what would that look like? " Most surprising though

I would argue this is the most thoughtful formal treatment of this topic available. Keith Wiley makes a distillation of decades of argument, speculation, and discussion on mind-uploading yet manages to keep it organized, thoughtful, and coherent. While no one can yet answer how we would do it, this author doesn't bother with that. Instead, he concentrates on the question, "If we could, what would that look like?"

Most surprising though, even if you are not interested in the idea of mind-uploading, the book is still compelling. In the process of tackling the big questions of this unusual topic, he purposefully takes on some of the big questions of philosophy of mind and theories about consciousness. I found myself making a list of further reading my second time through this book.

It's a short book, but not necessarily an easy one. Yet I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the relationship of mind to body, consciousness, and/or identity.

An excellent discussion of uploading

An excellent discussion of uploading, a topic that is only now beginning to be discussed seriously and will be one of the major issues of the 21st century. I especially enjoyed the taxonomy on the many possible uploading scenarios. I also concur with Dr. Wiley's conclusions regarding moving beyond traditional views of identity that no longer apply given what are learning about neuroscience and what will happen with uploading and AI.

The conclusion by most authors in this work indicates that whatever is coming things will not remain the same. From AI, to uploading, to future society, this is a great book.

About the Author

Animesh Das, Ph.D., is presently working as a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He earned his Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Dr. Das's areas of interest are pavement material characterization, pavement analysis, pavement design, and pavement maintenance. He has authored many technical publications in various journals. Dr. Das has received a number of awards in recognition of his contribution in the field, including an Indian National Academy of Engineers Young Engineer award (2004) and a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Fellowship (2012-13). A good read. A welcome addition to your arsenal.

We are often faced with the challenges of operating the plethora of tools available in today's advanced DAW's, and there are a lot of technical publications geared at just that. Although this book glances at some of those specifics, it doesn’t go into them too deeply. What it does is look at recording conceptually.

The author has provided three main sections; corrective editing, creative editing, and restorative editing. Each section is comprised of several chapters. Even though the book centers more on the theoretical, at the end of every chapter it concludes with a hands-on approach. Comprehensively enough the hands on sections cover each of the most popular DAW’s mainly Pro tools, Logic One, Cubase, and Studio One.

My first computer-based recording system comprised of a Windows DOS based 286 with a MIDI card that would record digital based instruments, mainly my Roland synth while at the same time producing an SMTPE time code in order to sync with my Sony 4 track reel to reel tape recorder which would handle all the analog instruments such as guitar and voice. The author reflects on that era and how it evolved into the here and now.

This book being grounded in theory as well as some hands-on is a good treatise for the intermediary technician looking for a way to conceptually approach their art. The author has a lighter prose style and understands the material so well that his conceptual jargon is easy to understand in light of the application he is trying to illustrate. All in all an enjoyable read as well as an enlightened one

This is an excellent technique instructional

First, this is NOT intended for audio recording and editing neophytes!

It is for the experienced editor who wants to learn advanced techniques for corrective, creative and restorative editing. While primarily oriented toward Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase and Studio One, the techniques can be applied to any moderately sophisticated DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). You may have to search for the specific controls in other programs.

The book is principally text with a few black and white illustrations which some have found fault with. I don't: this is a book filled with specific instructions and explanations of what you are doing a certain thing. It is not a learn-by-pictures kind of thing. It is a teaching manual, not a picture book.

For example, the (very detailed, very interesting) chapter on time-stretching has twelve solid pages of explanation on what time-stretching is before it moves to ten pages of application specific instructions.

For the audio technician who knows something, but not everything, this is an excellent technique instructional. For those who are just starting out, look elsewhere.

The M41 Walker Bulldog was a U.S. light tank developed to replace the M24 Chaffee. Production started in 1951 at Cadillac's Cleveland Tank Plant, and by 1953 the tank replaced the M24 in the United States Army. Initially the M41 was nicknamed "Little Bulldog", then renamed "Walker Bulldog" after General Walton Walker, who was killed in a jeep accident in Korea in 1950. The Walker Bulldog saw limited combat with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, but for the most part, the conflict served as a testing ground to work out the tank's rangefinder. In 1954, the M41A1 variant was produced with a hydraulic turret traverse instead of an electrical one. The more compact system allowed for increased ammunition. Created in 1956, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M41 and M41A1’s design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details the sighting equipment, crew formations, firing duties and more. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Army FM for M41 Bulldog

This is an Army Field Manual for the M41 Bulldog. It is no longer in service, so the manual is really useless to the average person looking for a coffee table book about tanks - unless you happen to be a tank buff and enjoy looking at the typical military instruction manual given to the crews of the M41.

Make no mistake. This is not a history book about the M41, it is a paperback repro of the original FM. If you understand what that means, you will not be disappointed with this purchase.

A masterful screen play of a classic novel

I got this script because characters in another movie were arguing about Mansfield Park ( the novel) and of all Jane Austin's work, it was one I knew nothing about. I may still know nothing about the novel,but I want to see this movie! I think that the abolishionist sub-theme may be the reason
this novel is less well known? It seems clear that in this movie Jane Austin is very much shown as a feminist? Her men are either brutes or angels
with little sympathy for their humanity?
I liked this script: it seems very well written.

Blythe Lucero has been coaching swimming for more than 25 years. She currently oversees two teams, Berkeley Aquatic Masters, and Berkeley Barracudas, where she brings her passion for swimming to the development and training of swimmers of all ages, from novice to world class. Blythe grew up in Berkeley, California, in a large athletic family. She swam competitively in her youth, achieving All-American status in college. In addition to coaching swimming, she trains Water Safety Instructors for the Red Cross. The three book series Coach Blythes Swim Workouts follows the successful book The 100 Best Swimming Drills, and Masters Swimming - A Manual.

This is a good book. It is divided in 4 basic parts, one for each stroke (butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke). At each part there is an introduction which emphasizes the most important things to remember about the stroke. The exercises contained in each part are categorised in the following way:

Body position drills
Kick drills
Arm stroke drills
Recovery drills
Breathing drills
Leverage drills and
Coordination drills.

Each drill group aims to emphasize a basic principle. The classification mentioned above does not mean that the drills are isolated exercises of a bodypart. On the contrary, each drill evolves in steps in such a way as to embed it progressively to the stroke.

The figures and the description of the drills are quite clear and the part I like most is the DRILL FEEDBACK CHART, which is a table at the end of each drill which mentions problems you might encounter when applying the drill and what to do to resolve them.
I have been using it for a while and I have realised that little can be gained by reading it at once. It is better to focus on a few drills (even one for some time) and refer back to the book after or before your practice.

This is a terrific book for swimmers and coaches. The drills can fit just about any category of swimmer, from beginner to one looking to hone their swimming ability. Pictures, diagrams and well written text make for an easy format to understand and look up specific drills.

*I think the best thing is the section for corrections if you can't seem to get the drill right.

I highly recommend for anyone looking to improve their swim.

About the Author

Otared Haidar, PhD, Mst, PGDip, DPhil, (Oxon), specializes in Arabic and comparative literature and has taught Arabic language and literature at many institutions. She is a full faculty member in the Islamic World and the Middle East at the Faculty of the Oriental Studies, University of Oxford, where she teaches Arabic and Arabic Media.

Excellent book

While I agree, it could explain some things in more detail, to make them clearer, it is a great book for beginners. The other reviewer said it had no markings, no audio which doesn't make sense to me. First of all, its not a course book, its a grammar book. Most grammar books do not come with audio; none of the McGraw-Hill grammar books for other languages come with audio. They already assume that if you are reading the material and writing the lessons in the book, you already know what the words are, what they mean and how they sound/pronounced. Same for markings; they teach you in most courses from the early beginning stages, here and also in the Middle East, not to rely on markings to learn words. They introduce you to a word once or twice and then you never see the markings again. They do away with them early in language learning so you don't use them as a crutch, because newspapers, books and magazines in Arabic, mostly do not have markings for you to sound out every word, its assumed you already know. I think he was looking for a course book and this isn't one. If you don't know how to read Arabic already, understand some vocabulary and can't figure out how to pronounce Arabic words without markings, then maybe you should wait until you get a little further before you buy this book. If you can't read in Arabic script simple sentences like, "My name is...", "I want this book", or other really simple sentences, you may struggle but I would suggest getting it anyway! If you do, it is a good book for not only picking up grammar but in helping you structure simple sentences and learn some new vocabulary. It also helps you retain words and practice Arabic, by making you write lessons down in the book in ARABIC not English; I love that about this book! That helps you to also, practice your handwriting and thinking in your head on how to structure sentences, in Arabic and get away from English. Pronouns and prepositions is one of the things in Arabic that can give most beginners, frustration and headaches and this book is good at showing you how to use them with example sentences and having you write down sentences so that you can reinforce that in your memory. Great beginner book, and by that I mean, mid-beginner not brand new beginner; it really is worth buying. If you are intermediate or advanced, it will probably be too basic for you but would be great to have as a reference book!

Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Pronouns and Prepositions

I purchased this book as part of the commonly bought together three pack of Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Vocabulary, Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Pronouns and Prepositions and Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Verb Tenses.

As someone who was attempting to learn the language on his own, I found these books to be helpful with providing me with the basics of the language, not to mention providing extra words, phrases and other helpful terms. Plus, getting three 190+ page books for ~$30, it was also a great bargain.

This is an excellent book for understanding and practicing Arabic grammar/ sentence structure. It gives thorough explanations and so much practice. Each small activity builds upon the next. This book takes the mystery out of Arabic sentence structure!
