About the Author
Bruce Block has worked in a creative capacity on dozens of feature films, television shows commercials and animated films. His feature film producing credits include Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want, America's Sweethearts, The Parent Trap, and Father of the Bride I & II. He served as creative consultant on Spanglish, As Good As It Gets, Stuart Little and many other feature films and television productions. He is an adjunct Professor at the USC School of Cinema & Television and teaches classes in visual structure at the American Film Institute, PIXAR Studios, Walt Disney Feature and Television Animation, Dreamworks Animation, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Industrial Light & Magic and a variety of film schools in Europe. A Unique, Must-Have Book for Filmmakers

I teach a class called "Story" at Los Angeles Film School and this book is on my Recommend Reading List for all students but I especially tout it to cinematography, production design and directing majors. There are many books that talk about the basics (shot size, 180 degree rule, etc.) but if you want to go beyond that to find out what kinds of choices the great filmmakers make and why, this is the book with the answers.

One thing young filmmakers and students often fail to understand about the auteurs and master directors is that they base their shots on what serves the story, not the fact that the shot "looks cool." I love the fact that author Bruce Block talks so much about the need for the visuals to follow and reflect the ups and downs of the underlying story structure. I also love the fact that that he takes film theory and shows the filmmaker how to apply it. Ordinarily, film theory and film practice are two separate worlds.

I never thought I'd find a film book I liked better than the first edition of "The Visual Story," but now I have: It's the 2nd edition, which has a bigger, easier-to-read format, many more color illustrations and more, updated examples. The students who've taken my advice and read this book are blown away by it. I believe it should be mandatory reading for anyone who is in the film business or who hopes to be.

Groundbreaking, A Must-Have

I have a large library of filmmaking books but this is one I would probably grab if the place caught on fire. It really makes you think about the visuals of your film and could have been called Visual Design for Filmmaking. It has very helpful illustrations and you can tell he put a lot of thought into what he is saying. The only other books I would recommend are Cinematography by Brown, Sight Sound Motion by Zettl, and The Filmmaker's Eye. And those are pretty much all you need to know, imho.

As one of the few surviving archaeological sites from the medieval Christian kingdom of Nubia, Qasr Ibrim is critically important in a number of ways. It is the only site in Lower Nubia that remained above water after the completion of the Aswan high dam. In addition, thanks to the aridity of the climate in the area, the site is marked by extraordinary preservation of organic material, especially textual material written on papyrus, leather, and paper. Particularly rich is the textual material from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries CE, written in Old Nubian, the region's indigenous language. As a result, Qasr Ibrim is probably the best documented ancient and medieval site in Africa outside of Egypt and the Maghreb.

Medieval Nubia is the first book to make available this remarkable material, much of which is still unpublished. The evidence discovered reveals a more complicated picture of this community than originally thought. Previously, it was accepted that medieval Nubia had existed in relative isolation from the rest of the world, subsisting on a primitive economy. Legal documents, accounts, and letters, however, reveal a complex, monetized economy with exchange rates connected to those of the wider world. Furthermore, they reveal public festive practices, in which lavish feasting and food gifts reinforced the social prestige of the participants. These documents prove medieval Nubia to have been a society combining legal elements inherited from the Greco-Roman world with indigenous African social practices. In reconstructing the social and economic life of medieval Nubia based on the Old Nubian sources from the site, as well as other previously examined materials, Giovanni R. Ruffini corrects previous assumptions and provides a new picture of Nubia, one that links it to the wider Mediterranean economy and society of its time.

I have advised my students to avoid this text.

On marking student submissions on aircraft design projects last year, I came across a small number of peculiar anomalies, derived from references to an earlier text by this author. When I subsequently saw some more of the authors' work recently, I was horrified by how many factual inaccuracies even a small sample contained. I could not advise anyone to spend money on this book.

Well written but all over the map as far as subject matter

I found this Schaum's outline to be a very well written book on a variety of elementary mathematical subjects probably most suitable for someone who has just graduated high school and is a freshman starting some kind of technical degree. However, beyond that, I am not sure exactly who the target audience is supposed to be. The book contains some information on the very basic computer math that a college freshman engineering or IT student would need to know such as binary number systems and computer codes and math. However, some of the other material is very much oriented towards the aspiring computer engineer but is not really mathematical such as the sections on logic, flowcharts, sets and relations, and logic gates. Other sections are mathematical but don't necessarily have anything to do with computers and could be just as helpful to a student of applied mathematics such as the sections on linear algebra, linear equations, statistics, and graph theory.

Thus my recommendation would be that if you need a good tutorial on a variety of mathematical and pseudo-mathematical topics that tie in well with a technical degree of any kind, the low price of admission on this odd little outline is probably worth it. Just don't expect it to rescue you in any one course in particular. It will more likely rescue you in particular sections of several courses instead.

This book tremendously helped me understand computers and their relationship to mathematics and helped clear about doubts all through the semesters in college that I studied computer science. I strongly recommend this book to anyone majoring in computer science, information technologies, computer programming, etc ... as this book serves as a pillar to understanding the fundamentals of computer hardware and software.

Eric Ames is associate professor of German and a member of the cinema studies faculty at the University of Washington. He is the author of Ferocious Reality: Documentary according to Werner Herzog and Carl Hagenbeck’s Empire of Entertainments.

This is a book of 9.5. Let me explain you why.Whenever I take a book (and probably you too) by instinct, I am (we are?) "aware" of how far are we in our reading, and of how much is still left to finish the whole book. Actually, we expect to reach "soon" the last pages...and end our "mission". However, when I was reading Werner's interview, something strange happen; I did not want that my reading of it could ever ended. The whole book is full of wisdom, sarcasm, sharp humor, teachings, culture, critical thinking and emotions in such an exquisite way, that you want more amd more and more of it, and as a reader you become "sad" that it will have an ending. As Lawrence Krauss (and Truffau) mentioned: Herzog is a living Genius, and this interview is so well done, so clearly articulared, that at the end; you will want to know more about Herzog, to learn more about yourself. There is only one book about Herzog, better than this one: the guide to the perpexled (that is a book of 10).

i bought this book in March 23rd 2016 for $50 plus shipping and when i went to purchase another , there were 2 used for $2000-$2350 dollars ..WTF? i think a $100 to $200 is a very fair price for this book , but there are Redemption websites where you can download the information for free. This book contains a lot of forms (IRS and Legal forms to print out of the book) so there must be some kind of "cons-PIRACY' with these books selling for more than the Sovereign Filing Solutions has listed at times for $139 to $169...wait a little while and i'm sure the market will adjust the price accordingly .
