Truly Wise

I first encountered this deck at a local book shop in a sample display. I immedietaly fell in love with it. I went to the counter to buy it and they were out of stock. I then went on a search for this deck, going to all the book sellers and magical shops aroound, they were all out of stock, I was told numerous times that it was not a popular deck so they didnt carry it all the time. I then started calling stores 60 miles away looking for it, finally I found it and couldnt be happier.
This deck is simple, nourishing, wise, gentle, beautiful, peaceful, authentic, and filled with grace. Anyone on the wise woman path or path of gentle wisdom will find this deck valueable.

I've had my Medicine Woman tarot for several years, and each year, they prove to me over and over that they are one of the most readable and positive tarot decks around. This deck is more feminine than masculine, although there are male figures shown in some of the cards. The drawings are familiar and homey-feeling, the colors easy on the eyes, and the titles of the cards are also accompanied by the more traditional tarot names, so you can use them according to your own intuition, in the more traditional tarot way, or according to the Medicine Woman's Inner Guidebook that is the source book from the creator of these cards. The cards are multicultural and tribal in nature, but do not neccesarily depict Native Americans. It is a deck that has appeal for all cultures.

I loved these cards when I bought them years ago, and have never regretted it.

A must have for any serious student!

I have worked with the Tarot for years, having worked with many decks. I have never encountered a deck that spoke to me as strongly and lovingly as this one. The message of the cards is gentle, but firm. If you are at all drawn to this deck, and can approach the readings with an open heart, then this deck will help you change your life for the better (as well as those around you.) The gentle wisdom found in the cards and the guidebook is worth the time, energy and money spent. It is by far my favorite deck.

About the Author

Xiao-Hua Zhou, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington and Director and Research Career Scientist at the Biostatistics Unit of the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System. Dr. Zhou is Associate Editor of Statistics in Medicine and has published over 200 journal articles in his areas of research interest, which include statistical methods in diagnostic medicine, analysis of skewed data, causal inferences, and statistical methods for assessing predictive values of biomarkers.

Chuan Zhou, PhD, is Research Associate Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Pediatrics at University of Washington. He has coauthored numerous journal articles in his research areas of interest, which include clinical trials, health service research, diagnostics, missing data, and causal inference.

Danping Liu, PhD, is Investigator in the Division of Intramural Population Health Research at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He has authored numerous research articles in his research areas of interest, which include medical diagnostic testing and ROC curve, missing data methodologies, longitudinal data analysis, and non- and-semi-parametric inferences.

Xiaobo Ding, PhD,�is Assistant Professor in the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interests include dimension reduction, variable selection, missing data, confidence bands, and goodness of fit tests.

Great book on missing data; another e-book destroyed by Wiley. Buy the hardback, instead.

This is a terrific textbook, but it is yet another example of how and why Wiley should not try to sell e-books. To read any mathematical equation I need a magnifying glass. Alternatively, I must double-click on a displayed equation to view a blurry blown-up image, and then use the back arrow. This book appears not to have been produced with LaTex. Why can't Wiley quality check technical e-books before unleashing this crap on the public? Did no one open this e-book before it was sent out? I returned the e-book that I had purchased, but it's a shame: e-books do not get lost, and they are easy to carry and to search, if rendered properly. If lazy companies like Wiley would just quit turning great intellectual content into trash, other companies could do better. This book does a great job of summarizing all the major issues with missing data, which makes Wiley's incompetence even more inexcusable, to me. Of course, I bought the hard copy of this book and am quite happy, with the authors' work, but I remain very angry at Wiley.

Practical Guide to Appreciating Others

This book is a quick read that explains how different people like to receive appreciation in different ways. For you hard-nosed numbers-crunchers out there, the authors do a good job making a business case for showing appreciation at work. The book is a good balance between head and heart. You need to show appreciation only when you really mean it, but you also need to intentionally focus your behavior toward others in a way that will make them feel appreciated. [And the type of appreciation you like may be very different from what your coworker likes.]

The book comes with a link and password to a web-based survey to help you identify your own languages, so you can share with others what sort of appreciation is most meaningful to you. But the most valuable use for the survey will be in giving it to others, so you can find out how to most effectively show appreciate toward them.

I work in corporate training and development, and there is no shortage of assessments that people use for trying to understand others. Each of these has its own strengths, but most of them require a fairly intense amount of study and practice to be of practical value. The value in the 5 Languages approach is that it is intuitive, easy to remember, and easy to act upon.

Appreciation versus performance reviews

Really enjoyed the book. I came from a large retailer where our focus was on performance reviews and everyone turned it on at the mid-year point and at the end of the year. What was missing was appreciation and encouragement and that's where this book spoke to me. It's amazing what can happen to people when you offer them a little appreciation especially in their own language.
I'm familiar with the original book but didn't really see the connection to the corporate world until I read this book. There are some great examples and action items on what you can do for each language.
Our approach was to do the "blanket" approach and assume that everyone would "love" the gift or the annual luncheon. It was interesting - there were some people who would give away their gift or not show up for the lunch, and later you would hear them complain about these approaches. This book made me think - what would happen to our company if we learned to appreciate people in the language that speaks to them most.

Simple, Practical Ways to Show Appreciation

**I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review**

I am a big fan of Gary Chapman's The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts and was excited to see that he had transitioned the concepts of the five love languages into a business setting. I have found that my biggest complaint with most of the companies that I have worked with was that so few people expressed appreciation for their workers and volunteers. Despite being a hard worker, it is hard to really try your hardest when you feel that what you are doing isn't important or appreciated. This books does a great job giving examples of how to convey appreciation and how different people will feel appreciation from different actions.

The five languages of appreciation, mirroring that five love languages were Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Giving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. I thought it was good that the book strongly downplayed the role of physical touch in the workplace, but provided specific examples that would be ok (high five, hand shake, pat on the back) because while physical touch may be great for expressing love, you must be much more careful of that in the workplace.

Gary and Paul found that there is often a correlation between someone's primarily love language and their primary language of appreciation, but the two are not always the same. I was glad that their studies reached this conclusion, because I was originally worried that in reading this book I would be merely absorbing the same information I got from The Five Love Languages. The authors found that like your primary love language, your primary language of appreciation typically remains constant through an individuals life, but there are factors that will temporarily change it. They discussed how certain stages in life or how specific circumstances could temporarily change the primary means through which an individual feels appreciation.

OverallI I thought the book was great, a little appreciation is often very cheap, if not free to implement, and it can make a huge difference in job satisfaction and performance. I would recommend this book and I hope more people will show appreciation for their co-workers, subordinantes, and superiors. Lastly, I would recommend buying the book new to receive a code the the MBA Inventory (buying a code separately costs $20), which will help you determine your primary, secondary, and least important language of appreciation.
