a wonderful translation of a russian master
By astrid lindgren
" Late blooming flowers" is a less known masterpiece by Anton Chekhov, written while he was still in medical school. Being a native russian speaker myself and having read Anton Chekhov in original, I wanted to find a truthful and talented translation- as a gift to my english speaking friends, and i found this translation of a heartfelt story "Late Blooming Flowers" to be one of the best out there. It is a faithful translation of one of the greatest talents in Russian classic literature yet the translation itself flows flawlessly in English and is easy to read, not stilted at all , unlike some others- the example being acclaimed Pevear's translations - which i personally do not find all that good.
In my opinion, Dr.Chertok did outstanding job with this book translating it into English, keeping the nuances of the original language's structure and syntax as much as possible yet making it a pleasant read in English.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience!!!

Commodore: A Company on the Edge, by Brian Bagnall

Filled with first-hand accounts of ambition, greed, and inspired engineering, this history of the personal computer revolution takes readers inside the cutthroat world of Commodore. Before Apple, IBM, or Dell, Commodore was the first computer manufacturer to market its machines to the public, selling an estimated 22 million Commodore 64s. Those halcyon days were tumultuous, however, owing to the expectations and unsparing tactics of founder Jack Tramiel. Engineers and managers with the company between 1976 and 1994 share their memories of the groundbreaking moments, soaring business highs, and stunning employee turnover that came with being on top in the early days of the microcomputer industry. This updated second edition includes additional interviews and first-hand material from major Commodore figures like marketing guru Kit Spencer, chip designer Bill Mensch, and Commodore co-founder Manfred Kapp.

A terrific read: educational, fascinating and frequently hilarious
By GoonMoon
Let me state plainly up front that I was a Commodore Kid: a happy owner of both a 64 and an Amiga. So there is a certain nostalgia kick I might have received while reading this book that other people might not get to the same degree. But I actually don't think it's particularly important to have been familiar with Commodore's products to appreciate this book. The first half of it serves more as a highly illuminating journey into those crazily fast-moving times in the second half of the 1970s, when the industry went from being a few companies selling mail-order, solder-it-yourself boards with a CPU and eight LEDs to a brave new world of self-contained home computers no more than five years later. No industry has ever become so important so quickly, and Chuck Peddle, MOS and Commodore were at the very heart of it.

Peddle is the figure who appears most frequently in the text, and the book at times takes on some of his irritation at the rewriting of history by Apple at the expense of Commodore. The chippiness is amusing at times, but, in truth, it's justified. I was there, even if as a kid, and I remember how hugely important Commodore were in those days. Apple were a relatively minor player with their expensive machines. The Macintosh was the first thing of any real significance they did, building on the Xerox PARC ideas and seeing (correctly) that GUIs were the way forward. But it was Commodore who brought home computing to the masses (along with Sinclair in the UK, a company whose significance I was happy to see this book acknowledge).

This is really terrific stuff if you want to get a good idea of how we got from there to here. Even the very Commodore-centric stuff speaks volumes about the way the commercial landscape was changing constantly in a general sense, and how a project that could seem a good idea when initiated could end up as a dud because the market had moved on in the meantime. There are some mindblowing "What if...?" moments where one can see how a chance moment or a seemingly-random decision can have an enormous knock-on effect when viewed in retrospect. (Particularly fascinating is the story of how VisiCalc became an Apple rather than a PET product by pure chance, and the ghastly moment where Bob Russell realizes that a tiny engineering blunder is going to ruin his disk drive plans and result in loading times 30 times longer than designed, and that nothing can be done about it.)

There are fascinating and enthralling vignettes as well: the story of William Shatner's association with Commodore (and how Commodore computers ended up with cameos in many of his movies), and a truly terrifying tangential recollection of the disastrous airplane flight that nearly killed several of Commodore's top people including founder Jack Tramiel.

There are a few criticisms I could make - in places the book feels like the editing was rushed and could do with a second pass - but it would be churlish to dwell on them. Giving the book five stars is a no-brainer for me, because I enjoyed every minute of it. And it felt really *important* to me that this story was being told. Although author Brian Bagnall must at some level be doing this for financial recompense, I sense that more than anything else this was a real labor of love for him. And it is one that I appreciate greatly: I'd like to say "thank you" for putting all the work in to tell such a rich and interesting story about some genuinely important but undersung heroes of the home computer revolution.

Oh, and I *really* want to read Volume 2 about the Amiga now...

Fantastic in many ways but... where's my Amiga??
By Melante
I finally got my hands on this book after more than one year waiting. The book fulfilled my high expectations in many ways but left me with a somewhat bitter taste in the end. Why?
Well, beware that the expanded contents on the early Commodore days are there at a price: the Amiga is not covered at all and is left for a second volume coming (hopefully) in 2012!
If I knew this in advance I would have much preferred to search for the earlier edition: a bit less detail and interviews but, ultimately, more comprehensive in overall scope.

In the end, if you were a big Amiga fan, you may want to track down a first edition (or, of course, wait for the next book), otherwise this is a unique and extremely deep insight into everything else Commodore which spans also the early personal computer industry as a whole (and let me say it should be a must read for all Apple fan boys too ;-) ).

Disappointing Telling of a Great Story.
By Nicholas R. Lefevre
In the interest of full disclosure I write this review as an insider at Commodore from just after the launch of the C64 through the purchase of Amiga, after which I rejoined Jack Tramiel ("Jack") and other Commodore veterans at Atari Corp. Needless to say I bought this book with great anticipation. It is a disappointment.

The book should have been titled "A Biography of Chuck Peddle and Stuff" but I suspect that would not have sold well. Commodore was Jack. Further, for American audiences Commodore was the C64 and, to a lesser extent, the VIC20. Despite this fact, the vast majority of the book's focus is on Chuck Peddle and the PET. Even though the second edition of this book was published in 2010 and Jack did not die until 2012, the author appears to have never interviewed him.

The core problem appears to have been that Bagnall actually interviewed only a handful or two of the players. Thus we get huge amounts of detail from the perspectives of relatively few players (some admittedly central to the Commodore story) but most no longer active at Commodore during the VIC20/C64 years, the years of greatest interest to the audience for a book on pre-Amiga Commodore.

Examples of the scattershot approach of failing to interview more broadly are legion but I will give an illustrative example. Bagnell clearly interviewed the engineer, Bill Herd, extensively and dedicates pages to him. However, Bill joined Commodore in 1983, well after the VIC20 and C64. His work was on projects that barely saw the light of day (how many had a Plus/4?) and that were supplanted by the real Commodore successor to the C64, the Amiga. It was designed by the engineers at Amiga. At the same time, the author never even interviewed Shiraz Shivji, who, with his team, was the first to propose to Jack that Commodore make a personal computer and who headed the systems engineering team for the C64.

In it's favor is a wealth of detail on the engineering history and certain of the players, particularly for the PET years.

The saddest part is that the book fails to bring Commodore to life. Here was a company defined by a bigger-than-life Jack Tramiel and surrounded by a fascinating cast of characters yet the book fails to convey the color and feel of being a part of it. So many hilarious and fascinating anecdotes are left out that could have given a sense of the place.

A far better telling of the crucial period at Commodore can be found in Mike Tomcyzk's "The Home Computer Wars" which, though perhaps too narrow, properly focuses the attention on Jack Tramiel and is filled with revealing anecdotes. The truly great history of Commodore remains to be written.

The Net and the Butterfly: The Art and Practice of Breakthrough Thinking, by Olivia Fox Cabane, Judah Pollack

In The Charisma Myth, Olivia Fox Cabane offered a groundbreaking approach to becoming more charismatic. Now she teams up with Judah Pollack to reveal how anyone can train their brain to have more eureka insights.

The creative mode in your brain is like a butterfly. It's beautiful and erratic, hard to catch and highly valued as a result. If you want to capture it, you need a net. Enter the executive mode, the task-oriented network in your brain that help you tie your shoes, run a meeting, or pitch a client. To succeed, you need both modes to work together--your inner butterfly to be active and free, but your inner net to be ready to spring at the right time and create that "aha!" moment. But is there any way to trigger these insights, beyond dumb luck?

Thanks to recent neuroscience discoveries, we can now explain these breakthrough moments--and also induce them through a series of specific practices. It turns out there's a hidden pattern to all these seemingly random breakthrough ideas. From Achimedes' iconic moment in the bathtub to designer Adam Cheyer's idea for Siri, accidental breakthroughs throughout history share a common origin story. In this book, you will learn to master the skills that will transform your brain into a consistent generator of insights.

Drawing on their extensive coaching and training practice with top Silicon Valley firms, Cabane and Pollack provide a step-by-step process for accessing the part of the brain that produces breakthroughs and systematically removing internal blocks. Their tactics range from simple to zany, such as:

Imagine an alternate universe where gravity doesn’t exist, and the social and legal rules thatgovern it.
Map Disney’s Pocahontas story onto James Cameron’s Avatar.
Rid yourself of imposter syndrome through mental exercises.
Literally change your perspective by climbing a tree.
Stimulate your butterfly mode by watching a foreign film without subtitles.

By trying the exercises in this book, readers will emerge with a powerful new capacity for breakthrough thinking.

"The Net & the Butterfly" far exceeded my expectations - it works wonders for breakthroughs in personal relationships
By Rae
As a psychotherapist and coach, "The Net & the Butterfly" was put to immediate use with a highly successful in business client who was unfortunately highly unsuccessful in personal relationships. I had not yet finished reading the last pages of "The Net and the Butterfly" when I recommended an exercise from the 'Butterfly Repellant' chapter - it has many simple exercises that create an amazing paradigm shift in self image. One exercise enabled my client to separate from an established identity that had been destroying relationships to establishing brillant new connections. This book has many exercises that far exceeded my expectations.

Breakthoughs aren't just for Einsteins
By Sarah Beak
This brilliant, inspiring, and fascinating book is a must read. I have spent hours, days, weeks, and even, gulp, months focusing all my attention on a creative problem only to feel farther and farther away from the answer and more and more frustrated. The Net and the Butterfly has taught me to stop trying so hard to "figure out" the answer. And instead, go wash the dishes or walk the dogs or take a much needed snooze and allow another, wiser part of my brain to take over the heavy lifting. In so doing, I'm allowing breakthroughs to happen without trying to force them (and without driving myself and my friends crazy). Does it work? Oh, yes it does. And, I'm so grateful. Judah Pollack and Olivia Fox Cabane have reminded me and taught me that breakthroughs are not just for the Einsteins, but also for those of us just trying to offer our own unique gifts to the world. Well done.

Must read for anyone in need of creativity or innovation
By Ric Merrifield
This book breaks down in very clear language how the brain solves problems and comes up with new ideas - and unlike most books - it walks you through how to train your brain to do these things. And if that weren't enough - it is really fun to read.

So many books today have one fairly simple idea and a handful of good examples to back it up. The Net and the Butterfly has a great example on almost every page. Books like The Power of Habit and Moonwalking with Einstein are amazing in their own right - but this book takes some of the concepts in those books to a whole new level. Just the idea of the "DN" Default Network and how your brain works when you are not actively working on an idea, problem, or opportunity, puts things in such clear terms it's refreshing. I can think of entire departments in companies that should read this.

In terms of who specifically should read this - it's a pretty long list from the most experienced CEO and CTO to the most junior person in marketing. The book is so well written and there are so many great examples from Chuck Yeager's intuition that he would break the sound barrier to the way Einstein got to his theory of relativity after collaborating with what amounted to a drinking buddy.

Manuka: The Biography Of An Extraordinary Honey, by Cliff Van Eaton

Not so long ago, in a small island nation in the South Pacific, beekeepers produced a most peculiar honey. It was much darker than the clover honey everyone put on their toast in the morning, and it tasted very different. In fact, the honey was a problem: it was hard to get out of the combs, and even harder for beekeepers to sell. Today that honey, manuka from New Zealand, is known around the world. It fetches high prices, and beekeepers do everything in their power to produce as much of it as possible. Wound dressings containing manuka honey are used in leading hospitals, and it has saved the lives of patients infected with disease - causing bacteria that are resistant to standard antibiotic drugs. In so doing it has forced the medical profession to rethink its position on the therapeutic properties of natural products. This book chronicles the remarkable 'rags - to - riches' story of manuka honey, as seen through the eyes of a New Zealand beekeeping specialist who watched it unfold from the very beginning. It's a great tale of science, in which an inquisitive university lecturer found something totally unexpected in a product everyone had written off. It's also an entertaining account of the way that seemingly simple discovery caught the international media's attention, helping enterprising New Zealanders to develop manuka honey - based products and take them all around the globe. But above all else it's a story of hope for the future, sounding a note of optimism in a world that for good reason feels saddened and sometimes even afraid about the future of the special relationship we humans have always had with those marvellous creatures, the honey bees.

Phantoms of the Other: Four Generations of Derrida's Geschlecht (SUNY series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy), by David Farrell Kre

Features a reconstruction of an unfinished text by Jacques Derrida from his most penetrating series of readings of Heidegger’s philosophy.

During the 1980s Jacques Derrida wrote and published three incisive essays under the title Geschlecht, a German word for “generation” and “sexuality.” These essays focused on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, taking up the rarely discussed issue of sexual difference in Heidegger’s thought. A fourth essay—actually the third in the series—was never completed and never published. In Phantoms of the Other, David Farrell Krell reconstructs this third Geschlecht on the basis of archival materials and puts it in the context of the entire series. Touching on the themes of sexual difference, poetics, politics, and criticism as practiced by Heidegger, Derrida’s unfinished third essay offers a penetrating critical analysis of Heidegger’s views on sexuality and Heidegger’s reading of the love poems of Georg Trakl, one of the greatest Expressionist poets of the German language, who died during the opening days of the First World War.

“A major contribution to Derrida studies, to Heidegger studies, and to philosophy.” — Walter Brogan

“This study of Derrida’s several engagements with Heidegger under the title of Geschlecht shows Krell’s remarkable scholarship, linguistic ability, philosophical insight, and subtlety at their very best.” — Charles E. Scott

Phantom of An/Other book? This book is not an edition of Derrida's Geslchlecht lectures or even a reconstruction of the third
By Orson Welles
This is an illuminatng book, but I would not have purchased it had I known that it is a book about Derrida's lectures, not a critical edition of them. There is no reconstructed typescript of the third lecture in this book.

Venusberg: A Novel, by Anthony Powell

Written from a vantage point both high and deliberately narrow, the early novels of the late British master Anthony Powell nevertheless deal in the universal themes that would become a substantial part of his oeuvre: pride, greed, and the strange drivers of human behavior. More explorations of relationships and vanity than plot-driven narratives, Powell’s early works reveal the stirrings of the unequaled style, ear for dialogue, and eye for irony that would reach their caustic peak in his epic, A Dance to the Music of Time.

Powell’s sophomore novel, Venusberg, follows journalist Lushington as he leaves behind his unrequited love in England and travels by boat to an unnamed Baltic state. Awash in a marvelously odd assortment of counts and ladies navigating a multicultural, elegant, and politically precarious social scene, Lushington becomes infatuated with his very own, very foreign Venus. An action-packed literary precursor to Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, Venusberg is replete with assassins and Nazis, loose countesses and misunderstandings, fatal accidents and social comedy. But beyond its humor, this early installment in Powell’s literary canon will offer readers a welcome window onto the mind of a great artist learning his craft.

Review
“Elegantly casual and scandalously funny. . . . Venusberg, I once read somewhere, is a satire on totalitarian government. That’s as good a handle for it as any. Yet it concentrates much more on men and women than upon the laws that govern them. . . . In some of the best light dialogue of our time, Powell makes clear the difference between feverish sophistication and true worldliness.” (Charles Poore New York Times)

“A brilliant picture of diplomatic and less exalted society in a little Baltic State. Mr. Powell’s dialogue and comments are crisp, shrewd, and satirical, and his second novel is a worthy successor to Afternoon Men.” (Spectator (UK))

“Powell’s novels bite deep, but only to reveal that even at our most foolish we are all in it together.” (Leo Lerman New York Times)

“Looking back at Powell’s earlier novels, it is possible to see him discovering there how to use his razor-sharp satirical sense until it is purged of bitterness and extravagance.” (Elizabeth Janeway New York Times)

“In this era of YouTube, cell phones, and Snapchat, the possibility of real strangeness or feelings of isolation in foreign travel are almost impossible to recover, in addition to the sometimes unpleasant colonial overtones some such novels evoke. In Venusberg, however, the charm and humor of such a setting comes through, even as Powell searches after deeper themes. . . . Venusberg is valuable because we see Powell working out perspectives that would later form the basis of Dance.” (Gerald J. Russello The Millions)

Ehhhhh
By Patrick Odaniel
I love A Dance to the Music of Time and sought out this early work of Powell's in the hope of recapturing the sparkling repartee and zest for living that makes Dance so delectable. Better luck next time. This slight (150 page) farce concerns a young British wastrel, Lushington (get it?), who, for lack of anything better, goes off on a slow steamer to a Northern Baltic country that has been recently liberated after the Great War (think, oh, I don't know, Latvia or something). There on the boat he meets most of the novel's principal characters: a down-at-the-heels count, a fake fat count who sells soap and a vamp countess. These tired drawing-room caricatures, which must have been cliched at the time, spend the rest of the novel wasting away and finally relieving the reader by dying from consumption, confrontation, revolution or irresolution (except for the fat count who steams back to England in the interest of soaping up the British Isles). There's a tiresome party or two with the kind of conversation that makes one wonder how did Powell become the writer who created those wonderful, festive scenes in Dance. I'm thinking he had some kind of literary equivalent of Paul's journey on the road to Damascus (or at least became a born-again writer). In any event, this book is strictly for hardcore Powellians (or, perhaps, pole-cats) interested in the great writer's roots and willing to forgive a youthful transgression into the wilds of stuffy, Northern European aristocracy.

A very great read!

I read this book right after Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, and this book, about half the length of the other, is far superior. I believe this was only Powell's second novel. A funny, confused protagonist named Lushington finds himself in a small former Soviet colony of beautiful society ladies, with ultimately tragic (but, yes, funny) and unsatisfying outcomes. He even blows his heroic welcome home party. It's Powell at his best, writing about parties, parties and more parties of the rich and famous, intertwined with real drama, a nice, tight mixture in a little book.
