So much more than a camera manual!

I have been a fan of Gary's books for years. This is my forth and like all the others it's written in a highly readable and easy to follow format. Everything is well documented and there are loads of examples. This book is SO much more than a how to use the camera manual! A full-color downloadable version for much less is available on Gary's website. Google "RX-100 Friedman."

There are better, less expensive choices. This book while it had relevant information was very cheaply printed using cheap paper and illustrations were monochrome, often had banding and frequently difficult to see. Should have been 1/2 the price .

Gold mine of practical information - clear, concise, and detailed

Extremely helpful for any user of a Sony RX-100. This is not some fluffed out "RX-100 Guide for Dummies", but instead a book where the deeper you study it, the more you will learn. The scope of the information and the orderly way it is presented makes for an excellent learning resource. Gary's writing style is informative, to the point, and his extensive real world experience with the RX-100 is readily apparent.

I bought the RX-100 as a compact travel and walk-about camera for those occasions where I didn't want to lug my Canon DSLR and multiple lenses along with me. The RX-100 is easy to get up and running in basic modes. However the detailed knowledge I've gained through Gary's book has been an eye-opener in understanding the versatility of this camera, allowing me to use it in its fullest capacities.

But the physical properties of the book are lacking. Cheap paper, muddy B&W photos instead of color, very disappointing to me. I gleaned much knowledge from the text, but the book's overall usefulness would have been significantly improved by having sharp color photos.

Now for the good. Any purchaser can simply contact Gary through his website and with proof of purchase, get sent a PDF of the book at no cost. Being able to read the book on your monitor in full color makes a world of difference.

Important study of the early Anglo-Norman upper class

Four themes dominated the life of the medieval nobleman: warfare, politics, land, and family. All these made up English political society, not just for the great dukes and earls but also for the lesser peers and the gentry who formed the power base in the counties. The author thoroughly examines the English social structure, discussing what contemporaries meant when they talked of the nobility and analyzing in detail the territorial and familial policies of the great landholders. For instance, although William the Conqueror did not, as a matter of policy, dispossess the Anglo-Saxon nobility, that is, in fact, what had happened by the time of Domesday Book, twenty years later. By 1086, there were, at the top of society, about 170 great tenants-in-chief, men who held their land directly from the king, and enough of it to be described as barons. All but two of these men were Norman (or Breton, or Fleming). Among them, these 170 controlled about half the land of England. Another seventeen percent of the land was retained by William as his own demesne, and another quarter of the land was granted to the Church. The remaining eight percent was divided among all the other lesser tenants-in-chief and the minor royal officials. But even so, there were immense differences at the top, with Robert, count of Mortain (the king's brother), controlling a hundred times as much territory and income as, say, Robert of Aumale. In fact, about one-quarter of England was in the hands of ten men: Robert of Mortain, Odo of Bayeux (the king's other brother), William FitzOsbern, Roger de Montgomery, William de Warenne, Hugh d'Avranches, Eustace of Boulogne, Richard de Clare, Geoffrey of Coutances, and Geoffrey de Mandeville.

Given-Wilson also probes the surprising fact that no really great noble dynasts emerged in England during the 12th century -- a family that might compare in wealth and status with the great peers of France or the dukes and margraves of Germany. (It was mostly a combination of geographical dispersion of landholdings and much greater social fluidity than that of the 14th century.) The author is also careful to provide examples of his points from a large number of noble families of interest to the genealogist. The historical maps detailing the manor holdings of the Nevils, Berkeleys, Clares, Montagues, Beauchamps, Percys, Cliffords, Fitzalans, Mowbrays, and Beauforts are enlightening and the notes and bibliography are very extensive.

Opening the Family Cottage

The family cottage in Surface Rights is as much a character as any of the other eccentric and always interesting characters populating this instantly engaging northern Ontario story.

Verna sets off on a sad and solitary mission to her multi-generation family cottage near the fictional town of Greater Gammage near Timmins, Ontario. Travelling with her are the “cremains” of her twin sister, father, and ex-husband, and her father’s dog Jude, a very much alive Labrador retriever. Loaded down with family baggage, yet seemingly without a family, Verna must spread the ashes and prepare the cottage for sale.

So much for aloneness, and for sadness, when she meets kind-hearted, wise and very large Carmen, the cottage real estate agent. In typical small-town fashion, Carmen notifies others that Verna, a member of the Macoun clan, is in the area, and this gets the ball rolling. Winonah, a First Nations handywoman, pays a visit during one of Verna’s blistering hangovers, and brings along her brother, who isn’t all there - turns out, he’s a ghost. The cottage begins to swell with visitors, human, or ghostly, and sometimes unwanted - it becomes a magnet for damaged and suffering souls.

At the heart of the story are the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of Fern, Verna’s twin sister, and the unconventional, feckless life leading to it. Fern's three children, all from different fathers and living apart, arrive, and we learn the details of their complicated childhoods.

Verna faces hard truths about her relationship with her sister, her husband, and her propensity for booze. But for all the seriousness, Surface Rights is darkly funny, and fuelled by this unlikely group of characters and their crackling dialogue, the story sweeps along with surprises, humour and insight into complicated and very real human relationships.

The cottage in Surface Rights burgeons with family life, in all its complexity - sad, funny, ugly, terrifying, crazy, but ultimately filled with love.

Easy, entertaining, amusing read

Surface Rights has many of the elements that I look for when purchasing a book: a strong female lead, a cast of weird and wonderful supporting characters, and a story line (plus a couple of engaging subplots) that kept me guessing until the end. A bonus was the setting, a rundown family cottage in the wilderness, so dear and familiar to Canadian hearts. This is the type of novel to read beside a cozy fireplace, or dangling your feet off the pier in front of your own cottage.

Funny and odd and touching.

This is a beguiling novel, rich in character and with a deep vein of humor running throughout. It also becomes increasingly involving, as a story that begins with one lonely and despondent woman (and a dog) gradually widens its cast of characters to include a reunited family, some Native Americans, and a ghost or two.

About the Author

Dr. George K. Kostopoulos is a faculty member at the University of Maryland University College, where he serves and teaches as a faculty mentor in the master’s degree programs in cybersecurity and information assurance. Dr. Kostopoulos has an extensive international academic career, having taught in seventeen universities around the world, including Boston University, Texas A&M International University, Florida Atlantic University, the University of Heidelberg (Germany), and the American University of Sharjah (UAE). He is the author of numerous scholarly papers and two other books, Digital Engineering and Greece and the European Economic Community. Dr. Kostopoulos received his master’s and PhD degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the Arizona State University, and a master’s in economics from California State Polytechnic University. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cybersecurity and Information Assurance and a reviewer of numerous scientific conferences.

A must-read for cybersecurity professionals

Dr. Kostopoulos' book was a wonderful read on Cybersecurity and it should be on the bookshelf of EVERY current or aspiring security professional. There is such a vast amount of information available in the text, everything from wireless security and secure information systems to the soft science considerations of creating a culture of security. Material that is not typically included in other cybersecurity texts, such as the guidelines for development as a CIO, was included and was very insightful. The material is presented in a very easily understood manner, and is appropriate even for a non-technical reader. The author has done a wonderful job of breaking down technical concepts that could lead to organizational vulnerabilities and explains them in an easy to understand manner. I found it helpful that there were exercises included to reinforce knowledge. This is a book that could not have been published at a more critical time. I will certainly be keeping this book right beside my desk for future use and will be recommending it to everyone in my professional circle.

Toronto-based comedian Sankey may not be a household name, but his how-to book is a worthy complement to Judy Carter's Stand-Up Comedy: The Book (Dell, 1989) and far better than Richard Belzer's slight How To Be a Stand-Up Comic (Citadel, 1992). While Carter offers more specific advice on joke writing to beginners, Sankey provides more depth, musing helpfully on writing, delivery, set structure, and more. He may be right to advise that naturally funny people can learn to do stand-up, but Sankey could say more about the daunting hurdles to latter-day professional success. His Zen references are judiciously sparse, and his conclusion that stand-up comics can learn from Zen about being "in the moment" and staying loose on stage rings true. The Best Book on Stand-up

I've read a lot of bad books on stand-up comedy, all of them except this one. This is the only good one I've read. After I read this, I did stand-up for the first time at a bar for 30 people. The next week I was in the Comedy Central/Miller Lite Lite 'n Up competition at Comedy Works in Denver for a packed house each time I performed. Out of 100 people, and over the course of 2 months of performing, I got third place. Since then I've moved to Chicago and got booked at Zanie's. A lot of that had to do with the book. It cuts through to the chase.

Brilliant - like no other comedy writing book out there!

I collect humorous stories - sales blunders, actually. So I wanted a book that would help me as a professional speaker to be as funny as possible. Speakers, like comedians, get paid more when their audience laughs more.
So I began buying all the comedy writing books and most are pretty good. Buy Jay's is first of all, hilariously funny (bonus!) and second, more insightful than anything else. He discusses the psychology of the performer and the audience. He has little, interesting, no - fascinating details I found nowhere else.
Funny cartoons, creativity galore, inspiration and encouragement for anyone dipping into comedy or getting a dunking in it.
Best book on the block on this topic!

a workbook

If you are curious about what makes things funny and how to get laughs, this book breaks it down. It is geared towards people breaking into the world of stand-up comedy, and even if you don't intend on making a career out of it, you can still learn a lot about being funny. If you want to be a stand-up comedian, this book is for you. If you are inclined to write, I suggest picking up a copy of The Comic Toolbox by Vorhaus.
