The first half of the book focuses on localized and often highly idiosyncratic versions of the Passion of Christ. Peterson considers not only what people do in these events, but what it feels like to participate. The book’s second half provides a window into the many expressions of “street dancing.” Street dancing is inflected by localized indigenous and folk dance traditions that are reinforced at school and practiced in conjunction with religious civic festivals. Peterson identifies key frames that shape and contain the individual in the Philippines, while tracking how the local expands its expressive home by engaging in a dialogue with regional, national, and diasporic Filipino imaginaries.

Ultimately Places for Happiness explores how community-based performance responds to and fulfills basic human needs. Many Filipinos rely on family members and immediate neighbors for support and sustenance, and community-based performance assumes a unique and leading role in defining, reinforcing, and celebrating shared belief systems. By bringing forth the internal, phenomenological, and embodied aspects of a range of community-based practices contributing to human happiness, the book offers a cultural framework that interweaves the individual experience with that of the collective, plotting out what resides inside the body through the coordinates of culture.

This is a story of how multivalent participation in performance as spectators, actor-dancers, and/or political satirists creates social glue in forms as varied as sinakulo passion plays, ati-atihan street festivals, youth dance spectacle-contests, and the comic political satire of Mae Paner's 'Juana Change' persona who lampoons class privilege and political corruptions. This is much needed reading for comprehending the portrait of the Filipino as artist in a contemporary context and shows the Filipino use of the arts as a space to create and display cultural identity and communitas in ways that may simultaneously be local, national, and diasporic. A Friendly Book With Mistakes

The good sides to Swan’s Learn Italian include an overview of Italians’ customs and habits, a step-by-step guide into different and common life situations, a friendly format that is really easy to understand, and sentences along with their translations in English. Moreover, it touches the alphabet and its pronounciation before tackling other topics such as booking a hotel room, the numbers, the world’s countries, etc.

However, I have found that no grammar was explained. For a book that is about Learning the basics of a new language, there was no grammar, which is a basis for learning Italian as we might stuff our head with pre-made sentences, but if we don’t know the why or how-to, it won’t really help us in the end as we venture into building our own sentences. I also noticed several typos in English and mistakes in Italian! Yes, you have read well. In a guide to learning Italian, there are mistakes. For example, it is written ‘’�’’ instead of ‘’�’’, ‘’succhero’’ instead of ‘’zucchero’’,etc. It changes the pronounciation and meaning of what you want to say. Now that’s not really helpful, is it?

Overall, it is a fine book if you are looking for cultural notes and vocabulary lists to improve what you already know. However, the lack of grammar and mistakes almost make it useless for learners as they don't really teach the basics to the language and they teach the wrong pronounciation and writing of the words, and you never know where they might hide. For that reason, I give it a 3 out of 5 rating.

Learn Italian?

Want to learn Italian? This wouldn't be the best book for you. Why?
There is a very brief overview of the Italian alphabet and pronunciation. With the exceptions. But there aren't phonetic equivalents for the Italian words in he book.
You do see many Italian words. They are in two column tables. One column Italian, one column English. Unless it is one column English, one column Italian. Most of the book is lists. The capitalization is inconsistent and occasionally the words are in the wrong columns. Needs a basic proof edit. Also, the tables don't adjust for size. If you reduce the size of the font that will probably cause the table to collapse and force you to scroll right or left and still not see all the columns at one time.
There are a few sentences showing some structure, but no conversations, i.e. Paulo and Gina go Milan on the train. Less than you would find in a basic phrases for traveler guide.

Nicaragua forms an extraordinary narrative of a nation in turmoil. Starting with a powerful and chilling evocation of the Somoza regime during its decline in the late 1970s, the images trace the evolution of the popular resistance that led to the insurrection, culminating with the triumph of the Sandinista revolution in 1979. The 2008 edition includes Pictures from a Revolution, a DVD in which Meiselas returns to the scenes she originally photographed, tirelessly tracking down the subjects and interviewing them about the reality of post-revolution Nicaragua. The DVD booklet features a new interview with Meiselas in which she discusses the history of the project.
Susan Meiselas, born in Baltimore in 1948, received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MA from Harvard University. Her first book, the classic Carnival Strippers, was published in 1976. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Hasselblad Foundation Photography Prize (1994) and the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award (2005). Her work has been exhibited at the Biblioth�que Nationale in Paris, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. A member of Magnum Photos, Meiselas was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1992. She lives in New York.

Exceptional combat photojournalism

Another photojournalist in Central America at the same time as Susan Meiselas and I told me that he and Susan would be on the same street corner at the same time shooting the same scenes, and Susan's pictures would always come out better than his. She has an innate knack for indelibly capturing the moment:
the compressed rage of a guerrilla hurling a Molotov cocktail over a barricade; the anguish and terror of a teenaged widow trundling her husband's body in a wheelbarrow while threatened by an off-camera helicopter; the grim faces of the guerrillas, triumphant but by no means finished, as they continue their war into the future. A powerful, very graphic photo essay, best read from the beginning as it starts with the mind numbing poverty under the Somoza dictatorship, through the beginnings of the uprising by kids in blue jeans and bandannas with .22's, and then as the tide turned in favor of the Sandinistas (now heavily armed by Cuba), to final victory, with the grimy, hopeless faces of Somoza's men now tied up and awaiting beatings and possible execution. A bonus feature is a DVD of Susan's return to Nicaragua, to track down and interview the people she'd photographed over a decade before. The young widow, still wearing the same earrings as in her photo with her husband's body in the wheelbarrow, wept with disappointment that the revolution had failed to achieve dreams of a better life for the working class poor. I do have to comment that the DVD started breaking up about halfway through and became impossible to play. Nonetheless, I strongly reccommend that anyone with an interest in recent third world revolutions buy this gem before it's gone.

A Beautiful book and a major photographic piece of work.

Susan Meiselas reminds me of an FSA photographer of the thirties, independent, relentless and technically proficient, she worked her way around Nicaragua, skilled in the Spanish of the area, she was in the midst of a violent revolution, in which one photographer/correspondent was coldly executed. Obviously courageous, she exposed herself to potential serious injury or death. The prints in the book are of superb quality, and what makes this book really special is the attached DVD that shows how she revisited the people and the areas she photographed many years before. The video is moving, of the impoverished revolutionaries who had hoped for a better life, of the depressed and hungry wife, of the still young former soldier, missing part of one arm, who was disillusioned and frequently wept, of the very tough Indian woman, burying a man under fire at age 14 with little or no help. This is a very, very special book. Strongly recommended for anybody interested in photography and Latin American History.

Being from Nicaragua, I absolutely appreciated this compilation of memories. I highly recommend this book for both, people who want to learn about the Nicaraguan experience and for ex-patriots who need to remember.

The recipes are absolutely horrible

I really wanted to love this book, (I love Vega products, and I do like the nutritional information presented in this book), but the 12-week meal plan was the biggest reason I bought it and I'm completely disappointed by the recipes. Brendan prefaces the recipe section by admitting they were created for nutritional value, not taste (which is completely accurate), but they don't even work. The past 2 mornings I've tried two of his pancake recipes and not only do they taste disgusting, they're simply uncookable. I've doubled the cooking time, turned up the heat, tried even baking the batter in the oven for an hour and it won't turn into anything. My dog even spits out these recipes. I can't go on cooking from this book. I'm going to take the expensive new ingredients I've bought and find ways to incorporate them into other vegan recipes.

My experience, in detail :)

I've been doing this diet for 2.5 weeks now. I feel great, there's certainly enough food in a day to keep me full (sometimes I can't eat it all). But here are my problems: 1. The base ingredients are rather expensive. Even though they will last for quite a while, getting started was costly.
2. It's very time consuming to make the dishes. I do the recovery drink and only have a little while to get into making the protein drink. And then it's time for the next thing, and the next.
3. It's messy. Fruits and veggies, ok-you expect some rinds and juices and so forth. But all the other stuff (hemp protein, flax seed, carob powder, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.) are all ground very fine to a powder or at best just slightly chunky. It easily gets all over the place. I'm not a slob. It's just messy.
4. This is just part of the deal and not really a valid "issue", but I pee A LOT. And I have gas A LOT. It's apparent why, given the foods, but just thought I'd throw that out there in case someone wants to know :D

I feel healthy. As soon as I'm done with my workout I eat about 5-7 dates and a bunch of water on my way home. I then make a recovery drink. *I NEVER FEEL SORE OR STIFF!!* I was doing the cold baths, which suck, and after reading Brendan's book I know now they also tax my body's energy by trying to stay warm and then warm up again. Making your body more alkaline quickly is way better-you eat and take care of lactic acids at the same time. I'm sticking with vegan raw. My biggest concerns with straying from the recipes is making sure I get a balanced and healthy diet to meet all protein, vitamins, minerals, carbs, fats, etc. without doing too much of one thing and not enough of another.

Ultimate method for clean body building

I went from 150 lbs to 185 of pure muscle after reading this. Says it's for vegan's but really about eating plant-centrically. Whether you like processed foods, meat, dairy, etc... we all want more consistent energy and mood. Brendan unveils the true nature of the human body, how it responds to foods, and how to live a free and easy lifestyle that is health re-enforcing and not restrictive all while raising immunity so the body is much less likely to experience the many common diseases of today. Great for training. I put on 35 lbs of muscle mass with Brendan's guidance, eating plant-based. Kale, quinoa, smoothies, avocados, eating 4-5 meals a day, over 50% raw, over 50% green... yes! Love it! Pro-active approach... turns the body into a fat burning, muscle building machine. Paired with proper exercise... results are astounding. Paving the way for the future of how we experience food and relate to our bodies. Thank you Brendan!
