Good story, but moved a little too fast

White Sleeper, written by David R. Fett, Stephen Langford, is a lightening-fast-paced story about two characters trying to stop a homegrown terrorist from unleashing a deadly virus on American citizens. Doctor Dave Richards was once a fast-rising star, solving cases that no one else could figure out. Known for finding the things that hide in plain site, his rise to the top came at a price- he developed a serious drinking problem and found himself catapulted to the bottom of the food chain and banished to the basement. Not even his best friend, Dr. Root, can save him. Agent Paula Mushari is an FBI agent who dreams of working counter-terrorism, but wonders if her ethnicity is holding her back in a country where all those of Muslim backgrounds are viewed with suspicion. Together, they unravel a plot to unleash a rare virus on unsuspecting American citizens, perpetuated by a white supremacist bent on revenge since the government killed his parents during an FBI raid.

The story moves extremely fast, a little too fast at times. At only 272 pages (in the ARC), I feel that the authors had plenty of time to slow down just a little bit and flesh out a few sections. The book starts out with the rain on Ben Curran's parent's house, jumps forward to the highlight of Richards' career, then leaps forward to almost present day, then one more time a few months later to actual "present day." This is a purely action-driven story, character development is limited to the two main players, and even then we only see glimpses of who they are and how they got to this particular point in their lives. I personally prefer a little heavier hand on the character back-stories, but I'll let it slide. Those who are looking for a straight-forward action story about deadly viruses (one of my favorite subjects) won't be disappointed.

PROS- First, I really like that, aside from the brief run-in with the plague, the viruses in the book aren't your typical fare. In my opinion, botulism and rabies (I wont tell you which of the three is the big bad of the book, I don't want to ruin anything) don't get nearly enough play these days. Second, Agent Mushari is a delight. She could be bitter and grumpy about the fact that she's stuck in the middle of nowhere because the upper echelon of the government is too scared to allow an Arab woman any sort of real power- but she's not. She's also not one of those fictional FBI types that is always shoving her title or jurisdiction in other people's faces. She's kind, considerate and helpful. Richards is also a likable character who cares more about saving lives than he does about saving his career. They make a good team.

CONS- While I found the pace a little fast, I'm not counting that as a con because many people enjoy that. My only real complaint is that occasionally the writing read a little too much like a screenplay. Stephen Langford is a screenwriter, so that may account this issue. A few scenes, like in the room at the hotel, seemed to be set up as though it was written in a way that would translate better to television than into the mind of the fiction reader. It's not blatantly obvious and doesn't detract from the overall story, but it did pull me out at moments. Again, a lot of this has to do with personal preferences, I like to a have enough information to form a full picture of the setting in my mind.

OVERALL- I enjoyed the story very much, although I do wish it was just a little longer and a little more fleshed out in some spots.

Interesting Concept but Poor Execution

Dr. David Richards is a brilliant but flawed doctor. He is capable of insightful diagnoses of his patient's maladies, but he often celebrates his discoveries with drinking binges. His problems with alcohol have severely impacted his career to the point where he is clinging to a low profile job in the Center for Disease Control. Through an unexpected turn of events Dr. Richards is thrust into the middle of bio-terrorism scale that could leave millions of American dead. Teaming with a beautiful FBI agent Dr. Richards needs to find the source of the threat and keep it from being released.

Sound interesting... well it is interesting, the issue is that while White Sleeper has a strong concept it suffers from mediocre writing. There are numerous instances of poor/contrived dialogue that really knock the reader out of the story and make you question the author's use of words.

Another issue is the pacing of "White Sleeper" - it is rare to say that a book is too short or that it paced too quickly, but that is case with "White Sleeper". The book moves at such a pace that most of the characters are very one-dimensional (which adds to the contrived dialogue). It really felt like there was additional layers of story that was not being told. The stories climax occurs over about a 10 pages which (again) feels very rushed. Finally, the book ends with a bit of romantic awkwardness (are the authors planning a sequel?) that seems to leave a few threads hanging.

Final Verdict- I don't mean to be overly harsh, in truth "White Sleeper" would make a nice pool-side read. The plot was clearly developed under the careful eye of a practicing physician. It is just unfortunate because with the oversight of an experienced editor, "White Sleeper" could have gone from "Mediocre" to "Special".

Exciting medical thriller!

I really enjoyed this taut suspense tale with a great medical mystery and undercover excitement. I learned a lot about diseases and how vulnerable we might be to sabotage and attack. Loved the sexy vulnerable doctor who must rise to an extraordinary challenge. Highly recommended.

Great book

This dissertation covers some very nuanced issues regarding Kant's theoretical philosophy, primarily the issue of realities, which Warren interprets to be causal powers. Very clear exposition, I think for anyone pursuing a more detailed understanding of Kantian metaphysics, this book is a must study.

Useful to understand multivariable control and robustness

This is a very comprehensive book on multivariable control, particularly chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9 wich are very useful to people who want to understand robustness and are interested in studying these topics by themselves. It was of great help to me.

Excellent Book for Graduate Students and researchers

This is a excellent book for graduate student working in Control. It starts of with concepts in control and gradually goes into the details of multivariable control. Presentation on $\mu$ is clear and concise. I really liked the material on decentralzed control and control structure selection. Prof. Siguard Skogestad and Prof. Ian Postlethwaite did a excellent job. However, I wish there were more problems at the end of each chapter focussing on the research issues.

Good content, but terrible quality printing

This is not a review of the content of the book (which is excellent) but the quality of the product.

I purchased the paperbook version, and the print quality was appalling. It looks like it has been printed on the lowest quality setting of a cheap laser printer from a highly-compressed JPEG. The text is gray and has all sorts of artifacts around it that make it very difficult to read. I'm not sure if this is just my copy or the whole batch, I will be trying to get it replaced.

About the Author
Joe McNally is an internationally acclaimed photographer, whose career has spanned 30 years and included assignments in over 50 countries. In the mid-1990s Joe served as Life magazine's staff photographer, the first one in 23 years. He is a recipient of the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award and has been honored by Pictures of the Year International, World Press Photo, The Art Directors Club, American Photo, Communication Arts, and Graphis. He conducts numerous workshops around the world as part of his teaching activities. One of Joe's most notable projects, Faces of Ground Zero - Giant Polaroid Collection (which he later published with the editors of LIFE), has become known as one of the most significant artistic responses to the tragedy at the World Trade Center.

Educational and Inspirational

Finally, a book that puts it all together. Over the years, in my never-ending quest to snap a decent picture, I have purchased literally hundreds of books on photography. Generally speaking, these books have been a disappointment; I've always felt that there's one crucial step that I've either missed, not understood, or the author has left out. Many of my 'How-To' photography books remain half read, put down in frustration because I just don't get the concept.

In other words, those books made me feel dumb. This book doesn't.

McNally has an incredibly easy-to-read style, explaining everything from how to turn the camera on to the most advanced techniques in a very down-to-earth manner. Concepts are explained in detail, but without technical jargon. The book is also beautifully illustrated with fantastic photos that illustrate each concept perfectly. A small caption under each photo explains the F-stop, shutter speed and ISO used, which I found very helpful. The "Everything You Need To Shoot Like The Pros" part of the title is extremely accurate.

For fledgling photographers, avid hobbyists and aspiring pros, this book is an indispensable resource.

Good general review of photography basics, but primarily a showcase for McNally

Photographers are easy marks for "how-to" books on photography. We're never happy with our work. We always wish we had brought a different camera, a different lens, the heavy tripod instead of the light one and so on. In short, serious photographers are never happy with their own work and are always eager to learn more, to learn the secrets of getting that just right combination to create the perfect photo - each and every time we press the shutter.

It will never happen, of course. Which means photo book publishers will never go out of business. With more than fifty years of serious photography experience, I still get the occasional book even though I know better.

The "LIFE Guide to Digital Photography: Everything You Need to Shoot Like the Pros" is, frankly, just another how-to book.

It covers the basics of photography, with a focus on Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras. The basics of haven't really changed since the dominance of film. Joe McNally, who is an excellent photographer, explains (in general terms) the nature of light, the lens, design elements (fuzzy), color, composition and a collection entitled "Joe's Tips". I found this last section to be the most interesting because of its exposition on techniques for hand held slow-speed shots.

Joe McNally tends to be a "it's all about me" writer, recounting his experience at this and that shoot. It isn't annoying, but it does get boring.

Profusely illustrated with McNally's work, the photos are great to look at, but for the most of no value as teaching aids. How many of us will be flying in helicopters we direct in order to capture aerial shots of Manhattan or a field of wind turbines? Who among us will be flying in a U.S.. Air Force T-38 with a whole hour to direct a B-2 Stealth bomber just so he can take pictures of it? (By the way, the shot of the B-2 printed in the book is unbelievably stunning. McNally truly has an eye.)

Many of the photos are of can't miss subjects. Anyone with a basic knowledge of exposure and composition and the willingness to sit through the day, will capture beautiful images of place like Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon and other scenic locations.

The level of the advice is aimed toward the not entirely inexperienced amateur. If you've been shooting with a DSLR for any length of time, you most likely know what is in this book.

So, is this a bad book? No. Not at all. It is a book filled with beautiful photographs taken by Joe McNally, most of which his readers stand no chance of duplicating. Likewise, if you pay attention to the focal lengths of all the lenses used, most readers will recognize that they can't afford all these optics and wouldn't be able to carry them all.

In short, this is a book about professional photographer's many assignment and how he accomplished them with an occasional aside for less experienced photographers. It is a gorgeous book, but not the most helpful book on mastering photography you could find.

Amazing photography with insights on how to improve your own

Joe McNally (the author) creates captivating images, photos that make you think "How did he do that?" Reading this book is like spending time with him. While yes, he gives you basic instruction such as an introduction to the exposure triangle of ISO, f-stop and shutter speed, he is sharing his fabulous art with you at the same time discussing some technical aspects such as lens, focus, color, timing or aperture that contributed to the final product. While he recommends always shooting in Raw so you can correct a photo, he is definitely a "Get it right in camera" guy. Below are summaries of a few of my favorite sections. Which is hard, because I loved them all.

The Almost Silhouette
In this example he has a photo of a young girl in a dark room looking out a lighted window. Which is a tough exposure situation. Expose for the highlights on her face. If you expose for the window other areas go totally black, if you expose for the dark shadows, others go nuclear. Look for a middle ground. (The photo example helps quite a bit.)

Fireworks
Shooting fireworks with a wide open lens will drain the color, it is quite easy to over expose them. An aperture of f/8 is a good start. Use a cable release, because the shutter will be open 4 to 15 seconds. The foreground object (the anchor) can determine the shutter speed. Don't shoot all night long with the same exposure (This goes for any situation).

Flash
This author is a Master at flash and makes the point that if you intend to take a lot of pictures, you will eventually have to shoot some with a flash, probably more with than without. Light, no matter where it comes from has quality, color and direction. All three of those things are important in the light that is already present and in the light that you add with a flash.
Moving the light off camera is essential. He shows examples of a pop-up on camera flash, a hot shoe flash, a hot shoe flash that is connected by wire and is off camera in studio, same situation in studio further away from the wall, and finally hot shoe, off camera, subject away from the wall and light bounced off (a neutral colored) ceiling. The final shot was lovely, the first, not so much.

Portraits and DOF
In this section McNally points out that every button and dial affect your photograph. Yes, you can let the camera decide for you, but do you really want an average vanilla photo? In this example he has a lovely photo of a Hawaiian dancer posed in front of a waterfall. Everything is crystal clear. I thought it was great until I turned the page, then, Wow! Now this is what we're talkin' bout! Same dancer, same waterfall, but she's in the water, he's up close (lens wise) and dropped his f-stop from 14 to 2. It is gorgeous! The leaves on the wreath she is wearing are blurry in front because of the narrow DOF (depth of field). It is spectacular, and communicates his message perfectly.

These a just a couple of the diamonds forged from years of being in the pressure cooker. If you love this book as much as I did you will also want to read The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes which is a hysterical and incredibly educational book about using speedlights (hotshoe flashs) to improve your photography. I also enjoyed The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world's top shooters another classic McNally book, but with a few more photos that were shot on film. They are still great examples that are relevant to the digital era, and you will no doubt learn things from this fabulous book.

Yet another GOOD one from Mr. Gimenez

Mark Gimenez is easily one of the quietest authors out there. He doesn't have a FaceBook, Twitter, and his website is pretty regular. I've eMailed him a few times and he has graciously responded, but he's not a "talker". So that's why I was surprised to see that he had a "new" book out... and it's been out since November. Whhaaaatttt!?!?! I go after books like I buy iPhone apps; 100 pure impulse I usually buy what I don't need. The difference here is that I NEED to read Mark. Every author after a while usually puts out a book that is good but not great. After six books, Mark has yet to do so.

This man is one hell of a magnificent writer!

And this is one hell of a book!

Let me address one thing first before I get to this book... there is a review on here that isn't entirely true. While I will admit that this book is HEAVILY political (especially in the beginning), but a "liberal political diatribe about the evils of the establishment and the wonders of illegal immigration" it is not. I don't know where Mark's politics lie (and I really don't care) but I don't think it's possible to tell with this book. Oh you can speculate, but I would expect that you would only see it through your eyes. If you're a Conservative then you will see the hero in Governor Bode. If you're a Liberal then you'll see Governor Bode as the devil himself. If you're a booklover then you'll put all that ish aside and just thoroughly enjoy another book from Mr. Gimenez.

`The Governor's Wife' is a very, very, very, very good read. Bode Bonner is the governor of Texas and proud of it. (Come to think of it, have you ever met anyone who was from Texas and wasn't proud of it?) Anywho... he has the thankless job of having to deal with illegal immigration, drug running, re-election, hoping against all hope that his dream of running for President will somehow come to fruition, and keeping time with one extremely hot assistant. If Edward Lorenz thought that little butterfly did something, he needs to jump ahead in time to see what happens on John Ed's ranch. What happens there will infuriate some people, make some people cheer, and others (like me) wonder how long it will take before it hits the fan.

So Bode's dream of running for President becomes a reality... overnight. And he would be a shoe-in except for a few things: 1. the incident at the ranch 2. His wife 3. His extremely hot assistant 4. El Diabolo. Other than that it would be a breeze. Mark has always had the ability to write a complex plot with his stories, but he ratchets it up a notch with this book. You wonder how a poor doctor, Super PAC's, illegal immigration, assassins, toned co-ed butts (have mercy), and Irish wives can possible come together to create a story that makes sense. Well, Mark did and it does.

And still... for the life of me I don't know why the American publishers don't pick up this guy! I am glad to see that his books are available in e-format but I would love to carry his work (other than his first two books) in my bookstore. Getting excited about an author is par for the course when you love books, but STAYING excited about an author is what makes reading so much fun.

A terrific Texas political thriller

I have read alll of Mark Gimenez's books, and have not been disappointed in one yet. His latest, The Governor's Wife, continues his streak of winners. As Gimenez's readers have come to expect, he pays close attention to setting the stage, bringing the story's locations alive. He develops the characters skillfully and draws the reader along, revealing just enough at just the right times, giving us people and a story to care about.

The governor in The Governor's Wife, Bode Bonner, bears an uncanny resemblance to our real life "governor for life," down to his connection to George W. Bush and his penchant for hunting small game while jogging (in self-defense, of course). There are plenty of biographical differences to avoid a defamation suit, but the personality is certainly inspired by Perry. (By the way, I couldn't help feeling like Gimenez is no fan of Gov. Perry!) While he is trying to figure out how to get noticed on the national stage, looking to follow in GWB's footsteps, his wife is bored and neglected, aware of Bonner's affair with his aide, and seeking meaning outside of photo ops and the public eye.

She finds satisfaction in assisting a doctor in the colonias along the border. Her training as a nurse and her compassionate spirit fit right in with the saintly doctor, who was born in the colonia, went to Harvard Medical School, and returned to the border to provide health care. She happens to assist in saving the life of the son of Mexican drug lord, then her husband happens to shoot the same son, leading the governor to the national stage he has longed for. At the same time, the Democratic party leadership think they've found the perfect candidate to oppose Bonner in the race for governor, a certain border doctor who happens to be falling in love with the governor's wife.

Gimenez weaves these connections into a believable, readable story, with, yes, some melodrama, but, hey, it's fiction! Throughout we're also treated to more political and social commentary than I remember in Gimenez's other books. Gimenez is pretty clearly a Democrat, but he gives enough time to the characters that other perspectives are treated fairly. I especially liked the Mexican perspective. As he conveyed the history of Texas and Mexico from the perspective of the Mexicans, he almost had me convinced that we should cede Texas back to Mexico. OK, not really, but it's interesting to hear their side of the story, too.

All in all, The Governor's Wife is a highly enjoyable, can't-put-it-down thriller. Highly recommended!

A political thriller - not as good as his other books

Mark Gimenez is a talented author and I have really enjoyed his other legally targeted books. This book is more a political thriller, and IMHO not a very good or believable one.

There is great theatre in political thrillers set in the U.S. because the political and constitutional system is so complex and flawed that it allows authors a wide range of creativity. This time I think that Gimenez has gone too far with this creativity. While I am Australian, I closely follow U.S. politics because of the impact the US on the rest of the world, especially over the last very crucial 4 years.

The main character is a larger than life Republican Texas Governor with the ethics and morals of a tom cat, whose testosterone drives him to govern Texas like a cowboy from the Wild West. His political excesses and lies force his wife to move out of the Governor's mansion to make her mark on the world. She goes to work as a nurse on the border with Mexico where abject poverty goes side by side with the wealth and cruelty of the local drug cartel.

When hunting wildlife on a Texas billionaire's private ranch, the Governor's philosophy is expressed clearly - "Shit, let's kill something, see if that'll perk up our spirits." In the end he doesn't kill any game but instead kills 4 Mexicans youths tending a hidden cannabis plantation on the ranch who are about to rape a young Mexican girl. One of the youths is the son of the head of the drug cartel, who vows to kill the Governor in revenge.

Overnight, because of his actions, the Governor becomes a national hero and starts to believe that God has ordained that he could be the next President of the USA. His philosophy is "Buying control of the U.S. government is man's work, like coaching football and destroying the economy". During fundraising for PAC money for a Presidential campaign, a billionaire donor wants to know what he can get for his money - "I want to have sex with my mistress in the Governor's Mansion in the same bed Sam Houston slept in."

I am not questioning the politics involved (others who live in the U.S. are more qualified to do that), only the credibility and believability of the characters and the plot. It was very hard to rate this book. The writing put it near the 4 star level, but the story and crediblity put it at 2 star or below. Because of my respect for Mark Giminez as an author, I compromised at 3 stars.

Todd A. Wilson (PhD, University of Cambridge) is the Senior Pastor of Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park, Illinois and the chairman and co-founder of the Center for Pastor Theologians, a ministry dedicated to resourcing pastors engaged in biblical and theological scholarship. He is the author of Galatians: Gospel-Rooted Living and Pastors in the Classics. Todd is married to Katie, his high school sweetheart, and they have seven children, three biological and four adopted from Ethiopia.

An Essential Book for the Church Today

Real Christian is written in response to a major problem in the church today: there are many who claim to follow Christ but show little evidence of a transformed life. Drawing on Jonathan Edwards’ Religious Affections, Todd shows us the meaning of authentic faith in Christ. He shows us that real Christianity is something you can see. That is, if we are truly following Christ there will be actual evidence in our lives and behavior. Further, this evidence consists not of the avoidance ethic or adherence to external regulations that put on a “show” of super-spirituality, but rather in Christ-like character.

Specifically, the evidence of real, authentic faith lies in five key qualities: “broken-hearted joy, a humble disposition, a readiness to acknowledge sin, an ability to live balanced and avoid legalism, and a deep spiritual hunger that drives growth.” Further, “all of these qualities culminate in the single defining mark of a real Christian — love.”

This is a very important message for the church today. Here’s what I say in my endorsement: "Todd Wilson’s Real Christian is exactly the book we need at this moment. I mean it when I say Real Christian can help the church recapture its mission and have the impact God wants it to have. I see Real Christian, in part, as a continuation of a book like Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life or even David Platt’s Radical. Both of those books call us to live out our faith on mission with God by radically pursuing the good of others, especially in global missions. But there is something that needs to be even prior to that in our Christian lives — namely, the cultivation of godly, Christ-like character. Todd’s book shows us what that character looks like. This is a message that is urgently needed, and is the foundation for everything else we do.

Todd’s book is also super well written and a joy to read. It gives competent, biblical direction on the nature of true Christianity that is crucial for all of us to know and apply as we follow Christ. I highly recommend it.

Excellent Reminder of What it Means to be an Authentic Believer

What does it really mean to be a true Christian? Are there observable traits that identify the real Christian from the fake, marks that clearly demonstrate one is really a follower of Jesus vice one who merely pays lip service? The answer to those questions is a resounding yes and Todd Wilson, in his helpful book Real Christian: Bearing the Marks of Authentic Faith, explains for the reader precisely what being a real Christian is about.

Wilson begins by defining the term real. This is important given unless one grasps what the real version looks like, the fake will be that much more difficult to spot. He rightly notes “Real Christians bear the marks of authentic faith in ways that can be seen, heard, and felt.” This means real Christianity involves more than simply saying you are a Christian. It demands action that is observable by others and that impacts the world around you for the glory of God.

There is a process of moving towards a place of real faith. Wilson aptly explains the first steps toward authenticity begin with a change of one’s heart. He comments, “A transformed heart is what gives rise to all the marks of real – from humility to hunger. And nothing else but a new heart can do this.” This statement dives right to the heart (no pun intended) of what it means to be born again. As born again believers, we have a new perspective on life, a new way of living, one oriented on loving God and loving others.

One particular chapter I appreciated in this fine book is Wilson’s discussion of what it means to hunger after God. This is another term we have all likely heard many times and even declared for ourselves as something we desire. A mark of a real Christian is evidence of hungering and thirsting after righteousness – the things of God and God Himself. Wilson rightly avers concerning what a hunger for God looks like in practice that “When it is fed, spiritual hunger doesn’t go away; it grows…Make it your ambition, then, to feed on God as much as possible.” As we seek after God, we are told we will find Him. When we find Him, we will desire more of His presence. More of His presence means more of Him in our lives which in turn will reflect godliness in our lives that others can clearly see.

Another helpful aspect of this book are the chapter resources provided at the conclusion of each chapter. Wilson provides the reader with questions for reflection that will assist in digging deeper into the material covered in that particular chapter. Additionally, he provides several passages of Scripture for further study as well as excellent resources. These chapter resources make this book of great value for not only personal study, but also for use in a small group environment or a family Bible study setting.

To be a true believer is to be a real Christian. Authenticity in a world replete with fake spirituality is more important than ever. I highly recommend this book for all believers all along the spectrum from the babe in Christ to the most seasoned in the faith. We all need a reminder that faith without works is dead faith. Wilson does an excellent job of encouraging the reader to seek after God so that He may be glorified in our lives and so that we may show a lost and hurting world the joy of serving our loving and gracious God.

Authenticity is a heart craving of post-modernism, and disingenuous efforts to produce it are swiftly sniffed out by others. I like how Todd Wilson puts this: “Nobody likes a fake. Even in our airbrush culture, we despise counterfeits and crave authenticity. Everyone wants to be real. But what does it mean to be real? No one really knows.” (17).

The Church is not without excuse. In evangelical statistics, we hear about self-professing nominal Christians, practical deists by all means. This self-identifying group continues to drop out of the Church and join the burgeoning contingent of religious nones. Lines are becoming statistically clear, yet individuals are just as confused as ever on where they lie on the spectrum of belief.

That’s where Todd Wilson steps in. Wilson has a PhD from Cambridge, cofounds and chairs The Center for Pastor-Theologians, and pastors Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park, Illinois. With years of shepherding under his belt, he’s seen the spiritual confusion many experience and offers a guide to help diagnose what a real Christian looks like. According to Wilson, “Real is something you can see. There is a visible difference between real and not-real Christians. It’s not enough to say you’re real; you should be able to see you’re real” (19).

This book, Real Christian, is first and foremost a spiritual diagnostic. Inspired by numerous readings of Jonathan Edward’s classic treatise, Religious Affections, Wilson follows Edward’s structure in Real Christian by presenting six marks of real Christians: humility (chpt. 3), meekness (chpt. 4), contrition (chpt. 5), wholeness (chpt. 6), hunger (chpt. 7), and perfected love (chpt. 8). Readers sit alongside the good Dr. Wilson, who diagnoses their hearts because, as he asserts, “A transformed heart is what gives rise to all the marks of real – from humility to hunger. And nothing else but a new heart can do this” (35).

Benefit for Pastoral Ministry

This book isn’t so much about a pressing issue in the church – though, true enough, diagnosing authentic faith is a challenge today – as it is about spiritual formation. Wilson is not banging a large pot with a metal spoon over his head crying, “You’re not real Christians!” If that image comes to mind, cast it aside. Real Christian offers a portrait of real faith: life-changing, influential faith that points to Christ. This kind of faith is a lasting faith – one that overcomes every threat – for as Wilson points out about real Christians: “They hold on to the faith tenaciously” (174).

Don’t let Wilson’s PhD credentials fool you into believing Real Christian is a stuffy, labyrinthine, academic tome. The writing is surely elegant, but more importantly, it is reader-friendly. Wilson’s use of anecdote aids readers to both connect to the author in winsome fashion and effectually grip each mark of real Christians.

For instance, chapter three’s explanation of humility kicks off with a story from Wilson’s academic days at Cambridge. Upon completing his studies, he attended a gathering where a rather “quintessentially British gentleman” asked him how he would use his degree. After hearing that Wilson would pastor in America, the gentlemen commented that this role was anticlimactic for a Cambridge man.

Here’s how Wilson processed this response:

“I was like a drowning man groping for a life preserver, clinging to the prerogatives and prestige of my Cambridge PhD. I watched as it slipped away, leaving me to sink under the weight of my own vanity and pride. It was a humbling experience, and it didn’t feel all that good.” (55)

I think we all relate to this sentiment. Yet, as Wilson explains, a self-deprecating, Mr. Milquetoast attitude is not true humility. Humility is a posture that produces love. “Humility is not letting who you are hinder you from loving others” (58).
That’s just looking briefly at the first mark, which is a splendid pacesetter for the rest of Real Christian.

Real Christian may be one of the most practical books I’ve seen in recent years; it’s a book for every believer to read. I do not recommend many books on spiritual living these days, outside of some classics. I’m recommending this one to friends and family this coming year. I think it stands in like category with Don’t Waste Your Life by Piper, Not A Fan by Idleman, or Radical by Platt. If I were a youth pastor, I’d give this book to high school graduates.

Excellent Resource

The Handbook of Geriatric Care Management by Cathy Cress should be known as the bible of Geriatric Care Management. I am a new Care Manager and wanted a resource to help me navigate through this growing field. This book gives me everything from the history of Geriatric Care Management, to how to provide a comprehensive Psychosocial Assessment, to how to navigate through challenging situations in families. Along with the contributions of a host of professionals in the GCM field, it looks like this manual was developed with people like me in mind. I truly feel that this book should be used in every training program or classroom for anyone interested in working with seniors. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

As a brand new Care Manager I found Cathy's book to be immensely helpful! In it you'll find everything you'll need to know to start your own Care Management business - from how to write every kind of Care Plan you could possibly need to how to find referrals and market your business. She also talks about how to manage your business once you get going, and how to develop an organizational structure as you grow. You'll also find information about taking care of difficult families as well as clinical issues you will encounter with the aging client.
The book is well written, well organized, clear and concise! You will not be disappointed, I don't how I would have gotten going without it!
