RATING FOR THE KINDLE VERSION - DO NOT BUY FOR KINDLE!

This book is really good, but I should have listened to the previous comment about the KINDLE VERSION being difficult to read. The footnotes are not accessible and where pictures should be it just says "can't put photo" or something. I bought this one week ago exactly and it will not let me return it. I wish I could return it and get the hard copy, it is really a good book but I do not enjoy reading it on the kindle because I feel like I am missing a lot and that is no fun.

Great book. I can't believe I took so long to get around to buying it. It's not necessarily the type of book I'd read over and over, but I will definitely be lending it to friends to read. Just a very well written book and obviously a unique story. If you like Criminal Minds, Law and Order and those kind of shows you will love this book. Written from the prosecutor's perspective, there are details and explanations that are just...well, real.

Recommended.

I purchased the hard copy as recommend by another reader. Apparently the kindle version doesn't have the pictures that are in the hard copy. If that's the case (I can't be sure because I didn't order the kindle copy), I would HIGHLY recommend you purchase and read this one!

I loved this book. Incredibly interesting and detailed. Could not put it down. Have read it 3 times in a row. Such a sad gruesome true crime story. Vincent Bugliosi, prosecutor in the Sharon Tate and LaBianca murders captured details from beginning to end of each case. An amazing attorney and author. Recommended for any and all who enjoy true crime stories and can handle some gore and heartache:( as this book has it all.

The Amazon paperback version is not the full book.

This copy (produced by Amazon LLC) is not in fact the actual book by Nevil Shute, but a poor abridgement of it. It clocked in at 207 pages, 23 lines per page, versus 320 pages at 33 lines per page in my 1957 edition. It reads like the book condensed for English language learners. First line, second paragraph, has gone from "He woke happy, and it was some time before his conscious senses realized and pinned down the origin of this happiness," to "He woke happy, and was not sure why."

Amazon should be embarrassed to put out this product without labeling it for what it is.

This is one great book - it should be required reading in elementary, middle, and high school to give students a perspective on what uncontrolled aggression, combined with nuclear arms, can do to our world. Perhaps with the proper understanding of what can happen if renegade powers are allowed to develop nuclear weapons those renegades will be frustrated by rational people, with more than talk. It is simply a matter of making it clear to those who would be adversely affected by an irrational nuclear attack that it is foolish to weaken ourselves to the point of vulnerability. Our Citizens must be made aware of the consequences of "playing nice" with renegade powers and individuals. That doing so poses a dire threat to the whole world. This book is a perfect primer for the youth of our Country to help them come to an understanding of what's at stake if we become complacent about the issue and drop our guard.

Since it had been so many years, I was having trouble remembering why the book has always been at top of my list of 'favorites'. So I bought it and read it again. I was reminded why it has been, and still is, my favorite book. Long before the apocalyptic world became such a popular genre, as it is now, Nevil Shute was able to capture the essence of what happens to folks when they know in their heart of hearts their time on earth is drawing to an end, but have such a hard time accepting that their plans to have a garden bloom next year are so senseless. Great book, simple story, that captivates the era, the eternal hope of human kind, the inevitable fate that awaits us all.

The author even reviews a process to set up a preventive maintenance program. Highly recommended.

Beware: This is NOT a "Ray Charles" Collection!

This book is, mostly, a collection of the original sheet music of songs Ray Charles performed and recorded. In other words, they are the original versions, NOT the versions that Ray recorded. For example, "Georgia On My Mind" is the original Hoagie Carmichael version from 1930, NOT the ultra-smooth version Brother Ray so cooly laid down. Some of the sheets are useable, like "Crying Time," and "Born to Lose," but almost all are NOT the Ray Charles version. You have been warned!

When my publisher first approached me with the idea of reimagining The Pilgrim's Progress, I was immediately interested--but I didn't want to paraphrase it or anything like that. I wanted to retell the story as a fantasy adventure rather than an allegory. So, I dove into the story headfirst. They loved the concept and we went for it.
Hint: This book was out of print for a while. Look for the newest edition, published by AMG, because I altered and re-edited nearly every scene to sharpen the story.

A Delightful Reimagining of the Pilgrim's Progress

Although many might not fully like this book, it is a refresher to countless fantasties of christian ideas that have lost focus. Some Christian Fantasy have forgotten that the journey to Heaven and the trials that we face is the real battle. The characters are interesting in this story though not fully explored. The perils in this novel are interesting enough to make you want keep reading to the end. This is a delightful reimagining of the classic story, The Pilgrim's Progress.

Let THE Story Touch Your Heart Again...

There is only one story that really matters: THE story of God reaching down into history to redeem a people for Himself. We live in that story, as we journey as vagabonds toward heaven. Four hundred years ago, a prisoner in an English jail retold THE story in such a fresh and masterful way that his words have been a bestseller ever since. That prisoner, of course, was John Bunyan, and his retelling of THE story was his masterpiece Pilgrim's Progress.

Now, a master storyteller of our generation has taken his turn at retelling THE story with the novel Quest for Celestia: A Reimagining of the Pilgrim's Progress. Patterned after the manner of Pilgrim's Progress, Quest for Celestia follows a young man, Kadin, as his eyes are opened to a great quest to visit a glorious city. His perilous journey takes him through the same type of allegorical adventures and dangers that echo both Bunyan and every Christian's life. Written in a fast-paced first-person style, this novel is an easy read akin to the Chronicles of Narnia. It has both a male and female protoganonist with a mild dash of romance thrown in to better appeal to readers of both sexes. Entertaining and inspiring, Quest for Celestia is a great read for young and old, both those familiar with Bunyan's original masterpiece and those new to the genre of imaginative retellings of God's redemptive story.

Steven James has captured the heart of the true Christian journey. This book is wonderfully entertaining as well a mirror to our own lives and the choices we make. I think this book is marketed for young adults/teens, but it is written in such a way to appeal to adults as well. Definitely worth the read, especially if you need a little inspiration in your Christian walk.

A great summary of the life of Adam Sandler.

This book, Adam Sandler: Not Too Shabby, is a great look at the life of Adam Sandler. Starting in his days as a child, this book tell most everything in the life of this crazy movie star's life. Revealed in this book are alot of the secrets behind Adam's movies. Not only do you learn about Adam, you also get to learn about some of his co-stars from his movies. This easy-to-read book is great for all ages but I wouldn't recommend it unless you like Adam Sandler and his movies.

I really liked this book. i m 12 and i thought that it was easy to read and to the point. The pics were great along with the captions. The book taught me a lot about Adam Sandler. I am a big fan of his so i want to know as much as i can about him. This book showed someparts of Adam that most people don't see. The real people who knew him talked a lot in this book and your get a real feel that your really know how he was and is now. I think it was a really good book.

Early Client of Cicely Review

I first met Cicely Berry in 1962. Yes, really, 1962. I needed to improve my voice fast for a film I was about to star in - "Sammy Going South" called "A Boy Ten Feet Tall" in the badly cut American version. In 12 sessions of 2 hours each over 6 weeks, she taught me massive amounts about how to change and use my voice. For the last 18 years, I have been a professional speaker and voice trainer. Some of the exercises Cicely taught me are still being used by me with very high earning/level/profile people in acting and corporate life.

This book shows how deep her knowledge is and how to understand, find and release your voice. I use a lot of very different training methods as well - and, at the same time, know that Cicely is the queen of acting voice coaches. Buy the book and be prepared to work with it. If you don't want to work, don't bother to buy it!

A must have for the student or professional actor....

Once upon a time, I studied theatre at LAMDA in the 1970s and this book was a required purchase.

I have still have my original copy and while I am no longer an actor, I feel it is a valuable read for even those considering public speaking and giving lecture demonstrations.

Forget about the Actor's Studio and naturalistic acting! We're paying huge prices for theater in New York City and I want to hear every, single word spoken on that stage. Dagnabbit. Cicely Berry's book will have you speaking Harold Pinter and Shakespeare as if you were born for it.

Encyclopedic ...

... by which I mean a small amount of information about each of a large number of facts, with very little analysis or insight. And, just about as interesting to read as chapter after chapter of encyclopedia entries.

Looking at each chapter's bibliography, you can tell that the authors spent a lot of time poring over back issues of Aviation Week and other publications, so that might save you some time if you are researching a specific failure. And they do have a very extensive collection of failures - this is not just Apollo 13 and Ariane 5.

I was surprised to find mention (and a small amount of detail) of some of the relatively minor programs I have been involved with over the last 15 years or so. However, the visually spectacular failure of the Conestoga launch vehicle (certainly in the category of "minor players") wasn't covered, so this can't be said to be a definitive collection of every launch or spacecraft failure.

If you want to know how failures are analyzed post-mortem, or what processes and procedures are put in place to learn from those mistakes, you won't find it here. This is really just a diary of the timeline of failures in the Space Age.

Excellent book on space failures

This book examines failures related to space exploration in general. It is thorough, much more than I expected. A bit depressing, but it provides invaluable insight into the science, art and craft of building and launching satellites.

The book is divided in two quite different parts: launchers and satellites, with a special chapter on repairs undertaken from the space shuttle.
The launcher part is organized by launchers types, and has a very good objective of putting things in historical perspective, a very good point. The satellite part is organized by failures types. This is a wise way to do in this case.

There is not much to do in case of problems on a launcher apart from doing fault analysis, with corrections to be applied to the next launches. This is quite different and much more interesting with problems on satellites or probes.

They are examples of missions which looked like total write-offs being rescued by the skills and intelligence of engineers using treasures of imagination and ingenuity to rescue a mission, sometimes exceeding the objectives planned originally for the mission. ( Hipparcos, Deep Space 1, etc ) This makes the reading of this section very interesting, sometimes feeling like a thriller.

The real added value of this book is the description of the incredible ingenuity applied by engineers and operators to solve the problems when a satellite fails in orbit, therefore out of physical reach. This is the best part and shows that in general, human being are better to adapt to given situations and solve problems imposed on them than being able to predict them and act accordingly beforehand.

This is proven by the number of incredibly stupid faults described in the book, from the decimal point misplaced, to the calculations made in imperial units instead of metric, leading sometimes to billion size dollars bills.

I regret that some important recap tables (page 157) and some figures are not better printed or be made more readable. Also a good improvement would be to put a success/failures table at the end of each section covering a given launcher.

Also, I regret the absence of a simple tutorial chapter explaining the basics of rocket and satellite event recording and telemetry, the amount and nature of the parameters recorded, the various captors and a basic description of the procedures of post-mortem analysis. This would help appreciate even more the reading of the book.

No real insight or investigation

The references at the end of each chapter are mostly from Aviation Week. Basically, it is a collection of the press releases and Aviation Week reporting on the incidents covered in the book. That IS useful, but it could be so much more powerful with the insight that engineers who worked these programs could have brought.

All the information is available and some of the conclusions don't stand the test of time. One glaring example, when discussing the Chinese launch of commsats "18 July 1998 effectively marked the end of Chinese participation in the commercial launcher market." This has proved laughably untrue as China is one of the dominate players, whereas it is the USA that pushed out of this market.
