Harvest Your Own Lumber: How to Fell, Saw, Dry and Mill Wood, by John English

In today’s artisan, hands-on, and environmentally conscience landscape, there are many reasons to mill your own lumber: a craftsman, artist, or builder can gain access to a new species and unique cuts of wood; there’s the Yankee in all of us that hates to see a healthy log simply go off to the landfill when it can offer new flooring or a piece of furniture; and, finally, there’s symmetry in building something for a grandchild from the branch that held his daddy’s tire-swing. And, let’s not forget that wood is expensive; on top of all the other great reasons, harvesting your own timber will save you a few bucks

A concise guide for the small shop or enthusiastic hobbyist, Harvest Your Own Lumber covers all of the important steps in the conversion of wood. John English takes the reader through selecting the raw material to the final drying of the harvested timber. All of the steps in between are explained in clear text accompanied with photographs and charts that make the process of milling your own lumber a guaranteed success.

The process of milling your own lumber is much more than just felling the tree and sawing it into useable boards. The first consideration is, of course, what type of tree will lend itself to producing good, useable timber. Once that decision has been made the sawyer must determine how to safely fell the tree and then how to convert the log into useable lumber. The author explains and illustrates the various choices available from what types of grain pattern to expect to the many defects to be aware of. Also included is an extensive chapter on chainsaws, safety, and felling.

One of the most important aspects of timber harvesting is knowing how to “saw to grade”. That is, how to get the best yield with the desired grain, from a specific log. Harvest Your Own Lumber provides the detail and instructions for sawing to grade as well as useful information on humidity and wood, kiln and air drying, various types of kilns and milling rough boards to get them flat and straight. This is a valuable handbook for any woodworker, builder, carpenter, or craftsman that relies on good quality wood.

a nice overview of the subject title
By Joe Lee
This book is a nice overview of the subject title. Not very in-depth but then it's not intended to be. There is some very useful information on the sawmill and lumber industry that should be very useful to someone considering purchasing a portable sawmill or hiring one. If you are looking for chainsaw and felling techniques keep looking as this book gives about as much information on that as is included in your saw's owners manual.

Great book! I have learned so much, not just about cutting lumber, but also about the types of wood there are. Great read for anyone looking to build a house.

Great primer
By David Fischer
Loved it. Some of the info was unnecessary for me as I work in the tree care industry, and so, already know how to use a chainsaw. But even that info is worth reading again, and especially if one is unfamiliar with that aspect of things.

Lying About Hitler: History, Holocaust Holocaust And The David Irving Trial, by Richard J. Evans

In ruling against the controversial historian David Irving in his libel suit against the American historian Deborah Lipstadt, last April 2000, the High Court in London labeled him a falsifier of history. No objective historian, declared the judge, would manipulate the documentary record in the way that Irving did. Richard J. Evans, a Cambridge historian and the chief advisor for the defense, uses this pivotal trial as a lens for exploring a range of difficult questions about the nature of the historian's enterprise. For instance, don't all historians in the end bring a subjective agenda to bear on their reading of the evidence? Is it possible that Irving lost his case not because of his biased history but because his agenda was unacceptable? The central issue in the trial—as for Evans in this book—was not the past itself, but the way in which historians study the past. In a series of short, sharp chapters, Richard Evans sets David Irving's methods alongside the historical record in order to illuminate the difference between responsible and irresponsible history. The result is a cogent and deeply informed study in the nature of historical interpretation.

From Library Journal
As an expert witness for the defense in last year's Irving-Lipstadt trial, Evans (history, Cambridge Univ.) was charged with determining whether David Irving was, as Deborah Lipstadt asserted, a Holocaust denier. Evans spent two years researching Irving's work, tracing his sources, and then evaluating his publications and public speeches. Moving easily from analysis of Irving's abuse of primary documents to a discussion of what constitutes legitimate historical methodology, Evans presents compelling proof that Irving is a Holocaust denier and why he should not be considered a legitimate member of the historical profession. Evans's depiction of the trial and of Irving's behavior in court is followed by an assessment of the implications of the judgment in Lipstadt's favor. Evans's point that some commentators seemed to forget that it was Irving who was attempting to silence Lipstadt, rather than academic historians and "Jewish interest groups" attempting to stifle free speech, is well worth remembering. Evans eloquently argues that what was really on trial was history itself. Fortunately, history won. Ironically, Evans's carefully documented book has not yet been published in the U.K., as Irving's threats to bring a libel suit have already caused one company to drop publication. Highly recommended. Frederic Krome, Jacob Rader Marcus Ctr. of the American Jewish Archives, Cincinnati

From Booklist
When Deborah Lipstadt's Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory (1993), a groundbreaking book about the disturbing movement to refute the reality of the Holocaust, was published, one of the writers identified as a Holocaust denier, the Englishman David Irving, sued Lipstadt and her publisher, Penguin, for libel. Although Irving never earned a degree, he has written nearly 30 books about Hitler and other related subjects. His contention, therefore, was that Lipstadt had denigrated his work as a historian by accusing him of distorting the historical record to support his extreme anti-Semitic politics. The defense had to prove that Irving, in fact, had deliberately misrepresented the contents of relevant documents to conform to his sympathetic view of Hitler and his belief that nothing on the order of genocide occurred under Nazi rule. Evans, a Cambridge-based historian who specializes in modern German history, was retained by the defense as an expert witness, and he chronicles his arduous research effort with impressive lucidity. At question was the very bedrock of history: Is there such a thing as historical objectivity? Or, as Evans writes, "How do we know when a historian is telling the truth? . . . Wasn't it all a matter of interpretation?" Sensitive to these conundrums and the high emotional valence attached to the Holocaust, Evans was scrupulous in his examination of thousands of pages of documents, assiduously evaluating Irving's interpretation of such primary sources as Goebbels' diaries, always on the lookout for evidence of inaccuracies and bias. He found plenty, and he describes his discoveries with quiet and contagious excitement. By sharing his vast insider's knowledge and recounting his surreal experiences on the stand as Irving, who represented himself, conducted his chaotic cross-examinations, Evans enables readers to fully appreciate the significance of both Lipstadt's victory and Irving's exposure as exactly what he claimed not to be. There is such a thing as truth, and history, responsibly practiced, will reveal it. Donna Seaman

Music sensation Bird Barrett is hitting the road, headlining her first national tour after the launch of her second album. Singing to sold-out crowds can mess with a girl's sense of perspective, though. Luckily, Bird has her older brother, Dylan, and her best friend, Stella, along for the ride to keep her grounded.

Then Dylan and Stella pair off as more than friends. Feeling left behind, Bird throws herself completely into her performances, cover shoots, and high-profile interviews. And the more she tries to distract herself with her career, the further she pushes everyone away-including her longtime crush, Adam Dean, who joined the tour as her opener. When Bird breaks down, she'll need help to find her footing again. But has she pushed everyone too far? In a life like this one, a country girl needs her family and friends-and maybe an old flame-most of all.

A foot-stompin' finale to Alecia Whitaker's irresistible Wildflower series.

Review
Praise for The Road to You:"Whitaker's keen ability to write authentically in the voice of Bird offers readers a complete behind-the-scenes look at life in the fast lane of celebrity and success. The author's knowledge of music, especially songwriting, makes the story more authentic, and, as she did in the first novel, Whitaker includes an appended section with complete lyrics and music to Bird's next potential hit song. VERDICT Readers who enjoyed the first novel and those who are fans of country music will cheer Bird along the rocky road to fame and revel in her success."―School Library Journal

Praise for Wildflower:"Whitaker (The Queen of Kentucky) has a knack for evoking the feel of a live performance--both the atmosphere of the venue and what it's like to play on stage. She's created a winning protagonist in Bird.... Fans of shows like Nashville will fly through this like Bird on her fiddle."―PW

"What separates this novel from others featuring teenage superstars is how grounded Bird is, even as she struggles to process the dramatic changes taking place in her life... Genuine dialogue, a quick pace and a plot that strikes the right balance between realistic and fantastic make for an engaging read... This tender introduction to a newly minted country superstar sets the stage for a compelling series."―Kirkus Reviews

"Fans of country music will enjoy the contemporary references to well-known stars, and aspiring musicians will appreciate the detailed plotlines involving Bird's work in crafting music and song lyrics... Instant success isn't always this easy, but Wildflower gives the reader a satisfying novel with a cast of characters who are all worthy of making it to the top of the charts."―SLJ

"Whitaker's novel Wildflower is pitch perfect and bursting with soul and heart."―Gwendolyn Heasley, author of Where I Belong and Don't Call Me Baby

"Authentic, romantic, and entertaining--Wildflower and Bird will make you fly."―Rebecca Serle, author of The Edge of Falling andFamous in Love

Ok. Like I said for my review of Sing earlier in the year, sometimes you just want to read an entertaining book about a famous singer and all of the associated ups and downs that come with being in the spotlight. The Way Back Home is absolutely that book.

Alecia Whitaker brings us back into country singer Bird Barrett's world, where she's about to go on her first national tour. Her second album is skyrocketing in the charts, and Bird decides to bring along brother Dylan and best friend Stella to help out, as she hits stages across the country.

However, romance, new tour mates and some publicity snafus, help ensure that this is a tour that Bird isn't likely to forget...

It was a little surreal reading The Way Back Home, because it just happened to be released during the middle of the Taylor Swift/Kim Kardashian snapchat storm. And as I've always seen Bird as the fictional equivalent to Taylor, it felt a little meta.

But oddly enough, that meta aspect actually helped me empathize with Taylor, while I was joining Bird on her journey. Because Whitaker does a fantastic job of breaking down the stressors that come with being a skyrocketing success, and the various personal and professional struggles that come with said success.

Bird vacillates between enjoying the perks of her fame - her fans; the VIP access that she gets to clubs - but Whitaker also increasingly stresses the fact that Bird's life is also no longer her own. Her behavior needs to be moderated and contained each and every time she is in public, and Whitaker is so good at emphasizing how claustrophobic that type of expectation can feel. This is especially true, when Dylan and Stella begin dating publicly, and Bird realizes that she doesn't have the same luxury.

Alongside that claustrophia, is the underlying emphasis on the idea that the narrative of stars like Bird can be skewed for controversy and shock value. The latter half of the book deals with the stressors of public expectation and the subsequent fallout when that expectation isn't met, and Whitaker skillfully shows how straining it can be to have society place so much expectation on a single individual.

There's a specific section where Bird more or less hits her breaking point, and I wanted to stand up and cheer when Bird makes the life-saving decision to put her needs above everyone else's. Whitaker does a fantastic job of explaining why that isn't a selfish decision, and how asking for self-care is imperative. It's such an important lesson for young readers to learn, and I applaud Whitaker for going there.

While the book does have an adorable romance with familiar face Adam Dean, I almost felt like it was secondary to Bird's overall journey. There was so much emphasis on Bird's growth and recognition of her new status as a role model and a musical symbol, that all of her interactions with Adam seemed to just (re)emphasize that fact.

All in all, it seems fitting that as the third and final book in the trilogy, this is the book where Bird learns how to deal with her fame and personal life, in a way that ensures a successful career for years to come. So even though readers may not meet up with Bird again, it's not difficult to imagine her still out there, with a music catalogue that will span the ages.

Final verdict:

The Way Back Home is a heartwarming delight, and a perfect close to the Wildflower series. Bird Barrett has come full circle from burgeoning young talent to national star, while also learning many life lessons along the way.

Highly recommend, full stop.

Since its publication in 1982, Old Testament Survey has served as the standard textbook on the background, content, literary quality, and message of the Old Testament. The book now also includes important new contributions from six leading biblical studies scholars: Leslie C. Allen, James R. Battenfield, John E. Hartley, Robert L. Hubbard Jr., John E. Part 3 examines the Writings, including a special study of wisdom literature in general. Very informative book, but the authors ride the fence
By Dr. Marc Axelrod
I thought that this was a really interesting textbook. The authors reveal the message of each Old Testament book, while discussing some of the scholarly issues surrounding each part of the Old Testament (such as the JEDP theory). Unfortunately William Lasor passed away in 1991, so Hubbard (who is dead now too) and Bush recruited six other OT scholars to complete the revision. This may be one of the reasons why the authors ride the fence on issues such as whether or not we can take the numbers in Numbers literally, the number of Isaiah's, the historical worthiness of Joshua and Jonah, and the happenings surrounding the Exodus from Egypt. The authors also seem to lean toward the book of Jonah being a parable rather than actual history, although they don't take a really strong stand on that, either.

The reviewer who wrote that this book supports the JEDP theory was mistaken: In fact, the authors predict that this theory will eventually be out of vogue with scholarship. What the authors do affirm is that Moses was originally responsible for the Pentateuch and that through the centuries, the community revised and updated it.

And contrary to an earlier reviewer, I didn't find the book tedious at all: It was very well written and very interesting throughout. I especially appreciated the articles at the end about the Authority of the Old Testament for Christians, Messianic prophecy, and the chronological puzzle.

In short, I recommend this book, only wishing that the authors would take a stand on some of the issues discussed above.

Introduction to the Boost C++ Libraries; Volume I - Foundations, by Robert Demming, Daniel J. Duffy

C++ is one of the most important and influential programming languages for application development. It supports the modular, object- oriented and generic programming models and its flexibility has been one of the main reasons why it has been so successful. With the emergence of the Boost Libraries (boost.org) we see that C++ is brought to a new level, namely a set of reusable and modular template libraries that C++ developers can use in their applications.

This book is dedicated to a number of Boost libraries for higher-order functions, data types and data structures, libraries for text and string processing, multi-threading, random number generation and more. We also discuss how Boost and design patterns are used to promote the flexibility of code. Each library is described in a step-by-step manner. Numerous examples are given to show the functionality of each library. The full source code is freely available to purchasers of the book.

Very good description of many Boost libraries
    By AmazonFanboy
Introduction to the Boost C++ Libraries" is a great book. It goes well beyond the "lemur" book, and explains more libraries than that book did. It has some very good examples, and oftentimes explains the individual libraries much better than the Boost docs pages. I was hoping the chapter on Boost threads would be more extensive, but they promise more in Vol. 2 on multi-threading. I think any C++ programmer would find the book valuable.

    Not that useful for me
    By B. Daly
When I buy a programming book, I look for it to either work as a read-through tutorial/explanation of the material, or as a look-up reference, but unfortunately this book doesn't work that well as either. Overall readability wasn't so great and looking things up wasn't that helpful.

A big problem is the code examples. If you want an online copy of them, you have to literally rip a page out of your book and mail it to someplace in Europe, after which they will send you the code. Now, the book uses lots of code examples that print out results to illustrate their behavior, but it then fails to actual SHOW that output in the text. So if you're just reading along, you have to stop, type in the code (unless you mailed away for it), and then compile and run it. I'm sure that's worth it to save them those 6 or 7 lines of space in their textbook. Yeah, you can figure out what the examples are supposed to do just by reading the code, but why can't they make it clear and just show it? It's not like the book was running too long or anything: at less than 300 pages of actual material, it feels pretty overpriced.

I also found the index to be disappointingly weak. For example, the index entry for boost::bind(), a major boost library function, had a single page number. I found bind used on other pages, but they weren't listed in the index.

    Great Introductory Book
    By 08bkrishna
This book is amazing! I got this to start learning how to use the Boost libraries and it was the perfect introductory guide. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn all the ins and outs of Boost, as it contains great explanations and code examples. Only bad thing is the price, so I'll have to only give it 4.

    "Mastering Physics"?
    By Diana
Next time please dont include "With MasteringPhysics" because it made me think that it actually included the Mastering Physics to do my homework! It is obvious that the book belongs to a course that you can use on mastering physics. We are students and therefore it is not needed to lie and put with Mastering Physics when it doesn't come with it. Please dont do it again because I am a struggling student, to be taken advantage from like this. It was stupid of me to infer it actually did come with it but the wording of course made me think otherwise.

How I'm Using Essential College Physics
    By William E. Baumzweiger, M.D.
I''m learning Physics at the age of 70. Don't even ask me why. (Ask the Government.) I don't have time to explain. However, I'm studying Mathemtics, the Wolfson DVD Physics Course, Wolfson's College Physics, co-authored with Andrew Rex and his Essential University Physics all at the same time. That is just my way of learning at this age.
So far, I find it very useful. By studying Physics through a popular-DVD level course, a college level course and a University Level course I'm able to triangulate and integrate the information in ways that I could not simply by sitting down and reading one testbook. College Physics really helps in this triangulation / integration process.

So this rental seemed ok with your expected markings in a used book until this week. Its crunch time and the professor gave us 3 chapters 8 -11, read and do the problems. I read chapter 8 of something im already a bit confused about and go to do the problems. Then im like wtf im i chapter 9 let me turn back a few pages, well guess what someone ripped out chapter 8 question pages tbis got me into panic mode since it was due in the morning. I had to email everyone and their mother to piece the problems together. So then im reading and wtf did i skip something?, nope another page missing and one half torn. This has stressed me out so bad. If your looking for a book thats good through 7 chapters fine but this isnt for you if the class goes deep into it.

A playful, reassuring book that helps make saying goodbye a little easier.

In this deceptively simple picture book by the author of Some Helpful Tips for a Better World and a Happier Life, there’s a new goodbye on every page. Some of them are easy, like when it’s time to go home for supper. Some of them are funny, like when dogs say it with a growl. And some are much harder, like when a very best friend moves away.

With a bouncy rhyming text and vibrant, droll illustrations, this book of goodbyes leaves readers with a heartwarming thought: that for each goodbye, there’s always a new hello.

    From Booklist
A young boy finds that there is always something sad about saying good-bye, from Auntie’s “Toodle-oo, ta-ta, kiss-kiss” to Uncle’s southern drawling “G’bye, y’all . . . Take it easy.” Even slapping hands with cool Cousin Jazzy on a city street (“Gotta split, gotta blow, / see ya man, I gotta go”) gives the boy the blues. The ink-and-watercolor pictures show the boy’s warm greetings, as well as his melancholy partings. The most wrenching good-bye comes when a friend next door moves away, and the boy realizes that “Don’t be a stranger!” is not just cliché. Two big double-page spreads depict the boy left behind in empty space that reveals the meaning of “so long.” The simple rhyme and wordplay add dimension to the scenarios, which move in tone from casual to heartfelt, and will encourage kids to think about the feelings behind the familiar things that they hear and say. I'm a preschool teacher and one of my fellow teachers left abruptly in the middle of the school year. This of course sent the kids for a loop and left the staff wondering how best to explain and handle this situation. This book was PERFECT! It handles all different types of goodbyes, like saying goodbye after a playdate or to a parent at school but also touches upon more difficult goodbyes like when someone dies or moves away. I've used this book many times since I bought it and would recommend adding it to your schools' libraries.

The illustrations were pleasing and the author is exceptional. This book would be perfect for an end of the year read a loud for any elementary school.

    —Los Angeles Times

“Sphere may be Crichton’s best novel, but even if it ranked only second or third, it would be a must for suspense fans.”
    —Miami Herald

A classic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Crichton, Sphere is a bravura demonstration of what he does better than anyone: riveting storytelling that combines frighteningly plausible, cutting edge science and technology with pulse-pounding action and serious chills. The gripping story of a group of American scientists sent to the ocean floor to investigate an alien ship, only to confront a terrifying discovery that defies imagination, Sphere is Crichton prime—truly masterful fiction from the ingenious mind that brought us Prey, State of Fear, and Jurassic Park.

    Amazon.com Review
Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton is possibly the best science teacher for the masses since H.G. Wells, and Sphere, his thriller about a mysterious spherical spaceship at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, is classic Crichton. A group of not-very-complex characters (portrayed in the film by Sharon Stone, Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Queen Latifah) assemble to solve a cleverly designed roller coaster of a mystery while attempting (with mixed success) to avoid sudden death and expounding (much more successfully) on the latest, coolest scientific ideas, including the existence of black holes. Somehow, Crichton manages to convey the complicated stuff in utterly simplistic prose, making him, as his old pal Steven Spielberg puts it, "the high priest of high concept." Yet there is more to Crichton than science and big-ticket show biz. He is also, as any reader of his startling memoir Travels knows, a bit of a mystic--he is entirely open to notions spouted by spoon-bending psychics that most science writers would scorn. Sphere is not only a gratifying sci-fi suspense tale; it also reflects Crichton's keen interest in the unexplained powers of the human mind. When something passes through a black hole in Crichton's fiction, a lesson is learned. The book also contains another profound lesson: when you're staring down a giant squid with an eyeball the size of a dinner plate, don't blink first.

    From School Library Journal
YA As in Crichton's Andromeda Strain (Knopf, 1969), the focus of this science adventure tale is humankind's encounter with an alien life form. Within a space ship lying on the sea bottom is a mysterious sphere that promises each of the main characters some personal reward: military might, professional prestige, power, understanding. Trapped underwater with the sphere, the humans confront eerie and increasingly dangerous threats after communication with the alien object has been achieved. The story is exciting and loaded with scientific and psychological speculations that add interest at no cost to the action, including an intriguing sequence in which human and computer attempt to decode the alien communication. As the story races to an end, suspicions of evil-doing fall as many ways as in a detective novel. Young adults should find this book both accessible and satisfying. Mike Parson, Houston Public Library

    From Library Journal
Crichton has rolled the present, past, and future into one highly technical and confusing science fiction adventure. The present features, among others, a pompous astrophysicist, a female zoologist, a black mathematician, and a 53-year-old psychologist, who are summoned by the Navy to examine a plane crash in the South Pacific. The past is manifested in the stranded object resting on the sea bottom where it has been for some 300 years. When the four scientists, who carry their emotional minority baggage of sex, color, and age along with them, descend to the deep in their submersible, they discover the wreck to be no less than a spaceship from the future that fell through a black hole, defying time and space. Strange things begin to happen as one by one the cast of characters diminishes. Disappointing. Literary Guild dual main selection. Marion Hanscom, SUNY at Binghamton Lib.

A gripping, suspenseful, fast-paced science fiction thriller
    By Daniel Jolley
I was recently surprised to find this novel on one of my shelves; I saw the movie adaptation of the novel recently but did not remember owning the actual book. The movie was full of promise but ultimately disappointing, so I was pretty curious to see how good a read the actual novel was. Sphere is my first Michael Crichton novel, and I have to say I was quite impressed with Crichton's prowess. There are some logical flaws and inconsistencies in the plot, but Crichton is an incredibly gifted storyteller; I eagerly breezed through this novel in short order. While it is heavy on dialogue, the story touches on a number of aspects of the human personality while mixing in some profound if problematic science fiction in the process. This is a fast-paced thriller that definitely registers impressively on the suspense meter, particularly during the climactic late chapters. While the ending is something of a letdown, the story leading up to it is gripping and fascinating, and important clues and plot points are presented with much more subtlety and effectiveness than what you will find in the movie adaptation.
The novel is built around an incredible discovery; in the middle of the South Pacific, lying all but buried on the bottom of the ocean, rests a spacecraft of unknown origin. Psychologist Norman Johnson, the author of a secret government paper on Recommendations for the Human Contact Team to Interact with Unknown Life Forms (a less than serious paper he wrote primarily for the money) is called to the site, where he is informed that he will be part of a team of scientists sent to study the mysterious craft. Alongside him are an irascible Navy project commander, a brilliant, young astrophysicist/planetary geologist, a complicated female zoologist/biochemist, and a noted mathematician/logician. This unlikely team of deep ocean explorers soon find themselves in an artificial habitat resting alongside the location of the mysterious ship. Their exploration of the site yields more questions than answers, as the ship turns out to be an American spaceship from the future. The truly enigmatic discovery onboard, though, is a giant sphere of unknown composition. As the story unfolds, the team of explorers finds themselves effectively stranded on the ocean floor for a period of some days, and strange and frightening things begin to happen after one scientist somehow enters the sphere. The scientists find themselves in communication with a supposedly alien entity who calls himself Jerry; whoever and whatever Jerry is, he seems to have the power to manifest remarkable physical creations and changes in reality. The habitat and the team inside it soon comes under attack by such dangerous creatures as giant squid and killer jellyfish, but the problems eventually internalize themselves inside the group dynamic, a group that is shrinking in size as time goes by. The mysterious Sphere imparts an amazing power to those who enter it, a power that such individuals may not even be consciously aware of wielding. Ultimately, the last remnants of the research team begin pointing fingers at one another and take steps to insure their own individual survival in the face of an unquantifiable threat, making this novel a gripping psychological thriller based in a fascinating science fiction environment.
Once the team arrives in the underwater habitat, nonstop action ensues. One emergency after another challenges the crew, and the group dynamic of the team ebbs and flows along with each jarring crisis. Along the way, we see ever more clearly into the minds and ways of thinking of our main characters, and a significant amount of ideas are expressed concerning the human condition. Crichton provides for no obligatory rest areas along the way, as he takes the reader for an incredible ride that had me turning pages hand over fist in anticipation of what was to come. Some of the science is questionable, but Crichton surely makes it all sound more than plausible. The only real problem with the novel is a logical breakdown of sorts in the concluding chapters. Still, the desperate attempts of the remaining explorers to survive, when they cannot even trust one another, make for a riveting reading experience. Sphere is by no means a perfect novel, but I found it captivating and basically addictive up until the somewhat disappointing ending. The movie adaptation takes significant liberties with the original story, so I would urge you not to let the movie's failings prevent you from immersing yourself in this eminently readable novel.

    Good Crichton, not his best
    By Derek Armstrong
Intriguing as always, exciting from the first page, strong for the first 2/3rds and less "editorializing" than usual, but it's just not as good as his higher concept novels. But it's still very enjoyable all the way through, and as always makes you think. It feels a little dated now, but I re-read it last week and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Sphere should definitely be a part of any Crichton fan's library. Skip the movie, though. Here, the science is less "convincing" than in Jurrassic Park (which is mostly convincing, but stretched) and Prey (which is better writing and fun, but not convincing). But that doesn't matter, because Crichton can write an adventure like few others (as long as character isn't important--character's here take backseat to concept and science). Pace, as always is good. More a rollicking adventure than "something to think about" (typical of later novels) and quite enjoyable on that level. It's the kind of novel you'll tear through in a weekend at most. And that's a good thing.

    Extremely Enjoyable Popcorn
    By Gary F. Taylor
You've got to give it to Michael Crichton: he writes one heck of a page-turner. Open one of his books with the idea that you'll just read a chapter or two before bedtime and you'll suddenly be bleary-eyed at three in the morning. And although this particular title, which is somewhat less well known than such Crichton novels as THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN and JURASSIC PARK, it still packs a bestseller wallop.

The premise is classic Crichton. In his younger days, psychologist Norman Johnson was approached by the United States government to write a report on the psychological impact of an encounter with extra-terrestrials--and now, on the basis of his rather flippant recommendations, he finds himself en route to a possible UFO crash sight on the floor of the Pacific ocean. Once established with his colleges in an underwater habitat, the government team encounters a mysterious space craft that contains a still-more mysterious sphere, and those who come into contact with it undergo an unexpected change.

The writing is crisp and clean, the hard science is handled quite skillfully, and Crichton plays out his story at a breathless pace: yes, a page-turner if ever there was one. Still, it is worth noting that SPHERE displays Crichton's weaknesses as clearly as it does his strengths. Strictly speaking, Crichton hasn't had an original concept in some thirty years, and just as he rehashed his screenplay for WESTWORLD into the novel JURASSIC PARK, so does he rehash THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN into SPHERE. The novel also contains both the foundational sexism and ambiguous conclusion so typical of Crichton's work.

Ultimately, SPHERE is popcorn: we've all had it before and you can't make a truly satisfying meal of it. But it is tremendously enjoyable all the same, and where is SPHERE is concerned... well, you'll eat every kernel in the bowl.
