy things, then work to service the debt required to buy even more things, then this book is NOT for you.

However, if you think that the American Dream is alive and well, yet albeit not in the traditional sense, then you need to read this book. If you can be focused, patient and disciplined to attain a goal that is within reach of anyone who wants it, then you need to read this book. If you dare to be different, if you enjoy finding an alternative to the mundane same ol', same ol', then you need to read this book.

More specifically, this book is for anyone who is looking for the philosophy of living a different lifestyle, one that frees them from the chains of the typical corporate life.

First, let me explain what you will not learn in this book. You will not learn the next great investment strategy. You will not learn how to flip real estate, how to make millions on the Internet or how to turn a small investment in a penny stock into millions. This book is about so much more than getting rich. In fact, it is not even about getting rich, rather it is about becoming wealthy.

What you will learn is a philosophy for living detached from the economy. You will learn how to provide for yourself by being efficient and sustainable. You will learn how to change your perspective so that you can see how it is possible to live on less while living more.

Really, one of the strongest points of this book can be found in the old adage "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life". And that is what the author has done here. You will not find a step by step guide to saving money to retire extremely early. What you will find are the principles required to change your life in order to make the changes required for early retirement extreme (ERE).

If anyone is looking for "21 simple ways to save money" then just do a search in Google and be on your way. This book is not for you...yet. But when attacking a problem such as ERE, which is unconventional to the majority, then unconventional means are necessary. Therefore, the author presents the principles that one can apply themselves in order to live on less and save more.

For me, some of the most positives came with the diverse contents of the book. For instance, the author talks about systems and models and learning common systems so that one can solve their own problems. This reminds me of what Charlie Munger says for investing...that is building mental models of businesses to see how they fit into the larger picture. This didn't make much sense to me until I read this book and it made much more sense.

Another major positive is just how thorough the book is. Just the sheer amount of information covered is impressive. For example, this book covered everything from eating, exercise, housing, transportation, clothing and a myriad of other things. The author had a knack for anticipating what I might question and provided an answer before I could finish my question. For example, when talking about walking in the rain, I had questions about getting wet, which of course was addressed in the subsequent discussion.

The only section that left me wanting more was the section on investing. The author alluded to the fact that he was a stock investor...of which I am one as well. Ironically, had the author said he was a real estate investor I would probably not have the same complaint, since I have no interest in real estate!

Anyways, since the assumption is that one will live in part or in full off their investment income, I was hoping for a bit more discussion on the mechanics of this, particularly from the authors point of view. However, this would have been seen as an "endorsement" so to speak for stock investing, which the author pointed out and we are all aware, there are multiple ways to invest (real estate, commodities, etc.). That said, I am not sure exactly how the author could have satisfied my need for more information on the investing aspect so perhaps this is something that would be better addressed in another book (a sort of sequel...after ERE is attained, perhaps?)

Overall, this book is certainly the most different and most complete book I have read that I can categorize as a personal finance book. The only weak point was a lack, or rather a perceived lack of detail around investing. Of course, this is EASILY overshadowed by the thorough content elsewhere in the book. As the author states, it is simple to learn about investing, one must only be willing to put in the time.

This book will provide the reader with the framework that is necessary to do something extraordinary with their life. This book doesn't give you the answers...it teaches you how to find the answers and in my opinion is much better than just a random collection of tips. I recommend that the novice read something a little simpler before tackling this work, perhaps Your Money or Your Life. Once a small base is built, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone with the wherewithal to make a major change in their life.

As Morpheus said "You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes." Take the red pill....come down the rabbit-hole.

A must read early retirement book!

This gem of a book will be helpful for anyone trying to rid themselves of the consumer mentality. I will keep it on hand to refer to whenever I feel the "need" to buy something. The author gives many alternative solutions to everyday needs that can be had for little or no money. Although, it is most definately not the typical thrift manual that tells you what to buy and what to eat and what to do. It is more of a philosophy of living where the author shares what has worked for him and also offers a complete realm of other ideas as well a how to think about and analyze the many choices for each situation.

Similar topics are covered as in the blog [...] but they are covered much more thoroughly. The book is NOT a simple copy of the blog.

Topics discussed are philosophy of lifestyles and consumer mentality, different philosophies of working, and then onto more practical matters such as transportation, housing, food, exercise, investments. The author also touches on dealing with a spouse that isn't "on board" with the lifestyle and dealing children while trying to live thoughtfully which I found to be very accurate.

This would be an excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in decreasing consumption, retiring early, saving money, and developing wortwhile activities.
