The paper begins with Frederick Douglass's Narrative from 1845, continues with W.E.B. Du Bois's Darkwater from 1920 and finishes with The Autobiography of Malcolm X from 1965. The purpose of this chronological organization is to better trace the development of black autobiographical writing over the period of 120 years. Each autobiography's discussion is divided up into three distinguishable components. A summary of each memoir provides a background against which the further stylistic and thematic discussions can be attempted. Secondly, the historical circumstances, basic structure and narrative techniques of the respective eras of black autobiographical writing and of the specific works will be discussed. The purpose is to closely look at typical features (or, in the case of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, genres) of black autobiographical writings in each period and then, in a second step, analyze each work's specific stylistic and narrative peculiarities. The third and last component of each autobiography's discussion is a close textual interpretation. It shall analyze the development of the self-image of each author as presented in his autobiographical work. These observations will be synthesized in the Conclusion of this thesis paper. The eventual aim of this study is to prove the three thesis elements. First of all, it shall be demonstrated that African-Americans have written autobiographies to comment on the unjust societies they have been living in since slavery. About the Author
Gertraud Goodwin�was born in Germany in 1951. In her first career, she worked as an surgery nurse at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. Her sculpture training at the Alanus-Kunsthochschule near Bonn (1976–1979) was followed by training in sculpture therapy. In 1982, she moved to England, where she taught at the Tobias School of Art in East Grinstead and at Emerson College, Forest Row, as well as working with graphics. In 1987 she started to teach sculpture and graphics in her own studio. Gertraud Goodwin has exhibited in galleries in London, Brighton, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland.�

Great wireless book for wireless that isn't 802.11 & Bluetooth!

Let me preface this review with this: I am a penetration tester, but I am a complete newbie when it comes to radio and radio theory. What was very helpful for me is that this book has a whole chapter (Chapter 2) on radio systems and theory, which really helped me learn everything I needed to know in order to add radio reconnaissance to my penetration testing arsenal.

There are two things that really stick out about this book:

1. The authors do an excellent job of applying the theory presented in the book with case studies of real life penetration tests. While there are case studies at the end of many chapters, there is a whole chapter (Chapter 8) dedicated to a penetration test on a casino. Yes, plenty of other books have case studies, but where this one stands out is that it includes additional sections on remediation and lessons learned. This was a welcome addition to the excellent case studies given. Many testers have to face this after the test: "I just broke it, how do I fix it!". This book gives you some help with the remediation process.

2. Many times throughout the book, the authors go the extra step to cover things that testers might forget about when performing the engagement, such as checking with local laws and making sure your scope and rules of engagement allow you perform that specific test. While you can find plenty of technical books, very few mention proper testing techniques beyond running the tool.

This book clearly reflects that the authors know their trade very well and is very well written and illustrated. Wireless Reconnaissance in Penetration Testing is great for someone just getting into radio (like me) or even the seasoned amateur radio operator. There is plenty of content outside the theory chapter, both on the radio side and the penetration test side. This is the first and only book I have seen combining radio theory with penetration testing and it should quickly become the standard read on this topic. Well done Matthew, Alex, and Chris!

A great book for all levels - Highly recommended

I bought this book to not only brush up on things that I already knew, but also to learn new tools and techniques that could help with performing penetration tests.

This book is great for people of all skill levels and should be read by all. The authors provided a nice blend of theory vs. real world in an easy-to-understand format. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in the security field.

What a blessing

My sister and I listened to this book from Audible and I am now reading his other book. Such a sweet, well written story of despair and hope.Having just lost a husband less than a year ago, I can certainly relate to his sorrow and feelings of worthlessness - being old and useless. What a blessing this book as been to me.

A Book for everyone

There is a part of me that didn't think I needed to review A Man Called Ove because so many people have read it at this point, but I have talked to a few who have not, hence my desire to write this review.

I will admit that I am entirely on the Ove train!

The book is about a man, named Ove, who is the angry neighbor that we all seem to have. He complains about everything, has put up signs around his neighborhood with rules about what should and shouldn't be done, and feels there is a proper place for everything. He is not a friendly guy to say the least.

Into his life walks or rather drives a family who are to be his new neighbors. He doesn't bother to get to know their names and calls them the pregnant one and the lanky one. After an accident with the lanky one, Ove is forced to help this family, complaining the entire time.

Throughout the book Ove also speaks to his wife, complaining about the neighbors, the rule breakers, and how much he misses her (very minor spoiler). During interludes within the narrative, we read about how Ove became Ove. I will say by the end of the book, a bunch of dust was flying around the room and some got into my eyes.

The first thing to write is this book is funny. Ove is quite the character and how he treats people is hysterical. He just doesn't care what he says or how he says it. He simply wants order in his world and has lived that way for all of his life. The way he expresses himself becomes incredibly funny.

It is also a tragic story. Backman interweaves the two (funny and tragic) quite well and doesn't make it overly heartwarming. This could have easily become a book with the sentiment that we don't know people's past, so don't judge them, but it isn't. Ove is an ass in his past too and sometimes with reason. Backman keeps it level with just enough to make the reader fall for Ove.

The great thing is this is a book that pretty much anyone and everyone can (and will) enjoy. I recommended this one for book clubs and discussion groups. Grandmas will like this as well as middle aged men. Ove is simply a good book.

An amazing feel-good story

This is a gem of a feel-good debut novel about A MAN CALLED OVE by Swedish author and blogger Fredrik Backman. It will make you laugh and make you cry and you will remember Ove for a long time.

Some would call Ove a curmudgeon, a lovely word meaning a bad-tempered, difficult, cantankerous person. His wife called him the most inflexible man in the world - he borders on being obsessive compulsive but is generally a grumpy man who doesn't tolerate fools and likes things to be done that way he wants them. While many think that he is just a rude and grumpy man, at heart you will find out that he is one of the kindest persons you will ever know.

Ove is a 59 years old widower who has just been arbitrarily retired after 30 years in the same job. His world now revolves around his home and neighbourhood housing complex where he rules the roost making sure that all local rules and regulations are followed. He is very lonely since his wife died, he quarrelled with his best friend and neighbour years ago and rarely has contact with his neighbours.

Ove's world is one of anger and sadness. One day a new neighbour accidentally flattens Ove's mailbox driving in an area where vehicles are prohibited. This starts a very amusing, heartwarming and frequently very sad story as Ove's rigidly structured world is disrupted by unexpected friendship from Parvaneh, a vivacious small and very pregnant Iranian woman who has moved in next door with her Swedish husband Patrick and two girls. Parvaneh is perhaps the only person who can take on Ove directly and win, and starts to change his life for the better.

We also go back to how Ove met his vivacious and loving wife Sonja who was the direct opposite of Ove. At a critical time in her life she said to him "We can busy ourselves with living or dying, Ove. We have to move on." Now a widower Ove is struggling to move on.

This is one of the best feel-good stories I have read for some time and it gets a place in my best books for 2014. I strongly recommend it to someone who wants to read something different that will hit at your heart. If you are emotionally affected by books I strongly suggest keeping a box of tissues handy.

About the Author

An important addition not only to the Bundy literature but also literature about criminal defense work

I was totally enthralled by this book, but need to give a caveat: I used to practice law in Seattle. I even worked on one of the cases in this book and knew several of the people Browne writes about. I can't recall ever having had the pleasure of meeting the author, although I certainly knew of his existence. Nevertheless, reading about cases and people I used to know makes the book far more interesting to me than to the average reader, and in that sense, I might not be the most objective reviewer with respect to how exciting the book is.

But it is exciting!

At one level Browne writes like a true crime writer. He worked on some of Washington's most fascinating criminal cases and his memoir covers them: Ted Bundy, the Wah Mee massacre, the Wenatchee child molestation ring, the Barefoot Bandit, and the Kandahar massacre. At times when Browne uncovers fraud in the system and gets his client off, you will feel like cheering for him.

But the book goes deeper: At its heart is Browne's opposition to the death penalty -- how he developed his legal philosophy and how he implements it in the courtroom. And at times, Browne becomes very personal. His honesty about some of the less pleasant aspects of his life touched me.

The book's biggest bombshell? Without a doubt, Bundy's confessions to Browne. Browne offers the reader information about Bundy and his murders we didn't know about before. Sometimes Browne's account of Bundy's criminal exploits deviates from the known facts. For instance, other books claim that Bundy stole the jailor's clothing and stole his escape car in his second jailbreak, but Browne claims Bundy had an accomplice who provided the car and clothing. I wish Browne would have explained the deviation, e.g., was that the version Bundy told him? The lack of explanations about the deviations is my only complaint about the book.

All in all, well worth the read, and important addition not only to the Bundy literature but also literature about criminal defense work.

Bravo, Mr. Browne, and now I really regret not having had the chance to have met you in the courtroom!

A Must Read for 2016

I am currently a criminal justice graduate student and recently had a paper to write in my criminal sexual behaviors class which involved Bundy. (This is aside from other classes in which Bundy was discussed regularly).. After countless hours of interviews and Google searches I stumbled across this book. I immediately purchased, received it today and have read it all completely within a matter of a few hours.

Even though much of my interest was in regards to Bundy, wondering if questions I had would be answered, learning the life of Browne was captivating. He is much more than what the media portrayed and I enjoyed learning that about him.

I'm still left with more questions than before but am closing the book with much satisfaction. If you're reading this review and are contemplating the purchase, don't. Buy it now.

---Also, I must say I like the way the book was created, more particularly the text size. It wasn't so small that you strained to keep reading or keep your place.

For me the content doesn't fulfill what the title and subtitle and description seem to promise. Maybe I took the reviews too seriously and expected just too much. It's a quick read anyway. By the way the river between Hong Kong and Guangdong Province is not Yangtze River.

Great music book!

I got this music book for my niece who loves the films. She was very excited upon receiving it even if the titles and lyrics are in Japanese.

After flipping through the book, we would say it is for late intermediate/early advanced so she found it perfect for her skill level and enjoys playing it when she can.

Might consider ordering another for me. =)

Beautiful music!!!

I love these songs. Even when I didn't like the movies, which was rare, I loved the songs. Almost every single one of these is great. My only complaint, the songs aren't in order. I'm pretty sure they are all there. There are none missing so far as I can tell, but if you can't recognize the songs, you should get somebody who reads Japanese to tell you what they are, because the list in the product description is out of date, I think. Other than that, nothing wrong here. Love this music. Love it. Love it. Love it.
