Holy Crap!

Holy Crap! This book just bitch slapped me. I could not put it down and was up all night. A few things you need to know: there are some triggers (drug use, abuse) but its very well written and handled. CLIFFHANGER (just warning you!).
You must read this book. I can't stop thinking about it. I plan to write a full review on my blog once I process everything that just happened to me at the hands of a book. Seriously, the feels, man.

this book just ripped out my heart and stomped on it

Oh, this book- what do I say about this book that just ripped my heart out? I will start by saying it was very well written and overflowed with emotion. The story is told in dual POV so we get inside both Hadley and Reed's heads. And man oh man Hadley's head is a scary place at times over the course of the book but Reed's POV helped me to understand him and ultimately find a way to root for him as the story unfolded.

Fighting to Start covers several years in their lives and really focuses on how one decision can effectively cause a ripple effect as the resulting waves transform everything in ways you never would have predicted. And that story is far from pretty - miscommunications, secrets and heartache abound and are compounded by poor decisions made as s result.

That leads me to my struggle with the book overall. I am a person who reads for enjoyment and to find a happy place to lose myself for awhile. There is enough that happens in real life that can bring me down that I won't necessarily read a book that inflicts this type of emotional turmoil on me without preparing myself for it and really being in the right frame of mind to approach it properly. Unfortunately I went into the story somewhat blind, and after forcing myself to read through to the end, I found an unresolved ending that left me more than a little bit cranky and teary eyed.

So with that being said, the author did write an engaging and emotional story that was a page turner for sure. People who thrive on the emotional roller coaster and constant drama/ angst should definitely 1-click this story. I just personally was not in the proper mindset for this type of story when I read it and felt like I had been put through an unwelcome wringer right alongside them by the time I got to the last page. Part 2 of their story is still a few months away and it seems as though there are more secrets to be revealed particularly on Hadley's part in Fighting to Stay although I have a good idea what one of them will be already based on a few hints dropped in Fighting to Start. And yes I will probably read the next installment with the added benefit of being able to prep myself for it better the next time around.

If I could I would give it more!!!! This story sucked me in from the beginning. It's a awesome book about love and what we go through to get what we deserve! !! This book made me mad made me cry and made me laugh. What more can you ask for? It is one of my top reads!!! Thank god I was given a arc copy of this!!! Everyone needs to get this book and fall in love like I did!!!

For the account of her legacy, her present influence, and how her example is being sustained and adapted, they have depended on extensive field studies in Nigeria, and documents pertaining to the efforts of women in Nigeria and the USA to develop a collective voice and establish their rights as women and Muslims in today's societies.

Beverley B. Mack is Associate Professor of African Studies at the University of Kansas. She is co-editor (with Catherine Coles) of Hausa Women in the Twentieth Century and co-author (with Jean Boyd) of The Collected Works of Nana Asma'u, 1793-1864 and One Woman's Jihad: Nana Asma'u Scholar and Scribe. Jean Boyd is former Principal Research Fellow of the Sokoto History Bureau and Research Associate of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She is the author of The Caliph's Sister and Sultan Siddiq Abubakar III.

Sullivan, blind from birth, learned a lot at the Perkins School for the Blind. But as his 12th birthday approached, he desperately wanted to break out of his sheltered environment and live like other kids. His father, a hard-drinking Irish bookmaker and tavern owner, understood the boy's need to prove himself. So during the summer of 1959 he pushed his son to attempt the impossible—pitching in a Little League game, boxing the neighborhood bully—while Tommy took risks that appalled even his dad. Sullivan, an actor, musician and motivational speaker, knows how to spin a captivating yarn, and his can-do enthusiasm leaps off the page as he writes of "the unlimited capacity of the human imagination." Readers may wonder, however, if his talent for storytelling exceeds his recall: are there too many hair-raising but ultimately successful adventures for one short summer? Though an inspiring motivational book, especially for young readers, this is not remotely about "Tom's reliance upon God," as Nelson's marketing copy indicates. About the Author
Tom Sullivan, known to many as an actor, singer, entertainer, author, and producer was born prematurely in 1947 and given too much oxygen while in an incubator. Though it saved his life, it cost him his eyesight. Tom spent the early part of his career pursuing music and eventually gained national prominence with appearances on The Tonight Show, a major recording contract, and a steady stream of gigs in Las Vegas. From there he would head to TV as a special correspondent for ABC’s Good Morning America while guest starring in Designing Women, Highway to Heaven, Fame, M.A.S.H, Mork & Mindy, and WKRP in Cincinnati. Tom has been nominated twice for Emmy Awards, is the only living recipient of the Helen Keller Lifetime Achievement Award, has spoken at over three thousand corporations and universities and has written nine books for children, youth, and adults.

Seeing Childhood

Tom Sullivan has "seen" more in a lifetime of accomplishments than anybody I know (come on: how many folks do you know who've played Augusta, run the Marine Corps marathon, appeared on Carson, sold out Vegas, built a blessed family life ... you get the point). It's a breathtaking record that blows away the boundaries most of us assume apply to the lives of the blind or people with similar physical challenges. Adventures in Darkness is the story of seemingly smaller successes - it tells of his pivotal 11th summer, when Sullivan's fierce desire to experience life as a "normie" led him into a series of adventures that make for hilarious, uplifting and deeply affecting reading.

Every child has felt alone, misunderstood and deeply conscious of not belonging. For most of us, it's a transitory part of growing up that hopefully leaves us with humility and empathy as character traits, and shallow enough scars that we're in no way disfigured. We know that the blind experience entirely another level of separation. We know, but with the mixture of embarrassment about our own good fortune and an unwillingness to delve into anything that might sadden us, too often we may hesitate to pick a story about someone who lives with a disability. So here's the good news about Adventures in Darkness: it's a tremendously fun read.

Sullivan's tale will feel familiar to every reader, but it's his storyteller's artistry that has you racing through the book, connected to the common smells, milestones and challenges of growing up, and to the special sense of how indomitable this particular human spirit was and is. What separates Adventures in Darkness from the "up from the bootstraps" mainstream is that it is a good story, well told and from an unexpected perspective. Sullivan is blind; he will make you see. You'll see his deeply loving and disastrously damaged parents; and most of all, you'll see a real kid. Tom Sullivan, as a boy and as a man, has a crushing disability ... and he deals with it. Being Blind is no excuse...

This book was such a pleasure. It strips off all your preconceived notions of what defines a handicap. Tom just wanted to be a "normie"; the term the blind children used to refer to sighted children. They longed to break from the prison that blindness placed on them through limitations and special schools. Tom Sullivan chose to be their "Moses". As Tom plots and plans adventures that most sighted children wouldn't have the courage to attempt, he learns about himself and overcomes fears that society has imposed on him. Soon, his feats become greater to the point of proving to his entire community that he has earned the right to respect and the opportunity to be included in sighted activities. One of his adventures include going three rounds in the ring with the town bully. I did leave out several other rather amusing antidotes His sense of humor is an added bonus. I promise, this is a book that will entertain as well as challenge you.
God Bless Tom Sullivan. In his epilogue, he shares that though legislation is in place to provide greater access for those with limitations, we as a society have really fallen short again and again to actually do so. Little has changed in the last 50 years, since he struggled for equality. Let us all make a resolution to be a more inclusive society!

Adventures in Darkness is a spectacular book that captures the mischief, struggles, and adventures of an 11 year old boy who happens to be blind. As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, I have a special interest in books by or about person that are blind or visually impaired. Such books provide heroes for my students and help me to keep perspective as a teacher. However, Tom Sullivan's "Adventures in Darkness" is almost certain to delight and intrigue any reader. From literally breaking out of school to boxing with a sighted bully, Tommy Sullivan takes on the sighted world and provides insight to the challenges he and his family faced during his childhood.
