Wollheim had three great passions--philosophy, psychology, art--and his work attempted to unify them into a theory of the experience of art. He believed that unlocking the meaning of a painting involved retrieving, almost reenacting, the creative activity that produced it.

In order to fully appreciate a work of art, Wollheim argued, critics must bring to the understanding of a work of art a much richer conception of human psychology than they have in the past: "Many [critics] . . . make do with a psychology that, if they tried to live their lives by it, would leave them at the end of an ordinary day without lovers, friends, or any insight into how this came about." Many reviewers have remarked on the insightfulness of the book's final chapter, in which Wollheim contended that certain paintings by Titian, Bellini, de Kooning, and others represent the painters' attempts to project fantasies about the human body onto the canvas.

Reviewing the book in the Los Angeles Times, Daniel A. Herwitz asserted that Wollheim had "done no less than recover for psychology its obvious and irresistible place in the explanation of what is most profound and subtle about paintings."

Wollheim notes that De Kooning crammed his pictures with the infantile experiences of sucking, touching, biting, excreting and swallowing. The expressionist's violent paintings are about the body as locus of sensation and emotion; they remind us that, as children, we felt threatened by our own natural bodily functions. Penetrating insights like these pepper the difficult lectures presented here along with some 400 illustrations. Wollheim, a philosopher of esthetics, offers a psychological theory of how pictures transmit meaning: artists act as agents, inducing in the mind of the spectator the mental states that compel them to paint. The author's favorites include Manet, Picasso, Titian, Bellini, Ingres, Poussin. These essays will help readers identify the unrepresented "internal spectator" lurking in some pictures; with other paintings, one discovers how the artist wanted the external spectator to feel. Wollheim delivered this set of lectures at the National Gallery of Art.

Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts for 1984, this collection of essays focuses on Wollheim's psychological account of painting, in which he argues that two elements are important: the artist's mental state, which causes him to paint what he does, and the experiences the painting evokes in the viewer. Aesthetic theories centering on meaning as a core element in determining aesthetic value have had rough going because of the difficulty in knowing or interpreting what an artist "means" or "intends." Classic must read about painting

Painting as Art by Richard Wollheim (Princeton University Press) provides the first sustained discussion of the complex of perceptions, design, pigments, biography, social history, and lived experience that becomes the experience of a painting as a work of art. Wollheim is well conversant with the philosophical issues while bringing a depth and expertise to the appreciation of the art and craft of painting within both broad historical contexts and the minutiae of a particular artist and this unique painting. So that what he says about any painting becomes a phantasmagoria of informed facts and conjectures that is a marvel approaching Keats' truth, beauty; beauty, truth. Wollheim's interpretations are intrepid corrections of received wisdom and well-argued virtuoso interpretations. His scientist's appreciation of the subtle effects of perception blends well with an informed style; not an easy read, but one likely to educate one's sensibilities anew.

Keynote Book on The Art of Painting

There is a wealth of crunchy cake to digest in Wollheim's, Mellon Lectures, packaged here as, 'The Art of Painting'. If you are at all seduced by the act of painting, whether as a practitioner or as a spectator(painters fill both roles) the arguments and perceptions, so brilliantly and patiently elucidated, will nurture your eye. This is a resource book I've returned to over and again during the last decade, and that's a very high recommendation for any text. The reproductions are thoughtfully laid before us where and when they count against the writing. The insights on Bellini, Manet, and de Kooning in particular I found arresting and novel, pushing the boundaries at all times. The notion of appropriation, so relevant during recent decades, is cogently unravelled. Wollheim writes for,'Modern Painters' magazine and has books on psychology still in print. An introduction to statistical thermodynamics provides a basis for the understanding of equilibrium thermodynamics and contributes to an understanding of kinetics. The author emphasizes the necessity for materials science students to be knowledgeable in both the sciences and engineering and provides background for both. Numerous problems supplement the end of each chapter. Volume two begins with a brief review of macroscopic thermodynamics and then expands into the thermodynamics of defects and interfaces. A strong emphasis is placed on kinetic phenomena with sections on evaporation from surfaces, mean free path of molecules in gases and diffusion. Kinetic phenomena in the solid state topics include nucleation, spinodal decomposition and reaction kinetics. Also covered is the thermodynamics of rubber elasticity.

About the Author
About the Author David V. Ragone received his S. B., S. M., and Sc.D. degrees in metallurgical engineering from MIT. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in thermodynamics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 1953 to 1962. From 1962 to 1967, as chairman of the materials department and assistant director of the Hopkins laboratory at the General Atomic Division of General Dynamics, he directed research on materials for advanced, high-temperature, gas-cooled nuclear reactors. He then served as Alcoa Professor of Metallurgy at the Carnegie- Mellon University, where he was also Associate Dean of Urban and Public Affairs. In 1970, he was named dean of the Thayer School at Dartmouth, and returned to the University of Michigan as Dean of Engineering in 1972. In 1980, he was named President of the Case Western University, where he served until 1987. He returned to teaching undergraduate courses in thermodynamics and the physical chemistry of materials at MIT in 1988, and began writing texts shortly thereafter. In addition to his appointment at MIT, David Ragone is a partner in Ampersand Ventures, a firm whose focus is on ventures in specialty materials and chemicals. He has also served as a member of the National Science Board and as a director of more than a dozen public and private companies. His professional society memberships include ASM, AIME, and ACS.

Good Intermediate Materials Science Teat

This review refers to Volume I which was I used in a recent graduate materials thermodynamics course. Completing two prior courses in classical thermodynamics oriented towards mechanical engineering and a survey course in Materials Science proved helpful in providing a background for a better understanding the material in this text. However, the basics are developed but in less detail. The text is definitely oriented towards understanding the basics in the application of thermodynamics to materials science and provides reasonable coverage of chemical equilibrium and binary solutions.
The material is developed sequentially so it is best to start at the beginning and work through each section. Fortunately I had access to most of the typographical errors but they do not represent a major hurdle to the basic quality of the theory presented and its understanding. It would have proved useful to the student had the author included answers to selected problems. Overall, I found this to be a good intermediate text.

What Happened to Lonely Planet?

Easily the worst Lonely Planet I've ever used, and I've depended on the series for all my trips since 2001. They once had colorful, clear maps that clarified which parts of the city had key sights, and made getting around by public transport a breeze. By contrast, the maps in this book were confusing, monochromatic, didn't make recommended sites very easy to notice, cut off important destinations completely, and placed the crease right in the middle of the most important destinations repeatedly throughout the book. The descriptions of hotels were superficial, to the point it was obvious the author had never stayed there. There was meager information on history, politics, the current situation (including security). Hotel options for Quito were heavily weighted towards the rowdy and sterile Mariscal Sucre tourist zone (nicknamed "gringolandia" by the locals)--even though this was also supposed to be one of the most dangerous parts of town for tourists. However it appears that an increasing number of hotels have opened closer to Old Town in recent years. How about some more info on those? There needed to be more tips on how to use the public transport system. This book stuck to the basics, but it was tough to use, crowded, hard to get on and off, and station names were almost impossible to see. Lonely Planet's maps were not possible to read on a dark Metrobus packed with people, and I overshot my stop several times. I ended up doing a lot of asking around. The book also needed to make greater mention of how to protect yourself from rampant petty crime on public transport. Several of my family members got pick-pocketed. One had his bag slashed on a long distance bus from Quito to Riobamba, and his electronic devices stolen. We learned that he shouldn't have placed the bag under his seat, out of his watch. We also gradually learned not to take our wallets at all, and simply carry change in our pockets. We would have appreciated some helpful advice like that!!

I gave up on Lonely Planet halfway through the trip, switching to Moon's Quito guide. While it was designed for Quito, the basic info it had for the rest of Ecuador was still more useful than Lonely Planet's supposedly in depth info. The hotel descriptions were fuller, the place descriptions helped understand the sights, and the security information was invaluable. Finally, if you travel there, you should know that the Quito airport has moved way out of town, and the Lonely Planet's info for getting from the airport to town is therefore out of date.

The most useless kindle book I've ever bought

The information is too general and is full of what the author thinks is important instead of a careful city by city approach where attractions, food, lodging and contacts are grouped in a coherent way. Trying to find anything, even a hotel in Quito, let alone real information on indigenous ceremonies is impossible using the search function of the kindle. In addition the book has no index. It's the laziest Lonely Planet guide I've ever read. I won't be coming back for any more after this.

A Nearly Useless Guide

I bought the kindle version of this guide, and I'm in Ecuador using it. This sets a standard for uselessness. The offline maps are unusable: cluttered, uninformative, and undersized and of poor quality. The Google Map feature is almost as bad. It seems to be impossible to save locations on the map to my locations, leaving the user with a clumsy process of doing so manually.

The text is minimal, the information about individual places, whether restaurants, museums, churches or whatever is glib and boilerplate.

When moving around a city, you want to be able to discover things that are near where you are, but (as an example), Quito, a large and complex city is dealt with as a monolithic entity. I'm staying in the north of the city, and finding a way to orient yourself, let alone learn how to get around the city (the only real advice: take a taxi) is impossible.

The table of contents is laughably minimal, and navigating around the book is hard to do.

A far, far better option is just to use Google and Trip Advisor, and save the money.

An Excellent Work of Fiction on a Controversial Subject

This is the first book I read by Sheri S. Tepper, who has a written a great many books since her late-in-life entry into the world of authorship. This isn't her first work, but it is probably one of her most talked about. That's actually putting it tamely. Many people really argue about this book, feel deep seated insecurities about what others think of the book or embrace it with a little too much fervor.

Why?

Gate is essentially a post apocalyptic tale, with the fall several hundred years in the past. The world is lovely and quiet, with a slow rediscovery and recovery of technology. The world, at least as far as these folks reach, is based on widely spread walled towns. Where it gets tricky for folks is that these towns are inhabited only by women, their children and a few men who have undergone a complete separation from "normal" male life.

And what is normal male life in this new world? They live in garrisons, each protecting "their" town and women. They do lots of drilling, lots of yelling and male bonding and lots of big talking regarding their prowess. They interact with women personally only during scheduled free for alls, but the women seem very obliging in the matter. Every so often the men get word of some major insult from one town, or women relay, leader to leader, that there is some threat somewhere and a few towns' men march off in great honor to fight and come back far fewer in number.

Hmm...wonder why this makes male readers a bit uncomfortable at this point?

The main character is Stavia, though there are many other characters who are just as strong and vivid, and she essentially goes through her young life and into adulthood in this story. She is becoming...in all ways. She intuits and then discovers the world and what has happened within it as well as the secrets that only a very few know in Women's Country.

It is a difficult book in some respects. Mostly because it touches on some things, at various points, that many (perhaps even most) women feel deep down inside but go their entire lives never once speaking about to another soul. It touches also pretty deeply on how solutions aren't at all what they are sometimes cracked up to be.

Now, it isn't perfect. There are some resolutions that wouldn't be possible in our world and some mystical bits that always seem to wander in. All in all, it is very satisfying and one I'd want to keep to read again a few years later so I can refresh my enjoyment. It will certainly give you some pause to think.

And, for the guys; no, this isn't a man-hater book. It does put some issues on the table that are otherwise taboo though. I mean, we all know facts and numbers, but there is little alternative history to compare to. What can we point to as a truly woman dominated society to compare with our male dominated one to see, empirically, what is better? So, if you do read this, keep in mind this is a fiction writer with an interesting speculative slant on a story. It is certainly worth a read for anyone with an interest in speculative or alternative history fiction as well as post-apocalyptic fiction.

My Favoriate Book!! Five Stars!

I was so lucky to happen to come across The Gate to Women's country! From the moment I began to read it, it took off. Sheri S. Tepper's ideas are so original and her characters are so well developed you can not help but to keep reading. There are so many twists and turns throughout the book and the ending is jaw dropping. I've seen alot of bad reviews from men that are borderline hysterical, stating this book can "ruin the world". It's a work of fiction and it is excellent, it has anything one could wish for in a story, drama, love, war, lies, suspense and on and on. The only negative comment I would have is that I wish it was longer.

Read this one twice!

I don't want to reveal too much about this book, because one of the most rewarding things about it is watching the expertly crafted plot unfold, doling out tiny hints and clues, but never truly revealing everything until the very end.
This story takes place in three time frames. Stavia in the present, a woman and mother, forced to surrender her 15 year-old son to the warrior clan of men which claims most of the males of her society. Stavia in the far past, age 10, seeing her brother go to men's country and in the process, meeting a warrior of her own who makes her question everything she knows to be true. And last, Stavia as a young adult, compelled to break the rules of society for the warrior who has haunted her life.
There is a fourth portion of this book, a play which is enacted every year in "Women's County," a play which seems a bit obscure at first, but grows into a key to reveal all the books secrets.
My best advice is to read this book twice. I finished my first reading, turned back to page 1 and began again. The second time through, all the clues jumped out, screaming for notice. A lot of things I glossed over in the first reading became so VERY important. Most of all, the play takes on new meaning, revealing some things I would never have noticed without reading it a second time.
I give this my highest recommendation. Everyone should read this book!

An orignally excellent book downgraded by poor printing

Content-wise, this is still a an excellent text on beach and coastal processes. However, at least on the copy I sourced through Amazon, the quality of the printing and particularly the illustrations is poor and it is not worth the money.

About the Author

Swati Y. Bhave, Visiting Consultant, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, is an internationally known pediatrician and adolescent specialist. She is Executive Director of an NGO―Association of Adolescent and Child Care in India (AACCI). She has been the President of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP ) in 2000 and presently holds the post of coordinator in the International Pediatric Association (IPA). She is also a member of the Technical Steering Committee ( TSC) of the child and adolescent section of WHO, Geneva. She is a former Professor of Pediatrics in BJ Medical College, Pune and Associate Professor in Grant Medical College, Mumbai. She has also worked as a Senior Consultant and PG teacher at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences. She has many medical books to her credit specially in adolescent health and her current interest is adolescent mental health. She has also written books for the layman and participated in many shows on TV and given radio talks. She was Editor of the Asian Journal of Pediatric Practice from 1994–2008.

Sunil Saini is doing research work in the Department of Applied Psychology, GJUS&T, Hisar, Haryana, and has a lot of research experience on anger and anger related problems. He has published about 40 research papers in national and international journals and has edited a book with Dr Swati Bhave. He is currently Associate Executive Editor of the journal Indian Psychologist.

A must have for architecture buffs

I love this book. It is made up of 38 essays written by some of history's most prominent architects: Vitruvious, Palladio, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Koolhaas, Frank Gehry, Gropius, Corbusier, to name just a few. Love, love, love Adolf Loos's infamous essay Crime and Ornamentation. This book gives a person a lot to think about in terms of architecture as art, architecture and its relationship to nature, and what defines an architect. It also has several essays on the future of architecture, one penned by Norman Foster, which I thought was particularly good. I also enjoyed reading the essays by the early pioneers of the Modern Movement, who sought to destroy everything they knew of the previous ages and build anew--basically from the standpoint that every generation deserves to create their own cities and homes and not rely on a past that no longer has meaning. For the budding architure geek, this is the book. A fantastic primer.
