Karate is a martial art that focuses on the application of strikes using the hands and feet. It originated in Japan and has become popular throughout the world. There are many styles of karate but the most widely practiced outside of Japan is Shotokan. Training in karate is normally divided into three sections: the basic technique; kata, or sequencing of techniques to imaginary opponents; and kumite, the sparring done with an opponent. Gradings are the exams needed to progress to the next level. Typically, three months is needed to progress through each grading. There are usually three or four gradings per year, each with a syllabus. In total a student must pass ten gradings in order to get a black belt--this, on average, takes a student four years to attain. Packed with useful how-to diagrams and guides on technique, this book covers the training required to attain a black belt.

Classy!

As a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, I'm always looking for ways to branch out. Therefore I was quite pleased to find and delve into the classy 222 page paperback "The Shotokan Karate Bible: Beginner to Black Belt 2nd Edition" by Ashley P. Martin, Chief Instructor and Grading Examiner at Just Karate of Cambridge, UK. The material is visually pleasing, glossy, colorful, and instructive.

After mapping out a brief history and lineage of Shotokan Karate, the author then gives the novice karateka a run down on the basics of uniform, stances, punches, kime, Japanese commands, and grading examinations. Once the reader has completed those chapters, then the next sections work the practitioner through the necessary subjects for each belt level. Martin covers basic forms, appropriate katas with a few applications sprinkled in, one-steps, and kumite. The pictures are clear and crisp, with short explanations and instructions next to each photograph. The first appendix tackles the grading system for every belt level with a simple set of usable charts. The second appendix works through each kata, from kihon to bassai dai. It is set out in a way to show the whole kata in a visually directional format.

The highlight of the book is chapter eleven which addresses kata application. The author recognizes that the basic level of application, omote bunkai, is not very satisfying as it simply sticks with surface details of the kata; "low block, high block, punch, etc." Martin then discusses a second level of application, ura bunkai, which delves deeper into how each move has multiple uses. Next he points out a third level where blocks, for example, can also evolve into strikes and joint locks. The author photographically delves into examples of this third level from various katas to make his point: kihon, heian shodan, heian nidan, heian sandan, heian yondan, heian godan, tekki shodan, and bassai dai. Beyond the basic information in the book, chapter eleven may well be what makes this book most valuable.

The only real weakness becomes obvious when attempting to follow the katas and learn them. The practitioner will need to have a personal instructor to figure out the arc line of blocks, grabs, kicks, stances and punches. The photos simply don't - and can't - show all of the finer details. The other option is to use the book in conjunction with watching a good instructional video, such as "Shotokan Sensei" on YouTube. The book is ultimately an outside-the-dojo supplement to actual instruction.

"The Shotokan Karate Bible" is a useful and valuable volume that will make a good addition to any martial arts library. Karate instructors of whatever tradition should obtain a copy to use as a reference, since many of the kata stances, strikes and blocks are very similar and the applications in the book will broaden out your instruction. I highly recommend the book.

About the Author
Jerome Schaufeld's wealth of experience in entrepreneurship, operations, and general management of technology-based companies ranges from his current role as Professor of Entrepreneurship at WPI to an assignment as a commercialization consultant at Children's Hospital in Boston. He served as Director of the RI Slater Fund, was President and CEO of Mass Ventures, and he has a "hands on" track record in several early-stage companies that ranges from functional to board-level advisory roles. He is a member of the Launch Pad Angel Group in Wellesley and Co-founder of the Cherrystone Angels in Rhode Island. In addition, Mr. Schaufeld is an advisor to the newly formed Boynton Angel group in Central Massachusetts, a charter member of the national Angel Capital Association (ACA), and a founder/ participant in the regional NE Angels ACA group. Mr. Schaufeld was a founder and the first Chairman of the MIT Enterprise Forum. He also founded the Incus Group, which is a CEO-level business acquisition and resource organization.Mr. Schaufeld was co-founder of Phoenix Controls Corporation. The company pioneered an approach to the control of air flow in critical laboratory and hospital environments and was successfully sold to a Fortune 500 company. A Great Read that Addresses the Complexity of the Commercialization Decision

There is an overwhelming amount of innovation emerging from R&D departments around the world. Should it be commercialized just because the internal team thinks it's an innovation? Not that my tech manufacturing clients want to hear it, but the answer is often "no." It's been a long time since "if you build it, they will come" has worked. Now there is a way to get across the complexity of the commercialization decision and develop a roadmap for a likelier path to success. Jerry Schaufeld's book provides the tools needed to make this decision, regardless of the size of your company or industry. For example, his "commercialization cycle" helps us understand both the internal and external challenges at each stage, whether you're pre-investment, early stage, or series A. Is this the right idea for us to pursue, given our strategic goals? Is this an opportunity who's time has come? Do we understand the competitive environment? Do we understand the economic, technical, operational, and legal issues and risks? How long will it take us to get to break-even? Brooklyn James is an author/singer/songwriter inspired by life in the Live Music Capital of Austin, Texas. Sole Sister is book 2 of The Boots My Mother Gave Me series. If you have not yet read book 1, The Boots My Mother Gave Me I highly recommend you read it before this one.

Sole Sister took me on a journey of two sisters who were always there for each in good times and bad. It takes place 7 years after the ending of The Boots My Mother Gave Me.

This story is about two sisters who were different in so many ways but were ALWAYS there to help and support each other. These two went through a bad childhood with an abusive and alcoholic father. It’s been 8 years since he took his life by blowing a hole through his chest with a shotgun. The ramifications stemming from their childhood still effects them both, just in different ways. This story is about family, love, acceptance, understanding, strength, heartache, fear and so much more.

At page one I had a huge smile that stayed on my face for quite a while. I was excited to find out where they’re lives would take them. There were many of fun times and sad times, I laughed I cried and I feared what some of the outcomes would bring them.

Harley already had Jeremiah but Kat was not ready to trust anyone enough to have a relationship at this point in her life. The two men who she loved most, let her down and she did not want to go through that again. In walks Connor, a very sexy man that NEEDS Kat in so many ways. It takes a while for Kat and Connor to finally connect, and through this there are many obstacles in their way.

I loved reading how Harley and Jeremiah dealt with several issues that pop up during this read. I loved how Harley and Kat were always there to help each other out and give sound advice to each other. I LOVED how Kat and Connor were there for each other. I loved how Kat learned through her sister and Jeremiah how to handle her teenage daughter Megan. I was VERY invested in this story, the twists and turns and ALL of the characters.

There was just one thing that bugged me, sometimes there was just too much thinking going on. At times I felt it was unnecessary and it did drag for me in a few spots. Despite that, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED IT!

The ending was WONDERFUL! Everyone is happy and Harley and Kat finally face all their childhood issues ending this book in the best possible way.

Overall I feel this series was an epic read, it dealt with so many bumps in the road of life. I know this story will be in my mind for days to come.

About the Author
Richard A. Beasley (Deexwudu.oo) is a Raven (Y�il) of the Coho (L'uknax.�di) Clan. He is a lifelong carver who has worked as a professional artist for nearly thirty years. He apprenticed under Steve Brown, Duane Pasco, Loren White, and the famed Tlingit carver Nathan Jackson. He also took classes from renowned Northwest Coast art expert Bill Holm, professor emeritus of art history and anthropology at the University of Washington, where Beasley earned a bachelor's degree in metal design.

Lots of Pictures explains 3 Vol format

One of the earlier reviewer noted that this three volume set includes significant repeated material concerning culture and tools. This reviewer suggested that rather than being a legitimate three volume bookset, these should have been combined into one book with three project chapters. After receiving my copy of Tlingit Wood Carving: How to Carve a Tlingit Mask, I found this criticism to be particularly unfair. This book contains well over 300 full color photos, illustrating in deep detail every aspect of the creation process. This extensive a color rendering adds significant cost to publishing and more than justifies dividing this into separate books for every project. While not a carver, I found the book incredibly inspiring and may hope to pick up the adze in the future. I also hope they add a volume on creating bentwood boxes and paddles.

Excellent Tutorial

This well illustrated book was very helpful for a young man I have been mentoring. He is fascinated with wooden masks, and used this book to help him create a model and then a full scale Tlingit mask. This book inspired him to connect with his Tlingit heritage, and develop a great deal of self esteem. Excellent illustrations, and step by step explanations, with discussion of cultural significance, and methodology. A practical and useful resource.

There are three books in this series. They are very well illustrated with excellent instructions. With some patience and perseverance you can read, imitate and be successful. The books illustrate a deep respect for the Tlingit culture and an eagerness to share with the reader.

About the Author
Katherine Ackley earned a Master's degree in English from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in English from Ball State University. She taught at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point from 1979 to 2002. In addition to teaching in the English Department, she was coordinator of the Women's Studies Program for 10 years and Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies for five years. Her research interests center on women in literature, with emphasis on literary representations of women's issues and, more recently, British crime writers. Her books include THE NOVELS OF BARBARA PYM (1989), WOMEN AND VIOLENCE IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1990), MISOGYNY IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1992), ESSAYS FROM CONTEMPORARY CULTURE (2004, 5th Edition), and PERSPECTIVES ON CONTEMPORARY ISSUES (2015, 7th Edition). She has published dozens of articles and has received more than 20 grants for research and development. In 1992, she became the first woman to receive the UWSP University Scholar Award.

And so when he receives an anonymous note inviting him to that same spa for a noon appointment, naked..., Keane decides to give it a try. And when he finds there Rayche, he is not sure that he wants to give on for only a naughty nooner.

The story is light and very naughty, mostly about free sex without two very handsome men; sometime, reading on their hot encounter, I had the impression to be reading a script for a porn movie, but then, that is the purpose, isn't it?
