I'm tired of being a sucker. I'm done.

It saddens me to say it, but this will be my last purchase of a Julia Quinn novel. Romancing Mr. Bridgerton and The Duke and I are two of my all-time favorite romance novels, but JQ stopped being an auto-buy for me long ago, when it became obvious that her effort (or maybe inspiration) had disappeared. I had high hopes for this one, since it's a prequel to the Bridgerton series. Maybe the old JQ magic was back, I thought. No. Sadly, not the case.

To be perfectly honest, I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of JQ's editors. They know this plot is paper-thin. They know the internal and external dialogue meanders along for waaaay too long. They know these characters are stock reiterations of previous JQ heroes and heroines. But somewhere along the way, they obviously decided to coast on the author's former glory. Because suckers like me will still pony up $7 in the misguided hope that these books will actually contain something resembling a plot, with conflict, sexual tension and unique, fully-developed characters. Nope. What we get instead is pages and pages (and pages) of asinine non-sequiturs and supposedly witty dialogue that does absolutely nothing to move the plot forward. There are at least three or four instances in this book when a character asks another, "What's wrong?" And the character responds, "Nothing." AND THEY MEAN IT. There is actually nothing wrong with them. It's filler. JQ has reached her word count.

I wouldn't even recommend this one to die-hard Bridgerton fans. It's a tepid carbon-copy of that series, so I'd just suggest re-reading the Bridgerton series and preserving your love for the JQ of old.

Tepid, without plot or purpose. Apparently two people fell in love and found themselves, I didn't notice. I bought this book because the library didn't have it and entirely regret the choice. Considering I had recently re-read "When He was Wicked" it really remphasized how downhill her plotting had gone. A book where nothing happens, but there's plot and growth and change in the characters. JQ can write, she just hasn't bothered to here.

This was a tiring read. I kept checking my list of books already read because it was like I'd already read it, but it wasn't on that list (yes, I read so many books I've had to make lists or I end up with multiple copies of a book because the blurb looks promising). On one hand, there's all the familiar (and now very tired/predictable) elements of the Bridgerton series - the family, the Pall Mall (again), the matchmaking parents, the now banal bantering between siblings and heroine, none of which seemed to keep the story moving, and none of which had much point to it at all.

It was predictable. (Probably why I kept thinking I'd read the story before).

I do hope this author rediscovers her mojo soon - preferably in an entirely new series with an entirely new/fresh cast of characters.

Nolan, a former air traffic controller, teaches aviation courses in the Aviation Technology Department at Purdue University and has taught a variety of aviation courses at the University of Illinois, Chanute Air Force Base and Purdue University. He holds licenses and certification as a commercial pilot, flight instructor, instrument instructor, tower operator, airframe and powerplant mechanic, and aviation weather observer. Mr. Nolan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Illinois State University and his Master of Science degree in Instructional Development and Educational Computing from Purdue University).

Fundamentals of Air Traffic Control

This books permits me, as a pilot, with a greater understanding of the other half of the team that makes the air traffic system safe and relatively efficient. Understanding the how and the why of ATC enables me to fly safer and with less hassle to the ATC controllers. Good introductory book.

With her stories mostly having mythological women as her subjects, Kavita Kane has done it again....taken one less significant character from the larger than life mythological stories and woven a delicate story bringing the character centre-stage.
Menaka, according to stories, was just one of the most beautiful 'Apsara' a pawn in Indra's scheme, sent from heaven to disturb Rishi Vishwamitra’s penance and prevent him from becoming more powerful than the devas in heaven.
But author Kavita Kane has given Menaka a personality. She becomes not just a beautiful sensuous nymphet meant as diversion or for physical gratification but also a woman with a ticking brain; she is aware of circumstances, she thinks and decides her own course of action. It is her story; of how she dares to take a path of love and loyalty, of how a game of deceit becomes her truth, of speaking her mind and standing up against wrong, of how her love is destroyed by the conniving Indra not once but twice, of her decision to sacrifice her happiness for the greater good of her children and her husband, of her desperation to reunite with estranged family, of her silently bearing the pain...
Since forever, men in Indian society have been given a status equal to God...infallible! Rishis like Vishwamitra leading a ascetic life have been revered and depicted as above all mortal insecurities. But the author has shown the human side of Vishwamitra. He finds much satisfaction and comfort in leading a householder till Menaka pushes him away so he could reach a higher goal.
The lucid description of Menaka's charm and beauty is very attractive and made me wish to see this lovely damsel in flesh. Kavita Kane has described the romantic and amorous episodes between the sage and celestial nymph with such artistic beauty that nowhere it seems either out of place or vulgar...it gives you goose pimples instead... it is almost delicious to read.
'All is well that ends well' and Menaka stands vindicated of her guilt of deviating the great sage from his path of attaining highest wisdom, her children have no ill feeling towards her, her sacrifice is recognised and held honourable by her husband, Vishwamitra and Indra learns a lesson of humility.
This book is as delightful to read as 'Sita's Sister' with easy syrupy language. Read it for that relaxed feeling and easy joy.

Must-read to understand power system dynamics!
The study of power system dynamics is challenging due to the existence of dynamics in different time-scale; for example, governor action in the scale of seconds, rotor flux phenomena in the scale of tenth of a second, stator flux phenomena in the scale of milliseconds. Mathematically speaking these are known as stiff systems. To avoid excessive simulation time or numerical instability due to the stiff nature of the model, in the power engineering community, it is customary to represent power systems by a set of differential-algebraic equations. The authors did an awesome job describing the theory to understand system dynamics and showing how to obtain a proper representation by using integral manifolds. I highly recommend this book to first year graduate degree students, engineers and scientists that have interest in the behavior of the power system.
