About the Author

Kathleen Stassen Berger completed her undergraduate education at Stanford University and Radcliffe College, earned her M.A.T. from Harvard University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Yeshiva University. Her broad range of experience as an educator includes directing a preschool, teaching philosophy and humanities at the United Nations International School, teaching child and adolescent development to graduate students at Fordham University, teaching inmates earning paralegal degrees at Sing Sing Prison, and teaching undergraduates at both Montclair State University and Quinnipiac University. She has also been involved in education as the president of Community School Board in District Two in Manhattan.�

For over three decades, Berger has taught human development at Bronx Community College of the City University of New York. The students Kathleen Berger teaches every year come from diverse ethnic, economic, and educational backgrounds representing a wide range of interests and consistently honor her with the highest teaching evaluations.

Berger’s developmental texts are currently being used at nearly 700 colleges and universities in a dozen countries and in five languages. Kathleen’s research interests include adolescent identity, sibling relationships, and bullying. As the mother of four daughters, as well as a new grandmother, she brings to her teaching and writing ample firsthand experience with human development.

Broad Overview Text

This loose leaf version of the text is an amazing bargin. However, the publisher did not take into account how you would store the papers - the holes punched in it do NOT fit in a standard 3-ring binder, they are not spaced properly. This happened to every student in my course.

The text provides an informative, easy-to-read introduction to developmental psychology. Some students found the numerous side notes to be a bit distracting while going through their chapters.

I used this edition instead of the 2nd edition

I used this edition instead of the newer 2nd edition for my Fall 2014 Developmental Psy class. The chapters are the same as the newer edition with the only differences being page numbers and a few pictures that were added. Buy the 1st edition, its much cheaper and there is very little difference between this one and the 2nd edition.

Good Textbook, Not Much Difference From Newer Editions

I bought this to save the money from the newer edition and so far haven't noticed any needed changes with my tests at all, been passing them no problems! This is a pretty informative text about the lifespan from fetus to oldage, each chapter covering each stage of the human development. It is interesting for a parent, a psychology student, sociology student, future teacher or anyone really. Highly Recommended!

I chose Pride and Prejudice because it is one of Jane Austen's most famous novels. While I was reading it I soon discovered that marriage is the main theme of the novel. I want to compare the different kinds of marriages described in the novel putting emphasis on the marriage of the hero-ine and the hero. I want to show the importance of marriage in women's eyes in the 18th century. In a further step I will take a closer look at the ending of the novel which has often been described as a fairytale ending on the one hand and as confirmation of patriarchal structures on the other. I want to show that the ending can be interpreted in a different way. I shall reveal that marriage in Pride and Prejudice is not only the essence romantic novels are made of but rather important to the existence of women in the 18th century.

Doesn't work well at all...

This is the worst e-book I've ever used. The information is all there, which is the only reason it's not receiving one star. The formatting is awful, the table of contests is poorly organized, and the links to various sections of the book don't work--forcing you to manually scroll page by page through the textbook. Thank God I'm only renting it and didn't pay to purchase it!

The book starts off with the expected and necessary sections on DNA structure, replication, and mechanisms of gene expression. From personal preference, the third chapter (Mechanisms of Disease) may have been better placed after the subsequent chapter on Patterns of Inheritance, but the clear descriptions associated with each section make it easy for readers to pick and choose the order in which they want to study the material. Subsequent chapters cover the techniques used in the traditional areas of cytogenetics and molecular genetics, with a useful intervening chapter on the more molecular aspects of cytogenetics, including the relatively recent uptake of array-based methods in clinical cytogenetics. This leads nicely into the final sections on prenatal diagnosis, genetic counselling and ethical issues, which provide a necessary appreciation of the implications of this technology. The material in this book is clearly laid out, and provides a comprehensive overview of the subject. The chapter on mechanisms of disease may not be new to scientists, but for those working in the clinical field without a strong science background these concepts may be fairly new to them. Human Genetics will aid in their understanding of different conditions, and the reports issued enabling them to translate this in a clear manner to patients. Throughout the book clear illustrations are used to clarify the techniques described and complement the text. It is particularly helpful to have 'true to life' pictures when the authors have described certain techniques, such as raw DNA sequence information as well as some of the cancer genetics techniques. These can only be truly understood by seeing a realistic output of the data to be analysed. The book is clearly written from a scientific perspective and, although it touches on some of the aspects of clinical genetics, it is important to realise that this is only very brief. This is the weaker side of the book, and so anyone in the clinical field would certainly need to be exploring clinical issues further, particularly in relation to complex family issues and the psychosocial aspects of genetic counselling. This book would be a useful text for those studying biomedical sciences or a Masters course in genetic counselling. Although there is no great depth to the book, and students will need to look elsewhere for more comprehensive texts on particular aspects, it does bring together the laboratory and clinical aspects of genetics. It also traces the path from the original discussion with a patient, through sample extraction to the laboratory techniques as well as exploring the mechanisms underlying the origin of the relevant genetic changes. -- C. The preface to this book says that it, as was the first edition, should be relevant to first year undergraduates and newcomers to the medical profession; it is intended as an introduction to human genetics, to supplement other basic textbooks. The implication that the reader should already have a grounding in basic genetics is well founded. I doubt that the introductory chapters on cytogenetics (which gets into exons and introns) and molecular genetics would be understood without a previous grasp of the relation between the DNA triplet sequence in a gene with the amino-acid sequence of the corresponding protein. The authors have done a commendable job of updating the remarkable advances in molecular genetics of the past few years, ranging from new epigenetic insights, through automated techniques for high through-put screening, to the use of microarrays in molecular cytogenetics. But scanning of the volume suggests that it would be more suitably directed to laboratory, rather than clinical geneticists. There is, for example, a full page box listing the constituents of a culture medium, more suited to a lab manual than a text book. Nowhere does the book list the credentials of the authors, but a Google search reveals that Dr Davies is Head of Laboratories at the Southmead Hospital, Bristol, UK. Laboratory geneticists should find the sections on molecular cytogenetics (FISH, CGH), molecular genetics (Southern blotting, PCR), cancer genetics, and prenatal diagnosis particularly useful. Clinical geneticists may appreciate them as a source of information about what lies behind the reports of molecular diagnoses they receive from the laboratories. Clinical geneticists would be better off to turn to one of the other texts recommended at the ends of each chapter. Multifactorial inheritance gets short shrift, having only a few sentences in a section entitled "Gradation of Inheritance". And multifactorial conditions are not in the list of reasons for referral to genetic services - presumably because they usually do not engender requisitions for laboratory tests. The chapter on genetic counseling does not mention the use of empirical recurrence risks in genetic counseling, or include anything about its psychodynamics. There are remarkably few typographical errors (I only found one), and a few unclear or incorrect statements. The colored illustrations are of good quality, and some are beautiful, including that on the cover, but the black and white ones need some improvement.
