Perfect Delivery

I first saw this calendar on the school campus book store when it was half off. 7 dollars, not bad for a wonderful calendar. However, I was embarressed to purchase this openly exotic item...so I went home empty handed instead. I searched amazon and to my suprise, someone was selling it! And what more? It was 4 dollars, even cheaper than what I saw in the store! It was a wonderful find and I immediantly bought it. Shipping was fast and packaging was under the utmost care. I know where I'll be getting my calendar next year!

still one of the best

After 30 years of its first publications, this book remains one of the best. It treats all the elements of a graduate course in analysis thoroughly. One of the few books that actually goes through construction of the real number system (in Chapter 1) and products of infinitely many measure spaces (in Chapter 6). There is plenty material to choose from, and all the standard topics are covered. In a very few cases notation is a bit cumbersome (or obsolete), but this is no big problem. Highly recommended to all graduate students in mathematics.

One of the best references on the subject

This is the kind of book I appreciate the most: one that's always got the information you need. This meticulous text covers thoroughly just every topic from elementary set theory up to product measures. It develops carefully all topics that should be included in standard analysis lectures (set theory, topology, Lebesgue integral, Banach and Hilbert spaces, differentiation, product measures) at such level of abstraction that the book turns out to be suitable for introductory courses, advanced courses, and later reference. The only one shortcoming I see is that the book includes no bibliography.

Excellent real analysis reference

In many applications today, such as PDE or harmonic analysis, it is crucial to have a really good grasp of the Lebesgue integral and absolutely continuous (rather than continuously differentiable) functions. Many real analysis books shy away from these matters.
Hewitt and Stromberg provide *every* detail, starting from scratch with measure theory, including Caratheodory's construction and fine distinctions such as Lebesgue vs. Lebesgue-Borel measurable sets. They proceed to discuss the Lebesgue integral in detail, then differentiation and absolutely continuous functions, the Lebesgue spaces including Riesz representation and a Banach space primer and finally integration on products (also infinite) of measure spaces. Fourier series and transforms are covered as well as fine details of (naive) set theory.
The book would be perfect if some standard analysis (Taylor series, analytic functions, Hospital rule, ...) was discussed; for this reason and because of its high level, it cannot be recommended as a book for 1st year calculus.

I cannot sing this book's praises enough. Prof. de Mattei has knocked it out of the ballpark with this book. He presents Pius IX as he ought to be presented--from within the context of his own times and in light of Catholic teaching.

Great Insight into Secret European Societies at work in mid 1800's to secularize Europe and specifically Italian Unification

The Catholic Church World View is discussed in this book and how and why it unsuccessfully opposed the secularization of Italy. Pius IX foresaw the de-humanization of individuals by secular elites who believed that centrally controlled government by "enlightened" rationalists was better for the common good than any other option. The book covers their masterful deception of the populous who are gullible enough buy into their vision. It also frankly exposes the Vatican's inability to counter their arguments in public. Pius IX foresaw the underlying fallacies and fatal flaws of political 'isms': Communism, Nazism, and to a more limited extent unbridled capitalism. For those seeking a greater knowledge of the Catholic World View recommend read Catholic Catechism, 2nd edition. It appears daunting, but for mind's trying to make sense of what the 1800's brought into the1900's and the continuation of secularism without an alternative rational, its worth the read.

Best Read in a Long Time!

A friend who manages a bookstore tried to turn me on to this offering two years ago and it took me this long to get around to reading it. Now I'm kicking myself for not doing so earlier. "Lamb" is alternately touching, funny, thought-provoking and even inspirational. In an era where so much of what is published (or self-published) is utter crap, it's good to know there are still a few authors taking the time to craft brilliant, enjoyable stories.

For the first time in a long time, I had a hard time putting a book down. This one cut into my sleep, but it was so worth it! I'm now reading another Moore book, "A Dirty Job," and I'm happy to report it also is excellent. I'm sure I'll be reading everything this author has in print within the next few months. One caveat, however: if you're a person with ... mmm ... something less than flexible religious convictions who's easily offended, you may want to give this one a miss. It's intended -- at least in part -- as parody, but I'm guessing not everyone is going to get the joke.

I do not write reviews, ever, but dear god, everyone needs to read this book. I've never felt so strongly about a novel before. Regardless of your religious belief's, this book is 10/10 for you. Lamb is one of those books that makes you think a little differently once you finish it and leaves you with one of the largest book hangovers of all time. In the name of all that is holy, read about Biff and Josh's adventures together. Please. Learn about the first draft of the Mt of Olives speech, how bunnies became associated with Easter, the things to look for when picking a harlot, and of course, how Josh became the Messiah he was to so many people. This book is everything.

I enjoy and look forward to reading the actual Bible now

As a Catholic I had some "hang ups" when I first read it. I even went as far to put it away and not read it anymore cause I was just SOOO sure I was right about things. I told the friend that recommended it to me that is was certainly NOT my cup of tea. He is not particularly spiritual or Christian. He told me this was the book that GOT him to read the whole bible. He laughed and cried through the whole book "Lamb" he said....So I put my "thoughts" on a shelf and read it. I laughed and I cried. I am heart broke the book is finished. The kind of heart broke that you feel when your favorites TV series has its last show of its last season and no more will be made EVER. How WILL you go on is how one feels. This book has gotten me to STUDY the bible more. When I come upon certain stories in the bible that were talked about in this book "Lamb", the stories Biff, Jesus childhood friend refers too, I laugh and remember Biffs spin on it cause he was supposedly there and he told it His way. It gives me the feeling of belonging that I feel I know something that no one else knows. I huger to read more of the bible now just to keep that feeling. Yes I know which is the real and which is from the book Lamb. I just like feeling of belonging now

An uplifting tale about a serious subject

One day as a young adolescent, while browsing at the library, I came across the book Miracle at Carville by Betty Martin. This book, which told the story of the author's diagnosis of leprosy in her 20's, also described the years she spent receiving treatment for this disease at a hospital in Carville, Georgia. Of the many books I have read since then, few have made as much of an impression on me as this title. When I learned about the sequel, I immediately rushed to borrow No One Must Ever Know and felt the same way about this title too. Recently I chanced upon the book Moloka'i by Alan Brennert and recognized the name of this area in Hawaii that was a former leprosy colony. I immediately had to read this book, and while no longer an impressionable adolescent as I once was, this book again filled me with compassion and love for the people who lived and suffered from this life threatening and alienating disease.
In the late 19th century surrounded by the beauty of the islands of Hawaii, 7 year old Rachel Kalma lives an idyllic live surrounded by family members who adore her. While her father travels the world for his job, Rachel listens attentively to her father's stories and hopes one day to see the places her father vividly describes to her. Although there are some in their area who contract leprosy and are removed from the surroundings like Rachel's uncle, nobody ever thinks this disease will affect Rachel. Then she begins to show signs of a lesion which doesn't' respond to any of he mother's ministrations or medicine from the doctors. Eventually the authorities receive word that Rachel may have this disease and when they investigate Rachel, her families fears confirmed, she must leave her family to live among other lepers. Separated from her family except for occasional visits by her father and the company of her afflicted uncle, Rachel must make a new life for herself surrounded by an unusual cast of loving people. Adversity strengthens her as she comes to know the kind sister who cares for her, a fellow leper who hides a dark secret and the love of a good man whom she marries and even becomes a mother. By the end of this book, we weep with Rachel as friends die and cheer for her when she is able to fulfill some of her dreams. But the best part for me was that these were no longer characters in a book but people who I considered good friends, so vividly were they portrayed by the author.
Told over six decades, Moloka'i tells the gripping story of adversity and the triumph of the human spirit. As I neared the end of the book I couldn't help but think of how we once viewed AIDS sufferers isolating them in many of the same way lepers were also once isolated. The author has written a compelling book and one worthy to take its place among other titles on this subject like Betty Martin's books and The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama.

Fifty Years on Molokai

This amazing story caught me up in the first few pages. We meet seven-year old Rachel Kalama, youngest child in her Honolulu family. When she is discovered to have a small leprous sore on her leg, Rachel is snatched from the bosom of her family and sent first to be "cured" in the Kahili hospital in Honolulu. After a year in Kahili, she is then sent to the Kalaupapa leper colony on Molokai. The story of Rachel and her new family on Molokai is beautiful, inspirational and very uplifting.

Character development is very strong in this story. The figure of Sister Catherine Voorhies was perhaps my favorite of the whole story, as she deals with her own personal demons as well as her own doubts of "Why does God give children leprosy?" This story is so wonderful as Rachel and her new-found 'ohana (family) rise above their disease and find dignity and love in their isolated home.

Simply one of the most moving and enjoyable books I've read in a very long time.

"Will anyone remember these girls, other than you and me?"

This gripping novel is based on the author's serious research into the history of the Kalaupapa colony for suffers of leprosy (Hansen's disease) on Moloka'i. Brennert focuses on the human tragedy, both of individual sufferers and of their families who, suffering guilt by association, were ostracized by their neighbors and employers. But he also emphasizes the personal triumphs of these patients, recognizing their dignity and celebrating their achievements. Though a leper colony can never be free from profound sadness, Brennert avoids turning this novel into a ten-hanky tearjerker, focusing instead on the lives the patients create for themselves and on their attempts at normalcy.
Rachel Kalama, the main character, is a typical 5-year-old growing up in a loving family in Honolulu when her mother first sees a sore on Rachel's leg which will not heal. Although she keeps Rachel's condition a secret for a year, Rachel is eventully seized by the health inspector, who receives a bounty for capturing her, and sent to a secure Honolulu hospital. A year later, she is sent to Kalaupapa, on Moloka'i, and her isolation--at the age of seven--is total. The "family" she develops in Kalaupapa, her friendships with other young children, and her refusal to let the disease (or any of the nuns) control her spirit make her life bearable, and the reader will admire her pluck even while dreading what her future holds.
Yet Rachel is one of those in whom the disease develops very slowly, and her story continues through her teen years, her marriage, and well beyond. Through her, Brennert shows the history of the settlement, the history of treatment for Hansen's disease, and the history of Hawaii itself, including the seizure of the Queen and the annexation and colonization of the islands by the American sugar barons (events which clearly parallel Rachel's story). Brennert enriches his novel by incorporating events described in real documents and journals into his story, from its lawless, "wild West" atmosphere at the outset, to its final development as a "home" for the people who live there. He memorializes many real people among the fictional characters, including Robert Louis Stevenson.
Though there is melodrama and sentimentality here, and Rachel's life at Kalaupapa may be more rosy-colored than it was in reality, the emotion flows naturally from the subject and the author's desire to present the full historical record. Few readers will remain unchanged by Rachel's story. As one character says, "How we choose to live with pain, injustice, or death...is the true measure of the Divine within us." Mary Whipple

When I ordered this book and looking at the price I was skeptical as to whether it would deliver the value it proposed. After reviewing and reading it is a great addition to Paul Gipe's book wind power. Paul Gipe's book goes into heavy reading and detail which is super, for for a summary book and helping fill in the gaps and present information to your employees and audiences in a simple real practical terms this book is a super and great asset. There are great pictures, tables and illustrations. Additionally, it is well written and easy to comprehend.

Grade 8 Up—In this practical and lively self-help title, the author argues that teens have six key decisions to make, and that their choices will make or break their futures. The decisions involve getting a good education, choosing true friends, getting along with parents, dating and sex, avoiding addictions, and establishing a healthy sense of self-worth. Covey provides tips for making and following through on each of these areas and delivers concise sound bites of advice peppered with colorful graphics, cartoons, and movie quotes. He supports his arguments with facts, statistics, and analysis. For example, in urging teens to stay in school and keep up their grades, he provides a chart of lifelong earnings based on the highest degree earned, as well as the money needed for a family. The author briefly addresses problems associated with the choices. For example, regarding school, he gives tips on dealing with stress, time management, learning disabilities, and preparing for college. He is frank in discussing sex and dating myths and the dangers of STDs and teenage pregnancy. This book covers typical self-help territory, but does so in a manner that teens will appreciate. Its downfall is its wide scope and the author's failure to cite most of his sources. Probably would have helped me when I was a teen

Covey packs the book with wisdom. His approach is wide in range and still has depth

- school
- friends
- parents
- dating and sex
- addiction
- self worth

He throws in a crash course on the 7 habits of highly effective teens as well as a list of his families favorite movies to boot.

I found this book when I was searching for wisdom to address the issue of porn which is being made so widely available to youngsters through the net, the cell phones and even the PSPs. My son was being exposed to it at school and becoming curious.

I wanted to find another voice to add to mine to wise up my son so that he can see that as a choice to avoid and understand the reasons to resist such a powerful allure. Well, Covey addresses that issue with wisdom. Reading that (small but informative) section prompted me to read the entire book (which I stayed up all night to accomplish) I highly recommend this book as an antidote to the "anything goes" and "everybody wins" cultural messages.

You will not be disappointed.

Great bonding opportunity

I read this book to my 10-year-old, and it helped me broach topics that I probably would have had a difficult time talking about and created opportunities for the two of us to bond that would have never happened otherwise. The book may broach topics that are too mature for some 10-year-olds (e.g., pornography, drugs, etc.), but I feel fortunate to have been the first to introduce these topics to my son. As we read the book, he sought me, asking specifically for me to read more of the book to him. It was clear that he was not only interested in the book, but he enjoyed the experience of us sharing the information. As a result, we were now able to talk about drugs, alcohol, sex, school, and numerous other topics because those topics are introduced in the book. One of the things that I appreciate most about the book is the fact that it not only provides recommendations about six important decisions that all teens will face, but it also provides numerous anecdotes and statistics in support of those recommendations.

Worried your teen needs extra guidance and do not know where to start! This is a great book. As a teach we used the Covey lessons in school and the students really took to it. Great way to have your teen open up and spend quality time with them.
