Thabiti M. Anyabwile (MS, North Carolina State University) is a pastor at Anacostia River Church in Washington, D. C. and the author of numerous books, including What is a Healthy Church Member?, The Faithful Preacher, and Finding Faithful Elders and Deacons. He serves as a council member with the Gospel Coalition, is a lead writer for 9Marks Ministries, and regularly blogs at Pure Church, hosted by the Gospel Coalition. Developing Leaders to the Glory of God

A few years ago, I heard Thabiti Anyabwile preach at Together for the Gospel in Louisville. I remember being impressed with his pastoral heart, theologically precise mind, and his feet that were obviously set on obeying and glorifying God. His newest book confirms my first impressions at T4G.

Finding Faithful Elders and Deacons reads like cliff notes for men who either aspire to serve, or are currently serve in either office. And "cliff notes" is not a criticism; rather it is written in the most positive vein. This does not suggest watered-down content or "weak tea." Rather, it affirms the qualifications and responsibilities that emerge in Scripture for faithful elders and deacons. It reminds me of Biblical Eldership by Alexander Strauch - but tends to be less technical. While Anyabwile's treatment is theologically and exegetically accurate, it veers away from some of the more technical language and arguments that appear in Strauch.

The book is arranged in three parts. Part one and part two survey deacon and elder qualifications - in short how to find faithful leaders for the household of God. Part three summarizes the job description of pastors:

Useful, Practical, and Encouraging.

I knew this book was sorely needed when one person in our church suggested making someone else a deacon so that they would start coming to church more regularly!

This book fills a void in a much needed way. It is practical, and easily readable. Anyabwile walks through the texts that describe the requirements for elders and deacons, and gives help to those in churches who are looking for the next generation of rising leadership. Anyabwile ends each chapter with practical questions (with explanations) to help you locate those who are leadership material, and what sorts of things you should be looking for in their lives.

Although the purpose of this book seems rather narrow, in reality it will be helpful in a much broader range of applications. The descriptions of a faithful elder and deacon are really just descriptions of a mature Christian, and therefore this could be a useful tool for discipleship. It is certainly also a useful and convicting book for those already serving in these capacities. Carefully walking through each of the qualifications is a useful bit of accountability, encouragement, and admonition.

If I had to nitpick, I would wish that the book was more broadly and explicitly Christ centered. Anyabwile does give fair warning in the introduction that no elder or deacon is perfect, and that we must always undertake these offices in full reliance on the grace of God given to us in Christ. But still, given the nature of the book, as one that undertakes to describe the quality of person who is qualified to serve in the church, I believe that it could have been edifying to refer to our dependence on Jesus more regularly. No one in themselves is fit to serve as an under-shepherd in Christ's church. But in his grace, God calls men to serve him in his church, and to model Christ as they do so. Still, this is a useful book that I'm sure I will be referring back to regularly.

An Extremely Useful Primer For Biblical Leadership in the Church

In this book experienced pastor Thabiti Anyabwile writes three sections on how to find deacons, elders, and specify what their roles are in the church. Pastor Anyabwile gives the pertinent biblical requirements for deacons and elders, and gives numerous helps on biblical qualifications, traits to watch for, and questions and observations for examining whether or not those under consideration are wise choices for the respective offices of elder and deacon.

I think the best way to use this book is to use it as Thabiti Anyabwile intended it to be used:

"First, use it prayerfully. Pray for pastors and elders as they shepherd and serve the sheep. Pray for more men to be raised up in the congregation for this important work. Pray that the Lord would pour out his grace on those serving these tasks. Pray that the members of the church would show genuine appreciation, love, and care for their shepherds. Pray that all the men in the church would grow in the qualities that elders should possess. Pray that men would have a godly desire to give their lives in serving the body of Christ as servant-leaders.

Second, use this book practically. The book does not delve into a lot of detailed argumentation, hoping instead to make application easily and quickly. I want the book to help in actually doing something--identifying and training elders--not just considering something. Put the suggestions into practice, and improve them with the experience and wisdom that come from your particular church setting and other faithful leaders.

Finally, use the book pedagogically. That is, use it to teach and instruct. Perhaps a church needs to select its first elders after a period of planning and study. Pastors may wish to use these brief chapters to `flesh out' for the average church member which qualities the congregation as a whole needs to be looking and praying for in their prospective elders. Examination and pastoral search committees may find similar help."

Take it from my own experience in over twenty years of pastoring - you want to get all the help you can in the wise selection of, praying for, training of, and role implementation of your elders and deacons - because the church will ultimately rise to great heights or fall to low depths based on the quality, character, and biblical execution of it's leaders.

I highly recommend this book for church planters, existing leadership teams, solo pastors, deacons, and elders. It serves as a concise handbook that you can use to strengthen your existing leadership, develop future leaders, and most certainly add health and value to Christ's church as you seek to be a good steward of its most valuable resources.

About the Author
Stephen Haag is the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Director of the MBA program in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Prior to being Associate Dean, Stephen served as Chair of the Department of Information Technology and Electronic Commerce in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Stephen holds a B.B.A. and M.B.A. from West Texas State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington. Stephen has been teaching in the classroom since 1982 and publishing books since 1984.

Stephen is the coauthor of numerous books including "Interactions: Teaching English as a Second Language" (with his mother and father), "Information Technology: Tomorrow's Advantage Today" (with Peter Keen), "Excelling in Finance," and more than 40 books within the "I-Series." He has also written numberous articles appearing in such journals as Communications of the ACM, Soio-Economic Planning Siences, the International Journal of Systems Science, Managerial and Decision Economics, Applied Economics, and the Australian Journal of Management.

Maeve Cummings is a professor of Information Systems at Pittsburg State University. She holds a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science and an M.B.A. from Pittsburg State, and a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Texas at Arlington. She has published in various journals including the Journal of Global Information Management and the Journal of Computer Information Systems. She serves on various editorial boards and is a coauthor of two concepts books within the I-Series. Maeve has been teaching for 20 years and lives in Pittsburg, Kansas, with her husband, Slim.

Good Book, Kindle version flawed

I think the textbook CONTENT is great, informative and interesting. I like it.

But..

This is my first college textbook in a Digital format. I purchased the kindle version because of the dramatic price difference between e-book and hardcover.I am stuck with this e-book as the class is well underway.

I am using the Kindle for PC and the Kindle for Android version reader software.

While I think it is great to have a copy of the text on both my PC and my Android device for reading, the lack of actual page numbers makes it impossible to find instructor assignments and quote the text for my written assignments.

The page numbers on this particular version are not useful. I show 21245 pages.

There are no references to actual page numbers.(cannot search by page)

The content appears to be re-arranged from the printed version. Some of the learning modules are placed in the back of the text instead of after the chapter in which they refer.

The diagrams and images are not zoom-able on the PC version.

I am pretty sure this problem rests with both McGraw-Hill publisher and Amazon for allowing something like actual page numbers to be ignored.

I am excited that e-textbooks are beginning to show up as a way to save money and save my back from carrying 30lbs of books; however, they need to improve this format to be truly useful for something important like an expensive education.

Management Information Systems for the Information Age

I have used (and continue to use) this text for a college class on MIS. It's among the best textbooks I've ever come across. The book is filled with real world stories of real companies and how they have improved their competitive positions using IT. It also contains numerous 15-25 minute group activities and "On Your Own" assignments. Each chapter ends with a list of Key Terms, as well as several short answer and discussion questions.
Finally, and what I like most about the text, is a section on "Real HOT Group Projects." Many of these require creation of database reports or spread sheet pivot tables. So, you may find yourself diverting some time to teaching spreadsheet and database skills. But how can you teach the application of technology to managing and creating information, without actually using technology to do just that?

These concepts are so vague and open to interpretation - the book does a good job of explaining them. It doesn't try to pigeon hole you into the authors way of thinking about these (which is most often the case). Good reading for the aspiring manager or the experienced manager.

A well written story, not overly described scenery but very well described scenes and amazingly described characters.I really enjoyed this story, but it leaves a lot of questions. The reader is left in no doubt that this is the first in a series.

This book is what 50 Shades wants to be if it ever grows up. 2 stubborn people meet and the adventure begins! Pleasure, pain, joy, hope, and love... Things we all have, need, or want in our lives. I can't wait to read more from this author!

I loved this story

I loved this story! Xavier Brice has been tasked with taking Io away. Of course, Io believes that she is just being taken away to the next place where she will be abused. She speaks bluntly and harshly to protect herself. She has been abused all her life and she believes that no one wants her. Brice punishes her severely when she doesn’t do as she is told. But, she is trying to protect herself from being emotionally harmed. There are many instances of Brice and Io not understanding one another. Unfortunately, it seems Io gets punished every time. Eventually, Brice gets orders to marry Io. He doesn’t know why, but he has come to care for her. The punishments in this story are pretty severe. Io gets punished again and again until she obeys or at least appears to obey. I look forward to the next book in this series. I want to know more about Io’s background. I want to know what her heritage is. I want to know who has injured her and why. I have so many questions that I want answered. I give this book 5 stars!

fantastic book, but read my review first...

I just purchased this book last week and it is a great text book. Dr Martini is one of the best in the field of Anatomy and Physiology, so this text book you will want to keep for future references.

With that said.. Do yourself a favour and just get the 8th edition. I returned my 9th edition. I just do not see the justification to charge someone almost $200 for a new book when the previous edition is almost the exact same, with just replacing of pictures. The 8th Edition can be purchased for less than $35 bucks here on amazon (ISBN-10: 0321505719). Both the 8th and 9th edition even have the same amount of pages, 1264 pages to be exact... something is fishy... New pictures, replacement of cover?

I am pretty certain that most college students are pretty much on the verge of being broke, or soon to be for that matter. Always try to get the previous edition if you can, your save a lot of money, around 1/5 the price. These publishers just drive me nuts, I understand they need to make money, but come on, most of these books are never completely rewritten and they come out with a new edition every 2-3 years and those editions like this one, are almost exactly the same, except for replacement of pictures and a few updated stories/examples. It seems crazy how a book that is just two years old seems to be considered no longer usable.

*Update*: The previous edition (8th) is now selling for less than $5 bucks. You are better off with that one, plus you will want to keep it for your second A&P class, or at least as a reference to look back at later on. For most A&P students, you will cover the first chapter all the way to the nervous system. In A&P II you will probably start with the Endocrine System or chapter 15.

Your professor may require you to get Mastering A & P. This requires that you use a on-line website that allows you to take some tests, quizzes and other exams. Getting the older book, will save you money, so your be able to purchase the other software. The access code is $55, if you want the eText/eBook included, then it is $110 and that will include the 9th edition. The My Mastering A & P website, is good for 1 year. If you take AP1 in spring, your still be able to use your Mastering A & P information if you take AP2 in the fall, saving you a lot!

Finding this textbook for under $100 is difficult. If you only need the book then this is a great deal. If you need the complete package which includes the atlas, cd, and access code then this isn't it. The package is under ISBN: 0321719794.

Kindle version not up to par

The book itself is fine -- it's A&P and no textbook makes it simple and easy because it's not a simply and easy subject. I'm commenting on the Kindle version, hence the 2-star rating. I have viewed the book in both my Kindle Fire (original) and via the kindle app on my ipad.

The kindle version was $136 and there are several things that make it harder to use the Kindle version than the actual book. I would rather have spent an extra $50 and gotten the book.

1. No page numbers. This can be extremely difficult when you're in class and told to read pages 49-152 and answer questions on page 54.
2. No chapter numbers are shown to indicate what chapter you are reading. You can figure out out more or less as you're reading along and see chapter-related numbers in the text, but no chapter numbers appear at the top of the pages.
3. The graphics/pictures don't work well when enlarging them. If you look at the image as it is, it looks good, but when you double tap on a graph to read the smaller print, the print does not get crisp and clear -- it gets more blurry, and this makes reading large graphs and charts rather cumbersome. In some instances, the text is highlighted to indicate an image should be there and when you click on "figure 3.2" nothing happens and there is no figure later in the chapter to correlate with the supposed link.

While I saved in both weight and dollars, I wish I had gotten the actual book. Unfortunately, digital textbooks aren't up to speed yet and the publishers need to put some emphasis on production of e-books so that they are like the textbooks: page numbers, chapter numbers, images that work, links that work, etc.

My personal preference is those written by Xavier from the messages by Luiz rather than Emmanuel. There are meaningful and worthwhile messages in The Way, The Truth, and The Life by the very nature of the subject matter, but book seems more organized around Spiritism as a doctrine than others I've read by Xavier.

A truly inspiring book

I have taken classes from Gwen for over 25 years, yet the quilt on page 7 still blew me away. By the time I got to the last page I had dozens of inspirations for my next dozen quilts. Thank you Martingale for publishing this wonderful collection of the work by an amazing quilter and a wonderful person. Thank you Gwen for being such a great inspiration for me being true to my own style in quilting. I love drawing out what I want to do, love the challenge of figuring out how to do it, and the freedom to change my mind along the way is the best. The quality of this book is the highest and the photography is perfect. This quote from the book is what I aspire to: making quilts that are "unstudied, unpretentious, and more interesting, not to mention less stressful and more fun to make." The book is everything I thought it would be times five.

Expensive but very comprehensive

Technology Ventures is a book that I'll be keeping for a long time. It is a bit expensive (it's a text book, so this is not unexpected), but unlike many other books, you'll probably keep this one.

It covers the basics of launching a business, and it discusses legal issues, marketing, and HR in an engaging format.

Who should read this book:
If you have an academic background in technology, and want to launch a new business, this book will be perfect for you

Who should not read this book:
If you are looking for a quick, light read, this book will be too much for you. Also, if you're looking for information about social media marketing tactics, this book won't really help you

What I like about this book is that it really provides you with everything you need to know about launching a technology company. It covers everything, from the conception stage, to the legal issues. It is taught to Stanford students, and with good reason; its a very good book.

Buy this only if you have to

The title says it all - if it is a required book for your class then get it. I got this beginning of 2012 when I finishing my senior year in college. As an electrical engineering major, I referred to my textbooks a great deal. I actually kept most of my textbooks from undergrad (I may be a bit of a hoarder), but not this one. The reason was simple, I didn't find this book to be particularly useful. I took an entrepreneurship course that required this book. This book has very basic econ mixed in with real world examples. It will talk about strategies of a start-up business and then discuss how amazon/google/p&g/etc. do so well. Honestly it is like a blended in version of econ and wikipedia, so not so good.

I feel that most textbooks bought on this site are school related so you have to get it. But if there is a choice, I would go with a different book.

Layout is weird and text is hard to read

Well the layout is a little weird. Not like normal textbooks but it is broken up by main sections then by subsections and I honestly didn't read much more than the 3rd or 4th chapter because of the way it was written. The text is a light blue color which makes it somewhat hard to read for long periods of time. Starts to blend in with the white paper.

The content was dry and nothing I hadn't really learned in marketing or entrepreneurship classes.

EDIT: I guess the 4th edition had black ink. This review is for the 3rd addition.

Code of Practice for Programme Management in the Built Environment

This is the first Code of Practice for Programme Management for the Built Environment. It is a natural development from the highly successful Code of Practice for Project Management for Construction & Development, which was first published in 1992 and is currently in its Fifth Edition. Both Codes of Practice were developed by representatives from the major professional Institutions associated with the built environment including the CIOB, RICS, RIBA, ICE and APM, as well as from key government departments, domestic and international corporations and the university sector. By aligning, coordinating and managing a number of related projects as a programme, benefits which would not have been possible to realise had the projects been managed independently can be delivered. This Code of Practice is intended to provide practical coverage of the general processes and procedures to be followed when managing such a programme. It sets out the necessary requirements for effective and efficient programme management, while at the same time ensuring systematic quality control and documentation through governance arrangements. Written for programme and project management professionals in construction, whether working as contractors or clients, the book will also be of interest to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of construction and related disciplines.
