As the daughter of archetypal Victorian parents and Freud's first English publisher, Woolf has often been a posthumous analysand; but among her chroniclers, Dalsimer, a clinical psychologist and faculty member of two Ivy League universities, may have the best credentials for putting her on the couch. "This is not a biography," Dalsimer warns; it is, instead, an exploration of "the ways that writing served Virginia Woolf" throughout her difficult life, and particularly in her "adolescence and young womanhood." Approaching Woolf through her juvenilia, diaries, letters, criticism and novels, Dalsimer (Female Adolescence: Psychoanalytic Reflections on Literature) traces both her artistic apprenticeship and her psychological narrative, placing Woolf's introspective observations alongside her early work from Jacob's Room to A Room of One's Own and amid plenty of analytical commentary. While Woolf claimed that in her autobiographical To the Lighthouse she had "done what psychoanalysts do for their patients," Dalsimer draws out the book's psychology and Woolf's relationship to her deceased parents, and shows the matter to be much more complicated. Dalsimer also demonstrates, through Woolf's later letters and essays, that her affectionate, influential and overbearing father and her self-sacrificing, distant and tragic mother were instrumental in forming her creative character. Woolf's mental illness (which ultimately led to suicide) also receives understated, careful consideration. Dalsimer's clinical objectivity may be more notable than her line-by-line literary criticism, but she elegantly explains how Woolf's imagination, often subsumed in tragedy, could still find pleasure in life's daily rhythms, and how writing "consoled and sustained her as much as it was possible for her to be consoled or sustained."

Columbia University psychologist Dalsimer (Female Adolescence: Psychoanalytic Reflections on Literature) here uses Virginia Woolf's early writing to analyze how she overcame the loss of her parents and siblings to death and marriage by "becoming a writer." Taking a psychoanalytic approach, Dalsimer focuses on the journals, letters, and reviews Woolf wrote between the ages of nine and 25 to explicate this process. She also incorporates Woolf's first published book, The Voyage Out, the essay "On Being Ill," later journal entries, and To the Lighthouse into her study. Dalsimer interprets the role of Woolf's journals during her developmental years, taking an interest, as Woolf did, in the contrast between current impressions of an event and the memory of it. She focuses on Woolf's relationships with her mother and father as depicted in her early writings and on the sometimes hostile impressions she gave of them as an adult. While this well-written work will be of interest to fans of Woolf's work, it ultimately provides only a superficial literary analysis. Thus, it is more appropriate for general-interest collections than for academic libraries. Readers looking for an excellent, current biography should stick with Nigel Nicolson's Virginia Woolf. Highly recommended!

Quick and easy reference to keep in clinic and especially for students of TCM. Really helps to sharpen your skills with herb identification and their properties. It's definitely much better than carrying herb samples around. Pictures are really nice and have the correct herbs being identified. You won't be sorry you bought it!

It wasn't what I expected, but I am keeping it anyway. It does give the pictures of the herbs, but I was expecting more of a description. As a Materia Medica I was expecting more.

TCM student should have this book.

This book help me study the herbal medicine. It was categorized in the herbal action. Index are both Pinyin and Latin name which is very easy for you to flip back and forth. The picture are very clear. I recommended this book to few friends and they're love it. One of my friend order two books and she cut the picture and put in her flash card to help her study for the board exam. Even you are not TCM student, this book was great for people who are interested in used of natural herb, a lot of Chinese medicine are the fruit and vegetables you can found in supermarket.

Filled with so much anticipation!!!

I loved it!!!!

This read was an all nighter I couldn't put it down.

I loved the storyline, the characters, the banter, the chemistry was off the charts!!! There was so much angst and anticipation in this book I found myself holding my breath just waiting for it to happen. The growth between Tahoe and Regina was beautifully written!!

It was an emotional read, I found myself wanting to reach through the pages to hug both Tahoe and Regina. The inner demons are felt throughout the story, I felt myself tearing up several times because I could feel the pain the characters held within.

My only issue is that I wish we could have gotten some of Tahoe's POV *sigh* I would loved to have been in his head. LOL!!

This is a must read!! Can be read as a standalone.

Tahoe, Tahoe, Tahoe! This book was fantastic! I am so glad we got his and Gina's story. I loved how they were just pretty much friends but the sexual tension was so clearly there yet neither one wanted to ruin the friendship that they had. They had such sexual, torturous angst that I kept thinking, just kiss each other already! If I had to change one thing about the book I would of liked them to hook up sooner! But then again that is one of the things that I loved about them. It reminded me VERY much of Remy and Brooks relationship, which is one of my ABSOLUTE favorites! I so hope we get more in the Manwhore series. Ms Katy Evans books are always a one click buy for me. I adore each and every book of hers. Have read them over and over again and again. I would highly recommend this book!

A Lovely. Tender and Heartbreakingly Sweet Romance

Have you ever read a story that very slowly, achingly slowly, builds the tension and heat between the two characters who are obviously meant to be together? For readers who have been reading the Manwhore series, Tahoe is Saint's best friend and Regina is Rachel's best friend and former roommate. Tahoe is another Manwhore who goes through women like water. He is always thirsty but the women never quench his thirst no matter how often he drinks from the well. Regina was terribly hurt by her only serious boyfriend and is attracted to Tahoe from the beginning. Tahoe tells Regina that he will never have a serious relationship so they settle for being best friends. This story touched me on so many levels. My daughter died from Leukemia as did Tahoe's wife Lisa. My daughter's boyfriend of many years played lacrosse. So of course this story had special meaning to me. Katy Evans is one of my most favorite authors and she doesn't disappoint with Ladies Man. Katy helps you feel what the characters are feeling and crave what the characters are craving. You have to read this book to experience the tender love and hot passion that finally brings Tahoe and Regina together. Five plus stars for one of the best stories I have ever read.
