About the Author
Sean Bennett is a former program coordinator for the Truck and Diesel Department at Centennial College, as well as a former corporate trainer for Mack Trucks. During a 20-year tenure at the college he authored new curricula, helped overhaul existing course offerings, and chaired a wide range of curriculum development committees for the Province of Ontario. Bennett has written more than 30 books dealing with diesel, truck, heavy equipment, and automotive technology and currently devotes his career to technical writing and speaking engagements. He is an active member of the American Trucking Association's Technology and Maintenance Council, the Association of Diesel Specialists, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the North American Council of Automotive Teachers. He is widely regarded as the foremost author in medium/heavy duty truck technology.

Very outdated

This book is quite overpriced for very outdated information. It is A 2011 copyrighted edition but so much information is pre-2010. In many chapters, the author talks about new technology or legislation possibly coming for 2010 but this edition is supposed to be 2011. What happened to the update? Also, there are missing diagrams, pictures, and charts. The text points to to a certain Figure, but the figure is missing or wrong. I lost count of how many grammatical errors I found and highlighted in this book. There is NO information on the Volvo i-shift transmission. And again, why is there NO ANSWER KEY for the questions? Although the book is loaded with information, it needs a real update. I must say, however, that I have been using this book and "Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician Certification, Test Preparation Manual," by Don Knowles (read my review for that book), and I have passed 4 ASE certification (Fall 2011) tests on the first attempt.

Burg (coauthor, The World Almanac of the American Revolution, Pharos, 1992) competently delivers a narrative summary and chronology of major events in the United States and throughout the world during the Depression. He offers seven chapters, each covering one or more years; brief contemporary quotations from politicians, journalists, authors, and advertisements; and 80 black-and-white photographs. The appendixes contain a selection of primary sources, mainly New Deal statutes and other documents, and capsule biographies. The focus is somewhat different from that of existing reference series such as Britannica's "Annals of America," which is stronger on primary sources, and Time-Life's "This Fabulous Century," which offers better photographs. More recent competition comes from Victor Bondi's American Decades, 1930-1939 (Gale, 1995), which has a topical arrangement, a more attractive layout, and greater scope beyond politics but lacks the quotations. About the Author

Dr. August E. ("Augie") Grant is J. Rion McKissick Professor of Journalism at the University of South Carolina and Chief Research Analyst for 1World Online. Grant is a technology futurist who specializes in research on new media technologies and consumer behavior. His teaching and research combine the study of traditional and emerging media, with emphases on media management, organizational structure, integrated communication, and consumer behavior. As the world becomes more complex so does communication.

The wolf whistle has been replaced by face book. Semaphores replace by telegraph, by phone, by today's "The Twonky (1953)" type iPhone.

It used to be good enough to be literate but without an understanding of today's communications and the underlying technology one might as well be blind and dumb.

This book is a great overview and place to start. Later it makes a great reference to use as you encounter (and you will) the different media not only used at the office but at home and soon every walk of life.

I have to admit that my favorite chapter is the first as it covers the history of communication and I lived through most of that history. However I use the rest of the book before making purchase decisions. I am amazed how well the book keeps up with common communications. Of course that could be because this is the Twelfth edition and the newer information had been crammed into it. If a thirteenth edition come out there will be newer information however this edition will still have all the fundamentals and history will not have changed that much.

I agree with HP, there are no pages and that can make it very difficult with citing from the book. On top of that when I am looking for something I have to guess where the information is. It's confusing and tedious. This kindle version needs to be updated with pages. I don;t know if getting the hard cover for rent would be easier or not.

A new biography serves up Jerry Brown, once over lightly

If you wrote a novel about a guy like this, who was the son of a popular and successful governor; dated a rock star; married for the first time at age 67; twice served as governor of the country's largest state, four decades apart; talked the voters of a notoriously anti-tax state into raising taxes substantially; ran for president three times; spent three years in a Catholic seminary, studied with Zen masters in Japan, and worked with Mother Teresa; and . . . well, you get the point. Would anyone believe this? No doubt they'd think you'd gone, as my British friends say, barking mad.

If, instead, you wrote a biography of this curious phenomenon, you'd need it to be a lot longer than a couple of hundred pages, right? And, of course, you'd need to spend days in face-to-face interviews with the guy, if only to get a solid sense of whether he's for real. How could anyone possibly do justice to him otherwise? Well, Trailblazer is 248 pages long, one-third of them taken up with notes and other backmatter, and the author never managed to interview his subject. That, in a nutshell, is the problem with Trailblazer, Chuck McFadden's new biography from Berkeley's University of California Press of the impossibly self-contradictory Governor Moonbeam.

Don't get me wrong: Trailblazer is a well-informed portrait of our Governor, written by a man who reported on his ups and downs for many years as a Sacramento political reporter for the Associated Press. As an introduction to Jerry Brown for anyone who doesn't remember his early days in politics or is too young to do so, Trailblazer works. McFadden, now retired, retains numerous contacts among the working press in California, whom he quotes extensively in the pages of this book, adding considerable insight. His writing is clear, his understanding of the extraordinarily complex politics of this nation-state is impressive, and he brings the story of Jerry Brown up to the present moment. It's just that a reader would have wished for something more -- something new and fresh that a truly in-depth study of the man's life and work might have brought to light.

If you know little or nothing about our second Governor Brown, you'll learn that he has long been accustomed to being "the smartest guy in the room"; that, as a politician, the fundamental contradiction in his life is the give-and-take between idealism and pragmatism; that the women in his adult life, Linda Ronstadt in the 70s and his wife Anne Gust for the past two decades, have smoothed over the rough edges in his personality and brought a considerable measure of balance and stick-to-it-iveness to his conduct; and that he may well be one of the most skillful politicians this state has ever seen. Is this enough? You be the judge.

Chuck McFadden has done an excellent job of capturing the essence of Jerry Brown, and maybe Jerry would agree. Chuck's many years covering California politics make him uniquely qualified to show us every side of this complicated man. A complicated smart man, who fits perfectly with the attributes of the great state of California. Bravo, Chuck McFadden!

Very complete!

This is an extended version of Moo's "Encountering the Book of Romans." It provides more in-depth commentary and explanation. I found myself going back and forth between the two books.

excellent but out of print.

few volumes were written in the now defunct wycliffe exegetical commentary, and it is a darn shame. we're all familiar with douglas moo (conservative evangelical from trinity evangelical seminary) and this commentary is one of the best. in general the most respected volume on Romans is the one by cranfield (international critical commentary). another is that by fitzmyer. these two are written from a more academic position (if you didn't know fitzmyer was a catholic priest you might sometimes doubt his belief altogether). for those of us who are conservative but yet academically bent, this is the best, or rather was the best, longer than either cranfield or fitzmyer, and with more language analysis. i don't think moo ever finished the second volume; instead he redid both in his one volume commentary in the NICNT series. if you want to really study Romans ( and are more concerned with the text itself and less about interacting with liberal german scholars ), you would do well to find an old copy. by the way, no offense meant to fitzmyer!

A complete, all-round book

It's the best book for pharmacy students who want to pursue their careers as pharmacists or pharmacy technicians and their native language is not English. For a teacher, it saves loads of time which you would have to spend browsing the internet for resources.

ok the book has a great vocabulary bank but it's not very well classified. The content is good but it's not clear and it's a little difficult to use. It's not friendly but it's a great resource.

Charles Adams BSc (Agric) Hons, Dip Applied Educ., Fellow Institute of Horticulture, is a lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, formerly at Capel Manor and Oaklands College, an external examiner in horticulture, and also a member of the Royal Horticultural Society Qualifications Advisory Committee.

Mike Early MSc, BSc Hons, DTA, Cert Ed., formerly a lecturer in horticulture science at Oaklands College, St. Albans, now works as a landscape gardener.

Jane Brook BSc (Biochemistry) Hons., MSc (Applied Plant Sciences), MSc (Environmental Management) is a freelance lecturer specialising in Plant Science. She teaches at Capel Manor College and Middlesex University and has previously taught woodland ecology at the University of Hertfordshire.
